  1. I know communications regularly command you not to call your police department, but call the police department. This is anecdotal, but I know for myself, my wife, and two different friends (three different PDs), they called and magically they had their permits within a week. If this is true, imagine the scenario. People call, their application gets bumped to the top of the pile in the name of "customer service". Meanwhile the people who didn't call keep getting bumped to the bottom. It's a nasty cycle.
  2. I purchased the V Line Closet Vault II and I'm pretty happy with it. I'm just posting the Amazon link for reference - I don't recall where we bought ours from, but I do remember there being price competition online, including with or without free shipping. It will definitely fit one long gun and one pistol. Depending on how you configure it, you can do more. I designed and 3d printed "holsters" for our pistols so we can hang them on the door. I know there are other aftermarket options as well. Yesterday I added a battery operated motion light (it's in kind of a dark corner) (Edit: You mentioned low-profile, I didn't catch that at first. This extends from the wall a bit, however I think without that extrusion you might have trouble fitting much in the ~4" cavity once you factor in the door's hardware).
  3. Oh excellent. I was under the impression for state to state FFLs had to be involved on both sides. Makes sense now that I think of it, with auction sites etc. Thanks for the advice! Yeah, I'd let my FFL know in advance. Lately I think their greatest concern is that I have the pistol permit in hand and that I'm not expecting them to "hold it for me" until I get one.
  4. I feel certain this thread exists somewhere and the question has been answered already but I can't seem to come up with the magical combination of words to make search obey me. Apologies and thanks to those of you patient enough to answer the same questions over and over. I have the opportunity to purchase a sweet Dan Wesson 1911 at a reasonable price from a friend in PA. I have a valid permission slip from the state to purchase a pistol, and it has been more than 30 days since I last purchased one. In many cases I've found it's not worth jumping through hoops for a private sale transfer but for this particular firearm and the price, it's worth it to me to figure this out. I gather the PA seller will go to his LGS/FFL and the LGS/FFL will (something something) transfer it to my LGS/FFL where they will (something something) perform a NICS check and I will take possession of the pistol. Would any of you with more experience with this process be willing to outline the steps for me with more clarity? For example, does the PA FFL witness the cash transaction, do receipts need to be issued, etc.? As always, thanks!
  5. Since I don't have access to a drill press, I'll probably talk to a gunsmith. I see I might be able to replace the entire stock and find another way to pin it myself as well.
  6. You nailed it. Pinned up from the bottom. The lever moves freely, it doesn't seem that that mechanism was interfered with at all. It appears to be drilled into the tube and recessed in there enough I wouldn't know how to remove it.
  7. I don't get down that way very often, but I also enjoy going around and checking out gun shops and ranges in the area, I hadn't heard of that one - I'll give it a shot. Thanks so much for the advice and the recommendation.
  8. Thanks! I called it a fixed pistol brace because I didn't know what else to call it - it's not a stock the way I think of a rifle stock. I dug deep and found that it's a MAGPUL MOE Carbine Stock - so I should have just called it that - apologies for the confusion! I think I was worried I'd use the incorrect term (both for NJ or here) and over did it
  9. I recently purchased the state compliant Ruger PC Carbine (the black "tacticool" version with a pistol grip). It has fixed pistol brace (I believe this is done at the factory). The PCC is fine for me but both my wife and teenage son would benefit if I could shorten this firearm by five or six inches. The barrel on this guy is just over 16", but the overall length is closer to 36". The pistol brace is pinned back as far as it will go. Per the NRA-ILA "Civilians are prohibited from possessing...rifles with an overall length less than 26 inches or a barrel less than 16 inches in length". I understand that none of you can offer legal advice - I'm asking if you would you agree with my interpretation that shortening the length of the pistol brace or replacing it with a shorter one should be okay in NJ as long as it remains fixed and the overall length of the PCC is 26" or greater? If you do agree, a bonus thank you if you have any advice or experience with removing and re-pinning this stock and/or a recommendation for a stock that may be more more suitable. I haven't quite figured out how this one is fixed in the first place, if it's somehow welded I realize I might have to replace it all together (and pin that if it is adjustable).
  10. My wife and I applied on 3/30 but I screwed up my application (fat fingered my drivers license number) and had to re-apply. Mrs. Beeblebrox (3/30/2020): 1. Application type: Initial FID + (1)P2P 2. Police Department where you applied: East Greenwich Police Department 3. Name of the person you dealt with at the PD: 4. Time taken to issue FID and/or permit (from fingerprinting): 22 Days Me (Second Go Around: 6/20/2020): 1. Application type: Initial FID + (1)P2P 2. Police Department where you applied: East Greenwich Police Department 3. Name of the person you dealt with at the PD: 4. Time taken to issue FID and/or permit (from fingerprinting): 34 Days We spoke to individuals at the PD on a number of occasions and each conversation was cordial and professional.
  11. Thanks, I think I'll stop by today or tomorrow!
  12. Thanks all! To the locals - I've been planning on checking out SJSC. Is it safe to assume I can just drive over and check the place out at some point? I was a kid when I went to ranges so there were always grown-ups around to take care of that for me - I'm not exactly sure what the etiquette is about visiting ranges (no plans or expectations to shoot, just want to see the place and get a feel for it).
  13. Hello all, My wife and I celebrated our 21st anniversary along with our three boys. I grew up in PA (though next year I'll have been in NJ longer than I was in PA) and started shooting targets at a range with an ancient .22 bolt-action rifle as early as the age of 10. My interest in firearms is primarily shooting at a range, with a strong secondary benefit of home defense. I really love going hunting. The experience of being with people, being out in the woods, the social aspect, the hunting part... all the stuff around actually lugging a deer out of the woods after you shoot it. I just don't get a charge out of coming home with the trophy or the provisions. To each his own. I gave all of my rifles and shotguns to a friend when I moved to Jersey (imagine that, no government involved!) but always missed them. Every time I looked into getting a permit in NJ I was so overwhelmed and annoyed with the process that I gave up. New babies kept showing up in my house, reasons to not bother, etc. Then earlier this year it hit me - I don't want my boys growing up infatuated with or afraid of guns, I don't like being without home defense, and I really miss shooting and want to share it with my family. That and anytime I imagine the world going sideways, I'm left holding a baseball bat. Once the quarantine hit I had the time and my wife and I both took it to get our FID and a few pistol permits. She's all set, I'm still probably a week or two off (I screwed up the first application - protip: triple check your drivers license number when you fill out your app). I would say the East Greenwich Police Department is pretty solid. Given the delay caused by Identogo being closed for however long they seem to operate in a very orderly and timely manner. We ended up talking with the police department on a couple of occasions with good success, and the detective I spoke to about my application mishap was cool and spent time talking through my options with me - we have no complaints. I've been lurking here for months now - I don't recall how I found the site - perhaps via /r/NJGuns. I'm a sponge for data so I've been reading, watching videos, and absorbing everything I can. I'm also a phpbb forum old-timer - I've been using message boards like this for decade(s) now. Which means I speak when spoken to and only pop my head up if I can provide value. And I know where the search button is I created the account because I'm starting to come up against questions I can't find answers to using that handy button and may start posting a few. I'm pretty set on getting us Glocks, though I don't expect to find them. We're very practical people by nature and despite many friends recommendations that I can do better for less, etc, etc - I want a straight forward solution for us. Beyond Marvel vs. DC/Chevy vs. Ford style joking, I have run into few experts I trust suggest that a Glock is a bad decision. I'm also interested in looking into an AR/Other style rifle, which is where my questions start to creep in. That and we also need to find a range. Anyway - thanks for hosting the forum and taking time to read!
