if the pellet gun was purchased legally in another state while the owner resided there, no FID is needed. but it's a good idea to get if you're gonna live in NJ and buy more guns - which you will if you frequent this forum. Welcome, Michael! the permit/FID process differs from town to town. Mine were all ready in 4 weeks. There's a thread somewhere (can't find it now) where people put in the specifics about their town. You're doing well by watching YouTube videos to start. I think Shore Shot is relatively close to you and you can rent guns there to try out, or like Ken said, show up to one of the NJGF range meets and people will gladly let you fondle/try their guns. and lastly, I used to work in Robbinsville (McMaster-Carr) - nice area.

I wondered about this also, as I live a walking distance from my range. I figure if it's unloaded, cased and the case is locked, ammo in a separate bag _ I can walk or hop on my bike and go to the range. I might actually do this when it gets warmer... with the price of gas what it is... y'know...
