  1. Yeah - what he said 8-) Chad - do you have any pix of the shotgun with the g2? I'm curious how you set it up... I don't currently own a shotgun, but always figured I'd go the surefire (yeah, I know - I'm like a broken record) forend route mostly because it seems like it would be the easiest to operate without having to worry about extra wires hanging off the gun. Do you like the G2 set up for a shotgun application so far?
  2. I've heard the same thing about the standard bulbs... that said, there's plenty of guys running the standard G2 on their ARs. Kyle Lamb, the author of "Green Eyes and Black Rifles" even recommends the G2 for AR systems [really good book btw for those interested in ARs]. The recoil of a shotgun may be too much for the standard bulb tho. My experience with the G2 has been as a hand held, so I can't say for certain one way or another.
  3. It's another forum. Originally, it was a place for fans/collectors of Emerson Knives to gather, but has since become a bit more diverse covering all sorts of knives, flashlights, gear, guns, preparedness, etc. It's kinda sorta private, in the sense that there is no guest access. I've been a member for years and I can't remember if there are any requirements for joining other than filling out the form. Shoot me a PM if you would like the URL. To get this back on topic those of you that are looking for a (and I hate to use this word) "tactical" hand held light but don't want to invest too much money, check out the Surefire G2 - the non-led models can be found for just under 40 bux and they're damned near indestructible because of the polymer they're made of. They can even be mounted to rifles if you buy an rail mount. The run time is limited to about 20 minutes, but most non-led models have this issue. They'll put out at least as much light as a 2 D-cell Mag but are 1/8th the size. It's a good introduction to the world of Surefire
  4. It's usually the fact that it's "made in china" Granted, there's some good stuff coming out of China these days - I think Fenix lights are from China (altho not positive). I'm just not ready to depend on them yet. And considering something like a TRL-1 can be had from like 80-90 bux... I dunno... I'd rather go that route for no other reason than it's the "safe bet" (if that makes sense). Don't get me wrong - I'm not saying Surefire, Streamlight, and Insight are the only ones worth having... they're not. It just happens to be what I have experience with and what I'm comfortable with.
  5. +1 - I never leave home without at least one light... In my case a surefire e1e with TID bezel in a kydex holster on my belt. I probably use that light more than any other single tool/knife/weapon I've ever owned. ETA: Good to see another USN (not to be mistaken for US Navy) member here
  6. First, let me start off by saying, that I'm pretty new to all of this, so take anything I say with a grain of salt These are just my opinions based on research I've done trying to address my own home defense needs. Let me also say that I'm slightly biased in that I own a number of surefire lights and have a very high regard for them. No - dont have this particular light, or anything similar to it I don't look at it as spending money just on the name really - to me it's more like I'm spending the money on quality. I have a limited amount of money I can spend on my "toys" and I'd rather spend it on known products, instead of doing the trial and error thing. Granted, at $30 am I really out that much money? No... but $30 here and $30 there trying out things, and I can afford that fancy new Surefire For me, it's the same as the knives I own - I stick to Emersons mostly with a few Kershaws, Striders, Benchmades and Spydercos mixed in. Yeah, I can spend 20 bux on some junk steal made in China knife and it'll cut fine for the most part. But when the SHTF, I'd rather have something with me that I KNOW won't fail me if I do my part correctly. Same reason I own a Glock and not a Bersa or something like that No - I wouldn't. As I mentioned in the earlier thread, I have TRL-1, and will more than likely invest in a Surefire X300 when I have a little extra cash I can part with. That said, if I had put a couple thousand rounds thru a firearm with a no-name light and didnt have any issues, I'd be more inclined to trust it. Seems like you're well on your way to gaining that trust from the light you found on eBay. Yes and Yes There's a good chance in a home defense situation it's gonna be dark... and last thing you wanna do is take a pot shot at where you THINK the BG is... so you NEED a light, in my opinion. Now, as far as being an easy target - it really depends on how you use the light. I'm not gonna get into how people should be using the light, cuz I'm not really qualified to discuss that - but there's plenty of info on that if you look around. But, basically, if your light is in the "constant on" position, you're doing it wrong This also bring up the issues of weapon mounted lights vs. hand held lights - pros and cons to both. But that's a topic for another day And I really need to get back to work, cuz this ended up being a bit longer than I intended.. good topic tho
  7. Saw a thread about njgf on arfcom
  8. Sounds nice to have the range to yourself! For the price, the hour drive to this place doesnt seem so bad. Just wish they had some pictures on the website so I could get an idea of the layout
  9. Any particular reason you want the Glock light? You're probably better off with a Surefire X200/300 or a Streamlight TLR-1. I have one of the newer TLR-1's with the C4 LED that I got for less than 100 bux, and it is ridiculously bright. It comes with adapters to fit various handguns and longuns.
  10. Yeah, I don't think Jim does email, either.. altho I cant say I ever asked. He's open till 7:30ish on Wed and Fri.
  11. +1 Jim is my go to guy for transfers. Never had any issues. He's about 25-30 minutes from the city
  12. Out of curiosity, which two places won't accept transfers for stuff they say they can get?
  13. I just wanted to write a quick note about the great class I just had with Anthony. First, a little about me: I'm one of those "gun guys" that knows a ton of stuff about firearms, but I have very little hands on experience. Previous to today, the last time I shot a gun was more than 5 years ago at a rental range in PA. Also with me was my fiance, who is not a "gun person" at all, but is nice enough to indulge me and my hobbies. So, onto the class - My fiance and I took a private First Steps pistol class with Anthony today. Anthony is very personable. He put us both at ease right away and took his time covering all the topics in the class. His facility is very nicely set up and is very conducive to learning. We covered safety rules, the pros and cons of various handguns (semi vs. revolver), how to load/unload our weapons, stance, grip, trigger control, sight alignment, and a bunch of other things I'm probably forgetting. We then went across the street to Bullet Hole to practice everything we had just learned. We lucked out and had the range mostly to ourselves. Anyway, this is turning into a novel, so let me sum it all up by saying we both had a really good time and learned a lot. I have some (in my opinion) glaring weaknesses I need to work on, but, if I keep up with the practice tips Anthony gave me I'm sure I will over come them. My fiance did really well and is anxious to try something with a little more "kick" (she shot a .22). If any of you new gun owners are on the fence about taking a class, get off the fence and give Anthony a call and bring your significant other! And you advanced guys will probably learn a few things too! Thanks Anthony!
  14. Ben, check out Jim at Action Shooter in Haledon. I posted his info in this thread: http://www.njgunforums.com/forums/ffl-fees-p5709.html#p5709 VERY reasonable transfer fees and him and Dave (the other guy that works there) are good guys. Just don't ask him about transferring AKs :? Only downside is that depending on where you're driving from, you may have to drive thru some sketchy parts of Paterson to get there He did 2 transfers last month for me, and aside for waiting almost 3 hours for a NICS check one time (which had nothing to do with him), it's been a painless experience
  15. LTDAmmo recently had AE and PMC for 12.50-13.50 per 50 and 1000rnds 115gr PMC for 230 - looks like they're out now, but they seem to get some relatively regularly. Don't let the disclaimer about not shipping to NJ scare you away... they do ship to NJ.
  16. Sounds interesting - does anyone buy any chance happen to know if a lot of people have signed up for this? BH is usually pretty crowded most of the time, and since this seems to be a free event, I would imagine that it's gonna be swamped...
  17. Prob shoulda done this before my first post Anyway, been lurking here for a couple days and decided to finally register. Not much to say really.. I'm fairly new to NJ and firearms - moved from the city to northern Essex county about 8-9 months ago. Got my FID back in mid Feb and have been slowly building up my new "collection". Guess that's it...

    FFL FEES

Don't think I've seen Jim mentioned in this thread, so: Action Shooters Supply 267 Haledon Ave Haledon, NJ 07508 973-942-6464 $20 for transfers plus NICS fee + tax = $37. I've done a couple transfers thru him recently - no issues. He won't touch any AK stuff tho.
