We are really overthinking this qualification thing. It's really simple. NJAC 13:45-2.4 sets the standard. There are three ways to qualify. I'll list them out of order... (1) take a course that's the same as the one police take at the academy - that's not available so we can't do this one. (3) Pass a test on the state's laws about use of force by an instructor of the police academy or NRA instructor. - there is no such course so we can't do this one. (2) Shoot a qualifier and submit your scores with a NRA or other instructor. This is the only one we can use since it's the only one that exists so we will do this one. And there is no specific required course of fire. So go shoot something that seems reasonable and submit your scores. It will be hard for the state to reject any course of fire since they have no idea what's acceptable and what isn't. Make yours look kind of like everyone else's and the permit approvers will just assume it's the correct one. If someone does complain, ask for the standard they are using to decide that - there isn't one. Living in NJ has made us so afraid of making a mistake that we've filled 20 pages of what-ifs on this topic.

I'm an NRA instructor and would like to qualify with several firearms that I own. I don't want to pay the fee to a range over and over again to qualify with everything. It's probably 6 or 7 different handguns. I'd like to find another NRA instructor and we can spend a morning or afternoon qualifying each other with whatever guns we own. We'll each bring our own guns and ammo. I'm ordering FBI Q targets right now that I'll bring. I'll also work up a qualification form that looks legit that we can use. I've got a suggested course of fire that one of the S.J ranges is using but I'm flexible on what we shoot. I intend to do this legitimately, not just sign off from our living rooms, but there's no reason to make this more complicated than it has to be. If you're an NRA instructor who likes long walks on the beach and lives anywhere near Quinton Sportsman's Club, reach out to me and we'll try to work out a date and time to get this done. I can guest you in at Quinton at no cost. FYI. My wife just had surgery, and I've got an order of ammo on it's way. So, the first I would probably be available would be the end of next week.

Guy, you promised earlier not to keep repeating your stuff in this thread. I get it. I appreciate if you can leave this thread for sharing experiences with current process and open a new thread where we all can discuss whats really wrong with NJ until cows come home.

I couldn't find one where I could walk in and get it done. Each place I went I heard some variation of "we no longer have a notary on staff" or "our notary is out today." So I used a mobile notary...

And just like extra requirements for FIDs and PtPs, those facing those requirements should challenge them through one of our 2A organizations.

according to the class i took, yes. no hp. critical defense though seems to have an exception mentioned on state pd website? i think that at least one of my local depts does in fact carry holllow points. seen them in one officers mag. 2....i'd like to know that one too. i'm sure that somehow, our ccw status will get linked to our DL, and they'll already know when they stop us. big question will be if we get targeted because we have ccw.

I applied at my NJSP barracks and the sgt told me it goes to Trenton at the FIU. it could be just because I applied at NJSP (Sussex). But others in town police depts are reporting they’ve gotten the same story and the fact that some others (some security guards, armored cars) had to apply to NJSP directly. So while I can’t confirm completely it seems highly plausible.

Isn't that the reason for three copies? Local PD, NJSP, and Superior Court?

You are correct. This is driven by the Restaurant/bar lobby. I have never seen a craft brewery with a kitchen. There is really no comparison. I agree they should not be allowed to prepare food but this tyrannical regulation of not allowing another small business operator (food truck) to set up so both benefit is short sighted and stupid. The first regulation proposed wouldn't let a brewer put out menus' of local restaurants. Explain the logic in that. At least they dropped that one. I'm surprised they let them put out board games and decks of cards. Cant let people go out and enjoy themselves, this is NJ after all. Regarding the cost of a liquor license check into how much it costs to set up a brewery. A liquor license will usually increase in value. not so much for brewery equipment.

Dunno what your game is, but I'll play: Yes, Hollow Point ammunition still illegal outside of certain exemptions, regardless if granted carry permit or not. No, unless you're a NJ LEO - NJ LEO's are exempted from hollow point restrictions. No it is not. You do not have a duty to inform a police officer you're carrying if you're stopped.

Now that we are past major hurdle (of justifiable need), lets talk about potential costs. Looking at the RPO process just as a guide line: 1. Yearly renewal application fees ($50 +) 2. Qualification/Certification twice a year ($250+?) 3. Fingerprinting fees with every renewal ($100?) So we are looking at around $500 (plus whatever the NJ is going to throw when the dust settles) every year for the privilege of exercising a Constitutional Right ? https://www.nj.gov/njsp/firearms/firearms-faqs.shtml

Ok, ok, its too early to celebrate. BUT, feel free to share picture of your NJ Carry Permit when you get it. Ofcourse, redact the important stuff. Lol. Alternatively, send a smoke signal for rest of us plebs who is waiting for this unicorn to show up.

This is some of the worst advice I have ever seen on this forum. Money and time spent on a high stakes life saving defensive skill with abilities that degrade quickly without regular sustainment training is never, ever a waste. It’s not enough to just meet the minimum. We should always strive to improve. Always be a student. Be good Stay safe Get training Be an asset, not a liability.

They are thinking, logically, applying common sense in regard to their own desired end. Make it as difficult, time consuming and expensive, if not impossible for the average person in NJ to possess a firearm in NJ for any reason. I would say, that's the part no one says out loud, But actually Gov Beaver does on a regular basis and is proud of it at that.

Constitution mentions nothing about "passing quals". Just because NJ has restrictive policies it doesn't mean that they're necessary or proper. While it wouldn't hurt, the average Joe who wants to carry doesn't 'need' police training.
