  1. I started shooting hand guns in January. I did have 10+ years of hunting and shooting trap, but I decided to take the NJ Firearms Academy NRA Basic Pistol course in February and I came away with mixed reviews. I think it was great for the true newbie ( I was the only one in the class with any shooting experience), but for someone with some experience, the class fell a little short. My objective was to focus on the safety aspect of shooting and storing a firearm. I wanted to make sure I was handling the firearm safely at home, at the range and during cleaning. I heard of way too many accidental discharges when cleaning a firearm. I was also concerned on how to best store a firearm at home. There's a delicate balance between keeping the weapon safe and secure and having it at the ready just in case. The course didn't really focus on home safety. The NJFA course taught the basics; 3 hours of lectures, an hour shooting, an hour of cleaning and 30 minutes for the test and grading. The test was a joke. It was open book and we self graded. There were a few students who should have never passed. A little scary since they could be in the lane next to me at my next visit to the range. If you've never touched a firearm, then I would recommend NJFA. If you have some experience, look elsewhere. I heard the guy across the street from the Bullet Hole teaches a good basic class.
  2. That's a pretty strong statement. Can you elaborate on your experience? I purchased an HK from a dealer in Texas and the BA was great about the transfer. They even held it for a few weeks and let me shoot it until my permit was finalized.
  3. I've been a member of the Brick Armory for the last few months and I have yet to see a problem within the range . I can only recall one time there wasn't a RO and I was the only shooter. I've never seen anyone loading behind the line and I would definitely say something if I did.

    Mossberg JIC

is the Mossberg JIC (or any other pump action shotgun with a pistol grip) legal in NJ? I've read through the statues and the ambiguous NJ gun laws are as clear as mud. The JIC meets the requirements for barrel and overall length, round capacity and it's not a "semi-automatic" firearm. My concern is the NJ definition of a shot gun: "Shotgun" means any firearm designed to be fired from the shoulder and using the energy of the explosive in a fixed shotgun shell to fire through a smooth bore either a number of ball shots or a single projectile for each pull of the trigger, or any firearm designed to be fired from the shoulder which does not fire fixed ammunition." Since it's not fired from the shoulder, how does it get categorized?
  5. Great place to shoot. Nice selection of firearms and Glock rentals. Ammo prices are not inflated like at some other ranges. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable. They treat newbies and seasoned pros the same.
  6. I'm no expert, but from my recent experience, I would look for a 9mm that accepts a .22 Rimfire conversion kit. She can become proficient at the range shooting cheap .22 ammo and then switch overall to 9mm. Kits run about about $300, but you can recoup the cost in a few months or sooner depending on how often you shoot. I shoot about 400 rounds of 9mm a week. That's about $54 compared to $10 for .22 ammo.
  7. Greetings, I'm new to shooting handguns. I've been going to the range for the last few months and just purchased an H&K P30L. So far I've shoot 600 rounds through it and I've been impressed with it's accuracy. Looking forward to picking up some tips and finding new places to shoot. Bill
