  3. This was also on News 12 NJ, They showed the garage and interviewed his nephew. Manchester police shoot, kill man, prosecutor says By KEITH RUSCITTI and CHELSEA MICHELS STAFF WRITERS The family of a man shot and killed by a police officer are disputing investigators' version of events that resulted in the death. On Sunday, Richard Nordstrom, 43, who lived at 3219 Wilbur Avenue was killed after Manchester police responded to a 911 call about a domestic violence dispute at the residence. Ironically, Andrew Nordstrom the nephew of Richard and the person who made the call to police, said authorities went over the line in handling the situation. "As far as I'm concerned it was murder,'' said Andrew, 22, who also lives at the home and who claims to have been standing about 15 feet away when the shots were fired. According to a press release from the Ocean County Prosecutor, at about 2 p.m. on Sunday local police responded and were directed by relatives to an unattached garage and workshop located to the rear of the property where Nordstrom had fled. Officers saw him in the storage area pouring gasoline on and around himself, and he was holding a lighter. Nordstrom was ordered by the officers to drop the lighter, to which he complied. However, according to police, he then brandished a firearm and pointed it at the officer who then fired at Nordstrom, striking him several times. The firearm was subsequently determined to be an imitation, according to the Prosecutors Office. Nordstrom was pronounced dead at the scene via telemetry by Dr. Gilman of Monmouth Medical Center at 2:24 p.m. "We don't keep gasoline in the shed,'' said Andrew in an interview on Monday night. "And if my uncle was pouring gas on him, like the police said, "where are the stains on the floor? Gasoline leaves stains"'','' he said pointing while pointing to the dry, concrete floor in the area where Richard Nordstrom was shot. Andrew Nordstrom said he called police because of a physical confrontation he had with Richard. He admitted his uncle was drunk at the time and was hoping police could calm him down. An opened bottle of vodka was still located on a table inside the shed on Monday evening. The Prosecutors Office also said Manchester police have responded to the residence on numerous occasions relating to domestic issues. Andrew said "it's been months'' since police were at the home regarding a domestic issue and that had to do with violating a restraining order involving his ex-wife. "They confiscated all of his guns the last time they were here,'' said Andrew. Edward Nordstrom, the father of the victim, was also a witness to the events. He said officers chased Richard into the shed where he apparently locked himself in. "I went to get the key,'' said Edward, 72. "But when I came out they broke through the window area of the door.'' Moments later, the gunshots were fired, according to the Nordstroms. "It was literally seconds after the cop went through the door that he fired the shots,'' said Andrew Nordstrom. "There were four shots. One missed.'' The Nordstroms run a fencing business. The detached garage and tool shed is where supplies are kept. Behind the structure are rolled up fences and supplies. Ocean County Prosecutor Marlene Lynch Ford announced on Monday that her major crime detectives are conducting the investigation into the incident. "As is protocol in all police involved shootings that occur within our jurisdiction, the Prosecutor's Major Crime Unit headed by Captain Thomas Hayes will conduct the investigation and report their findings to the Ocean County Prosecutor as well as the NJ Division of Criminal Justice,'' the Prosecutors Office said in a statement. Authorities haven't identified the officer involved in the shooting. Investigators were at the residence until nearly midnight on Sunday, according to the family.
  4. Albert (Tiny) Manzo was executed mob-style in August 1983, after he and Gambino family soldier Peter A. Campisi were suspected of skimming from a mob casino on Staten Island. "A couple of weeks later, they found Tiny Manzo in the trunk of his car," recalled Robert Buccino, a New Jersey organized crime expert. The 350-pound mobster took four slugs to his torso. His naked body - the arms and legs bound in plastic - was discovered in the trunk of his parked Lincoln-Continental outside a supermarket in Hillside, N.J. The killing was never solved. Campisi, a made man and Tiny's partner in the casino, suffered a similar fate, Buccino recalled. The colorful Manzo, who ran for mayor of Paterson in 1974, also owned the Brownstone Restaurant - one of the main backdrops for action in "Housewives."

  12. Massive oil plumes under US Gulf Scientists have found vast underwater plumes of oil, one 10 miles (16km) long and a mile wide, in the Gulf of Mexico, following last month's rig disaster. A Georgia University expert warned oxygen levels had fallen 30% in some areas of the sea, and it could take decades to repair the damage. BP is still trying to insert a tube into the gushing well to siphon the crude to a ship on the surface. The US government has demanded BP make clear its commitment to pay damages. Researchers from the National Institute for Undersea Science and Technology say they have detected several sprawling oil slicks lurking just beneath the surface of the sea and at depths of 4,000ft (1,200m). Dead zones The find suggests the scale of the potential environmental disaster is much worse than previously feared since the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig blew up on 20 April, killing 11 workers.

  15. Video to be released of a suspect later today............and one more Pennsylvania connection New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said a white male in his 40s was seen near the SUV that was parked on a Times Square street and packed with explosives. The man was seen leaving the area and shedding a dark shirt, revealing a red shirt underneath, about a half block from where surveillance cameras saw the vehicle entering Times Square in New York City at about 6:28 pm Saturday. The video of the possible suspect is expected to be released later today. Kelly said the individual was looking around in a furtive manner, but also stressed that the behavior could be totally innocent. The Connecticut license plate on the car does not match the vehicle, and investigators have spoken to the individual to whom the plates are registered, according to Kelly. That license plate ultimately was traced to a Connecticut junkyard, At about 2 p.m. Sunday, NYPD breached a 55 by 32 inch gun locker inside the car and found it contained eight bags of an unknown, fertilizer-like substance and an inverted pot with a "bird's nest" of wires. There were three propane tanks next to the gun locker, two five-gallon jerry cans of gasoline, and a timing device, police officials said. There was no high-grade explosive, and the timing device was clocks attached to wires. Attached to the propane tanks were M88 fireworks, some of which went off. At a Sunday afternoon press conference, Kelly said police would be reviewing hundreds of hours of videotape, and that police had identified the owner of the green Nissan Pathfinder but had not yet spoken to the owner. Detectives are in Pennsylvania today meeting with tourists who think they may have captured a suspect on video. Kelly said "no evidence" supports the Pakistani Taliban's claim of responsibilty for the bombing, but had not yet ruled out either domestic or international motives for the attempted attack
  16. This is from Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/May_1,_201 ... bomb_scare On May 1, 2010, a failed car bombing in Times Square, New York City was discovered by a New York City Police Department (NYPD) officer, who was alerted to the threat by a nearby street vendor. The device failed to ignite and was successfully disarmed with no casualties. The suspect vehicle entered Times Square at approximately 6:28 pm Eastern Daylight Time (10:30pm UTC) on the evening of Saturday, May 1, 2010. Two minutes later a T-shirt vendor, identified as Lance Orton, noticed suspicious activity coming from a Nissan Pathfinder, including smoke drifting from the vehicle. He alerted a nearby NYPD police officer. The officer then approached the Pathfinder to investigate, and observed smoke coming from vents near the back seat, unidentified canisters, and the smell of gunpowder. The officer immediately called for backup, a bomb disposal team, and the New York City Fire Department. An area stretching from 43rd Street to 49th Street on Seventh Avenue, and 45th Street from Seventh Avenue to Eighth Avenue, was quickly evacuated of all vehicle and foot traffic, and barricaded. Several buildings near the vehicle, including the New York Marriott Marquis hotel that the Pathfinder was parked in front of, were also evacuated. Civilians moved away included some of those attending Broadway performances. Upon arrival, the bomb disposal team utilized a remote-controlled robotic device to break out a window of the vehicle and explore its contents. They found gunpowder, consumer-grade fireworks, two five-gallon cans of gasoline, three propane tanks, electrical wiring, and two clocks with batteries that apparently were fashioned as one or two detonators. A bomb disposal expert with information on the contents found indicated that the design of the device was more consistent with that of an incendiary device than that of a traditional bomb. A first generation 4-door Nissan Pathfinder was used in the attempted bombing. For reasons not yet known, the device's ignition source failed to set it off as intended, possibly due to the suspect being interrupted by the police officers. Kevin Barry, a former supervisor in the New York Police Department bomb squad, reported that the improvised explosive device had malfunctioned and "failed to function the main charge. [edit]Reaction and investigation New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and NYPD Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly were in Washington, D.C., to attend the 2010 White House Correspondents' Dinner, but returned immediately to New York after they were informed of the incident. United States Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano made a statement that the attempted bombing has been regarded as "a potential terrorist attack".Law enforcement officials planned to review security camera footage from the area for additional information. The Pathfinder was determined to be stolen, and had invalid license plates that did not match its registration. The registered owner of the plates was contacted, and according to law enforcement sources does not appear to be involved in the incident. United States President Barack Obama was briefed on the incident and later directed John O. Brennan, his homeland security and counterterrorism adviser, to offer federal assistance to New York City officials. The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Joint Terrorism Task Force also provided assistance to the NYPD. Responsibility According to a report by the Associated Press, a Pakistan-based Taliban group allegedly claimed responsibility for the attack in a video posted on YouTube. However, the website states that "the claim could not be immediately confirmed. Police are looking for a white male in his forties who was seen on surveillance footage.
