This is highly dependent on the township. My last handgun permits were applied for at the end of August or early September and were ready for pickup in about a week. I applied for and received three. But, they included the 90 extension, so I have until February to use the third.
It will be used. -

Yes . . . If the gun was legally purchased, is otherwise legal in NJ and you are not otherwise legally barred from owning it, you don't need an FID and you don't need to register.
At least for now . . . I supposed that they CAN pass a law that would require you to register the guns. -
All of the online sources that I have dealt with have asked for a copy of my FID and DL before they will ship to NJ. They ask that these be updated once a year.
If you think about it, it's in their best interest to follow the laws of the states where they ship. If, for example, they shipped handgun ammo to just any NJ resident, NJ is MORE likely to simply ban the shipping of ammo to residents. More states follow suit for the same reason and the online dealers are out of business. -

At this point . . . Handgun only. Maybe rifle by spring or summer . . . Thanks!

I HAVE a revolver but it has some mechanical issues. I don't know anything about ICORE but you can PM me some info. IDPA is something that I've been looking at but I don't yet have a belt or holster . . . I'd be interested in talking about it anyway and maybe just showing up to watch.

OK . . . Nobody here has been talking about buying ANYTHING illegally . . .
There are ways that you can own a handgun, let's just forget the air gun part because it doesn't matter, in NJ without the paperwork.
There are . . . Sorry if you don't get it . . . Can we stop now? -

That was in my original post . . .

I've been around guns most of my life. I was licensed for sales through a dealer while in high school and college (remember when KMart used to sell guns in NJ?) My now ex-wife didn't want them around the house while we were raising our kids but now that we are divorced I am getting involved again. So, I would call myself an "experienced new shooter".
I am very interested in getting into competitive shooting. More to gain practical experience than to be better than anyone. Honestly, I have no interest in hunting and just going to the range and putting rounds through the chamber only does so much for me. I AM looking for experience and resources.
There is little that interests more than maintaining our Constitutional rights. All of them . . . Not just the second . . . Locally, I'm looking for a way to work on NJ laws: Concealed carry in NJ is an embarrassment as are the permitting and transportation processes as a whole. At the same time, I'm slow and careful about joining organizations (including these forums) because of wariness about those running them.
If there is anything that I can do for anyone, reach out . . . I am, among other things, a professional photographer and I would be happy to provide images for any group outings, club commetitions or anything of the sort. I can also do very high quality video but my editing skills aren't great.
I'm looking for to what everybody has to say . . .

Think, for a start, about any interaction with the police that involved a violent act on your part. Domestic disturbance etc. Then think about any convictions. The check is really to make sure that you haven't been convicted of any felonies (called "indictable offenses" in NJ) or domestic violence related charges. The same goes for the mental health questions. Have you ever been committed to a psychiatric hospital or ward? That kind of stuff.
In the end, fill the form out to the best of your ability. They will either issue the card, or not. If not, you aren't in any trouble unless you LIED ON THE FORM. Back around 2008 or so, it took me about five months to get my NJFID in Mount Laurel, NJ. They were notoriously slow at the time. Mine was slowed a little because I asked the father of a friend, a NJ State Trooper, if I could use him as a reference then he told the investigating officer that he didn't know me that well. They let me amend the application to use a different reference.
Yes . . . You could us a better image of your avatar. The pixelation makes Mr. van Winkle's grey hair look like a checked cloth head covering. I'm a chip off the ol' Nipper myself . . .
I wasn't a member of the NRA before purchasing any guns but I had my NJFID for over ten years before I used it. Don't worry about it.
It's not a complicated process or form. Just go to the site, print it out and research your answers if you are not sure. Don't worry about what you are going to buy. I believe, if you intend to buy a handgun, you can request that permit at the same time. For now, I suggest applying for two or three P2P permits. Once you start shopping, you are likely to see more than one thing that you really like.- 1

1 hour ago, DirtyDigz said:Yes . . . There are plenty of states where air rifles and pistols are not considered "firearms" . . . I guess that's because there is no "fire" involved . . . In those states, you can pick them up off the shelf at Walmart, put them in your cart and go through the checkout lane (I'm not even sure that you need to show a licence but I would assume that you do since there IS still a minimum purchase age.)
You can then move to NJ and you do not need an FID or completed pistol permit. Registration is even optional.
In fact, you can move to PA and get a driver's license, buy a .44 Mag or an AR (with a waiting period and background check) then move to NJ and you STILL don't need any paperwork as long as the guns meet NJ legal standards. -
That's an interesting assumption and an interesting pellet trap . . .
I don't have 30 feet inside the house . . . Unless I shoot from the living room, down the half flight of stairs and across the family room . . .
Outside this would work well since the yard is fenced . . . I'd have to check with the township police about what they would do if a neighbor notified them. -

So . . . I can list on GunBroker and sell anywhere that the ammo is legal?

After several PMs . . . I don't know what the hell Johnny is talking about.
He sent me a PM telling me where he was and asking what I have. I told him what and about how much and why I'm looking to get it out of the house. I never offered to sell him anything and I never mentioned a price. Then tells me how many rounds he has that he isn't trying to cheat me.
I'll find a way to make the entire discussion public if anybody wants.
I made two posts to this forum yesterday after finding it while researching NJ gun laws. I do have a few hundred rounds of .38 Spcl that I am no longer likely to ever shoot. I'm not looking to gouge anybody (not that it's anybody's business if I was).I was pretty happy to find this group but I don't have time for bullshit like this. Is this what I can expect from the forum?

Why not sell it here?
I only found this site when I was looking to answer this question.

Can I use an air pistol (.177 or .22) to shoot targets in my back yard?
I’m only on .25 acres in a suburban neighborhood. Just looking for some practice.

Hello! First post and I’m not sure it’s in the right place. Feel free to move this to another forum if it’s more appropriate.
I have an excess of done hand gun ammo. A caliber that I don’t shoot much anymore. we are talking BBC about 400-500 rounds.
Can I sell this on GunBroker.com? Do I have data collection and retention issues?
Any info would be health appreciated.
Thanks

I'll join the crowd welcoming and second the idea of getting your license issues resolved as soon as you can.
You will need matching IDs to buy a gun and any time that you buy ammo. I know that going to the DMV is a pain in the rear end but it might be easier than explaining why they don't match each time you purchase and carrying a third piece of documentation (the address update from DMV.)
