  1. A hotel is not a residence as in George Revell. Then why were the charges dismissed?
  2. guess you don't remember something called the Revolutinary War. Or Vietnam. Or the Soviets in Afghanistan. All professinal well eqipped armies vs the unorganized citizens. We won our freedom, we pulled out of Vietnam, the Soviets pulled out of Afghanistan. Don't underestimated the power of ordinary citizens Not entirely true. The Minutemen were local militia who got rudimentary training. Early in the Revolutionary War the Continental Army lost most of their battles to the British until Von Steuben came along and established training standards and methods. The Viet Cong were basically wiped out whem they all came out of the woodwork in Tet 68. Along with the North Vietnamese Army they were supposed to be able to get the population of South Vietnam to rise up against the US and ARVN troops. It didn't happen. After Tet 68 the VC were just about non existent. I know I was there. Virtually all major actions with the US were with NVA regulars. These guys were in for the duration unless they got seriously wounded or killed. Many of these NVA were fighting since the French in the 50s. There were a few who had started fighting the Japanese. Yet we still beat them with our draftee army. The NVA never won a major action against US Forces. If you don't want to believe me then read the excerpts from General Giap's memoirs about halfway down the green box here: http://www.snopes.com/quotes/giap.asp The Russians never controlled the countryside in Afghanistan. When we started supplyong the Muhadijin with Stinger missiles the Russians couldn't fly anywhere. It was only after the CIA got the Muhadijin organized and established alliances between groups that the Russians decided to leave. Can an unorganized mob defeat a modern army? Yes if they are willing to take the casualities. There were I think 19 Rangers and Delta soldiers killed in Somalia in the "Blackhawk Down" fight. Yes they made us retreat to our base there. But the US soldiers there killed about 1000 Somaliis (sp?). Professional soldiers are capable of damage far in excess of their numbers. If we can bag 15 geese, 2 bears, 8 deer, countless birds, coyotes, foxes, on their own turf, then surely we could bag us a few thousand assholes on our turf. Well yeah, but...geese, bears, etc aren't shooting back or they are sitting in a tank, aircraft, etc. They have artillery and air support. Can it be done? Yes but not without serious organization.
  3. It's not his home therefore he wouldn't be covered by an exemption. If it was a lease for a week and his name was on it, it would be a legal destination but as it stands, he's just visiting and therefore not legal which consequently breaks FOPA protection. There is nothing in FOPA that says it has to be your home. It says it has to be legal to possess where you leave from and where you are going. 2C39-6 says: e. Nothing in subsections b., c. and d. of N.J.S.2C:39-5 shall be construed to prevent a person keeping or carrying about his place of business, residence, premises or other land owned or possessed by him, any firearm, or from carrying the same, in the manner specified in subsection g. of this section, from any place of purchase to his residence or place of business, between his dwelling and his place of business, between one place of business or residence and another when moving, or between his dwelling or place of business and place where such firearms are repaired, for the purpose of repair. For the purposes of this section, a place of business shall be deemed to be a fixed location It uses words "residence, dwelling and premises" as different kinds of places. His parent's "residence" is his dwelling or premises during his stay here. No money or lease need change hands to make it your residence. If I have two houses and let my daughter live in one full time without paying rent or no lease doesn't she reside there? Isn't it her dwelling? People come from all over to NJ to shoot matches on Sunday. Many arrive Saturday, shoot the match, spend the night at a friend's house and leave on Monday. I can't see any violation here. Its not like you can carry it anyway. Depending on his route he may be able to open carry in some states on the way. Concealed carry if he's going through AZ. Many states allow you to carry in your car without a permit.
  4. How about Spirito's just down the block? They must have come back. Spirito's went downhill in the 70s AFAIC. Went there a few times in the 80s and it hadn't come back. I'll give them a shot sometime based on your assessment. Chris' Hot Dogs on Elizabeth Avenue by the cannon Actually its Jerry's Hot Dogs, I confused it with another place. I've been eating their chili dogs for over 50 years and they have the best hot dog chili ever created. It's been in the same family and they still use the same secret recipe. If you're thinking of smoking hot chili this ain't it. To savor the elegance you must have your dogs with chili, mustard and (raw)onions.
  5. How about state guard or naval militia? Not in NJ.
  6. Good movie, if I want to fall asleep!!!! Well judging from your picks: Night of the Living Dead (either version) Dawn of the Dead (either version) Day of the Dead Return of the Living Dead I Return of the Living Dead II There are no zombies in the movie. Watching Casablanca you have to be able to follow a plot, appreciate good acting, and understand the real life moral and courage messages the movie portrays.
  7. The solution is going to come from people exactly like you because you have the expertise to serve a need that others are willing to pay for. The people who know how to turn a profit and keep others employed are going to be the saving grace of this country John, it's people running small businesses that is going to pull the country out of the economic hole we are in. gunnyr is 100% on this. It hasn't been mentioned but another deal breaker for you is as a private you'd only be making about $1400 a month gross as a private. Not bad if you are out of high school and you have your rent, food, and medical paid for already. I had to pass up a slot in flight school when I was a staff sergeant. E6 was a lot less than I was making on my civilian job and my wife and kids would have had to eat cardboard for 10 months while I was off learning to fly.
  8. There is of course the best movie of all time Casablanca. The movie has something for everyone a love story, action, intrique, and probably the most quoted lines of any movie.
  9. I would detail all this in a letter to NJSP not a phone call. Some say thsi won't get you anywhere but it it won't make it any worse. I grew up in Elizabeth and saw it go downhill as I grew up. The only reason I find to go back there is Chris' Hot Dogs on Elizabeth Avenue by the cannon and lemon ice on 4th Avenue (although I haven't been there for awhile).
  10. so would I be able to do this and not miss work? I went on active duty in 1967, then to the Guard and Army Reserve retiring a year ago in December. Not missing work is the deal breaker for you. Ignoring any extended deployments there are plenty of normal absences from work. Basic is almost 10 weeks I believe and any mos producing school is going to be at least 8 more weeks. A drill weekend is a drill weekend and you must be there, sometimes from Friday night to Sunday afternoon. There's annual training which is 2 more weeks you'd be gone. There are also short term deployments also. One year I had 3 weeks in Europe, came back for two weeks and off to Germany for 3 more weeks. the military is rife with idiots, incompetents, and people I would more likely kick in the nuts than shake their hand. I could not say it any better gunnyr. I started as private, made staff sergeant, got commissioned after 15 years and retired as a lieutenant colonel so I dealt with them on all levels up to two star. It may be requirement that a certain percentage of each rank has to be an idiot or incompetent. I always worked for the government as a civilian. I worked for city, county, state, and federal government. the required percentage of incompetents is at least the same as the military, maybe higher. Join the fire dept! In most cases you'd be busier on the first aid squad.
  11. The Professional. Go for the international edition if they have it. Always have liked this movie. What's the difference with the international edition? "Taken" is my lastest favorite. This genre in not usually what Liam Neeson does but he does it well in Taken.

    Long term storage

Clean and lube as you normally would, wrap in an old t shirt, and put it away in a drawer or safe. Unless there is going to be some unusual exposure to humidity there are no special prep needed.
  13. Aim still has them for $69-89. When you add shipping and ffl fees those are all over $100.
  14. It was his father who was shot and not the dealer. Well I guess in your mind the police can just shoot anyone they want and say it was an accident. There is not enough in the article to make a judgement if the cop should be prosecuted. "Well I guess un your mind..." statement clearly exhibits your prejudices. Any and all cops who shoot someone by accident should go to jail like the rest of us would if we were in the same situation! Okay how many times have you served a warrant on a heroin dealer?
  15. Handguns to a different state must be transferred through an FFL. The easiest way to go about this would be to drive down to NC and visit a local dealer with your brother and transfer the guns at the dealer. The dealer will typically charge you a fee for this since they have to do a NICS check and fill out a form. This is leagl and the easiest and least expensive way to do it (bring the guns when you go visit him). The only issue would be how to get the handguns off the NJSP books. I'd call the Firearms Unit and ask them what they would want. At the very least get a receipt from the FFL in NC.
  16. Looks to me like they are pretty reckless the way they hold those pistols below head level and with little regard for where they are pointed.
  17. You might as well order the extractor pin and spring set at the same time.
  18. We should take the restraints off of the Hell's Angels and let them go after these gangs. Somehow I can't see contracting one gang to go after another gang as a viable option.
  19. the resale value of Taurus is not very good. That's really relative. My 4" 669 is in excellent condition and I don't think I'd have any problem selling it for $200. I only paid $85 for it when a Smith Model 19 would have cost me over $200 at the time. The Taurus warranty is transferable forever. If you bought a 20 year old S&W, you bought a 20 year old S&W. S&W's lifetime warranty is only for the original owner and that's only over the past 10-15 years. If you want a good quality revolver that has stood the test of time but want to save a little money then I would buy a Ruger. I was addressing the OP's question but I feel Ruger has them all beat. No idea what Ruger customer service is like with revolvers as I've never had one break. That's with 8 or 9 owned over the years. There are S&Ws I own and like but way too many people bad mouth Taurus with no personal experience, they all have had "friends" who had horrible experiences. Maybe so, but Taurus is an excellent value for the price you pay. Many custom revolver gunsmiths will not work with Taurus as a base model for a customer b/c they are more trouble then they are worth to get them to an acceptable level by their standards I can remember back in the 50s and 60s if you brought your Volkswagen to most shops they would refuse to work on a foreign car. I will agree you're better off getting a S&W if you feel you need all kinds of custom work. If a "working" revolver is what you're looking for a Taurus will fulfill your requirements. A gun you spend more money on doesn't mean you will shoot better or defend you better.
  20. I have two 669 Taurus revolvers the adj sight version of the 65, a blued 4" made in 1988 and a stainless 6" made in 1992. The 6" I bought used from a friend. It was his only handgun for several years and he said he at least 10,000 rds through it (mostly 38s) and he never had any problems with it. I put at least 5000 magnums (mostly 125 gr) and a lot more 38s (mostly +P or +P+)through the 4". The only problem I had was about 10 years ago when I was banging off magnums and the rear sight mounting screw came loose and the rear sight flew off into the grass. Taurus replaced it at no cost other than shipping with about a 2 week turnaround. Taurus triggers are not as smooth as a S&W or Ruger but nothing you can't work with. I like to compare my Taurus experience with a S&W Model 19 I bought in 74 or 75 that suffered severely from flamecutting and going out of time after not more than 2000 rds of magnums. Am I saying Taurus is better than S&W? No I'm saying my Taurus is better than that Smith I had. I also have a Taurus 85 since 1988 with no problems and lots of rounds out of it. Do I trust the Taurus? That's what I've been carrying lately so that should answer the question. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a Taurus that met one of my real or made up needs.
  21. 4-5 per pistol I use on a regular basis. 6 is better. 20 is insane. At the price of some magazines now you can buy another gun for the price of 10-15 magazines. Another gun is better than a lot of magazines for one.
  22. Switching to jacketed 38s will have the same effect though. its not due to switching calibers. Well yes...and no. Jacketed 38s can have the same effect but are less likely to damage the gun at 17-20000 psi. The 357 runs at 35,000 max pressure so it would be much more likely to damage the gun than 38s.
  23. I use a boresnake 3-4 times for a quick clean and to minimize any muzzle wear on a gun you can't clean from the breech like a M1. I suppose you could do a really good clean witha boresnake but you'd need a few of them to swap off as they got dirty.
  24. Now, if your 38 rounds excessivly lead the bore, than its a different problem, but thats not due to switching to 357 What I said was if you switch to 357s after shooting 38s that have excessively leaded the bore you will create an excess pressure situation. Contrary to what some believe the jacketed 357 round will not "clean out" the lead. It will try to compress the lead which basic physics doesn't allow. If enough pressure builds up it will split the barrel.
