  1. The press thinks it's wrong to own guns, so they're not going to help us any. If we could get them to do a story about the permit process, it would be better to do a story about how wasteful and redundant it is for these towns to need to do this archaic process in the first place. If NJ wants to insist on permits for HG purchases, it could be done at the time of sale by an FFL and save our police resources for something that is actually needed, like fighting crime.
  2. Bedminster provides self addressed stamped envelopes for reference letters........ My new town renewed my permits no questions asked while I waited .........I never had that happen before. Was glad I didn't need to go back to pick them up.
  3. Chiesa was on NJTV shortly after he became AG and was praising NJ "tough" gun laws. He may not have been actively looking to eff us like Dow, but a gun nut's friend he was not.
  4. IIRC - The 150' from any building rule (frequently visited or not) only applies to bow hunting and not target shooting (and the same for the 450' for gun hunting rule). Bottom line, if the town does not have a discharge ordinance, you can target shoot regardless of the distance to your neighbors as long as you are shooting in a safe direction.
  5. That would be up to a judge to decide.......and most prosecutors seem reluctant to bring that charge since it's not a slam dunk, and if they lose they will set a precedent that doing so is legal.
  6. Most likely they will find out about it. I know a guy who got charged in the military, by the military, with underage drinking, his punishment amounted to a week of litter patrol. When he applied for his FPID, his town's PD found out about it and asked him about it. He still got his FPID no problem.
  7. The point I was making is that, what Sarco was doing was not illegal until AG Farber "reinterpreted" the same existing law and said it was now illegal. I don't believe (although I did not read the entire transcript) that the judge ever ruled whether or not the mags were legal or not, but the state argued that they were indeed illegal and that Sarco failed to adhere to AC rules that stated it was not legal to block the mags that way.
  8. The older FID cards had a spot for your SS#, as well as the language about being able to "carry long guns" , the newer FPID cards do not either of these.
  9. IIRC - two issues, barrel needs to be rifled to be a pistol, and a gun with a rifled barrel larger than .50 cal is a destructive device, excluding muzzleloaders and antiques.
  10. #6. I didn't see a single gun store. I think business can't afford to specialize in one thing up there. That's why the gas station sold wine and JB Weld. I think the hardware stores double as gun shops or people just purchase guns from each other. I've been to a few gun shops in Vermont and went to a gun show in Burlington, I wasn't very impressed. Talking to the locals, everyone owns guns up there, but like the OP, I've never seen anyone carrying any -outside of a guy or two hunting in the woods. I did also notice the general stores usually had some ammo. As others have mentioned, the people are very friendly but also very laid back, if you're a NJ go getter, you might find this distressing. And the work situation there is dismal, as bad as NJ is for overregulation, at least you can make good money here - which is why I haven't left - yet. Would love to move to NH if I could figure out a way to make good money from there.........
  11. If this is what you're basing your decision on, keep in mind that NICS fees are paid to Champion Communications, not the state directly. Fees paid to obtain governmental documents and records Fees and charges paid to New Jersey governmental agencies or federal governmental agencies to obtain documents, records, or information of any kind which are required to be maintained as part of the agency’s regulatory function are not subject to sales tax.
  12. The first time I went there was in the early 80's and thought it was one of the best sporting goods shops I had ever been to.............Went back about 6 or 7 years ago and they had expanded the place considerably. I was impressed with the gun room upstairs, I recall getting some American Eagle .357 mag ammo on sale for $12 a box (oh, those were the days) and enjoyed perusing the used gun racks, that were out on the floor (ahh, what it's like in free America). And anyone who likes to ice fish........more gear for that than you'll ever see anywhere else (we are talking Maine after all).
  13. Your link is not working........ I do know that background check services (like an employer paying to check the background of a new hire) and other investigative services ARE taxable.
  14. Who knows at this point...........back when the AWB first went into effect and up until AG Farber changed the state's "interpretation" of what a blocked mag was, putting a piece of wood in a mag to temporarily block a mag was totally legal. I know Sarco back in the day used to sell "high cap" mags that were blocked only with a piece of wood. When they stopped doing it this way is hard to tell.
  15. Are you sure a NICS check is not taxable? From what I recall........ I know when the NICS system first went online, none of the dealers were collecting tax on the NICS fee, and then there was some sort of edict from the state that dealers needed to collect tax on the NICS check because it was a service being provided by and paid to a third party company (at that time it was MCI). I don't see any difference now in the fact that you are still paying a third party company to provide this service. Maybe a long time dealer can fill us in on what went down. I would call the Division of Taxation to confirm what you have been told, since you, the business owner, are ultimately responsible to pay for the sales tax if you're wrong. FYI - if you're including the NICS in the price of the gun, and not breaking it out on the invoice as a separate item, you're in effect collecting tax on the NICS checks anyway. Just asking.........maybe you know something I don't.
  16. Did Ray's even rent guns? I don't remember them offering it.
  17. I've seen groundhogs claw though a cider block wall and push Quarry Process out from under a garage floor, so I would double check that something hasn't made a new hole somewhere. That gravel looks to me like it was under your floor and was somehow pushed out.
  18. If you have an application pending, ask them if you can add more permits to your pending application. Any town that isn't run by a bunch of douches will let you add more if they haven't yet gotten your paperwork back from the NJSP.
  19. Most of this pipe that I've encountered was used for drainage - connecting gutter leaders and storm drains and what not together.
  20. Anyone living in a town where the CLEO won't sign an extension, or is insisting on proof of a back ordered HG should contact the mayor and ask them why the CLEO is wasting tax payer dollars by not renewing these permits. The town only gets the $2 per permit to process your application (NJSP gets the $18), hardly anywhere near the cost to process the applications. By not renewing the permits the only thing the CLEO is accomplishing is getting town residents to apply more frequently, which ends up costing the town more money - unnecessarily.
  21. I've dug up and thrown away a lot of this stuff over the years, never had an issue getting rid of it. As other have said, this was in common use before PVC was around, 1960's and earlier.
  22. The Lyman book is considered by many to be the best reloading manual because they don't make bullets or powder and will give you a fairer evaluation than the books put out by bullet and powder makers. There is also a good deal of general reloading information in the book to learn about it. You should also read the posts in the reloading section of this forum, there are many knowledgeable people here who can teach you a lot of things. You may need to get recipes from the internet or old reloading books for some of the more obscure calibers, but be careful with these, try to independently verify them if you can. The best thing is to find someone who can show you the ropes to get you started. Reloading seems a bit scary when you have no experience with it, but is not really that hard once you get some rounds loaded and get a feel for it.
  23. Are any of these actually taking any members? I haven't heard of them being open to new members who weren't related to current members.
  24. Make sure the parkland you want to hunt is open to hunting, some state park parcels are open for hunting and others are not. Most of the state parkland I have seen that is open to hunting didn't have gates to limit access.
  25. Ethanol is terrible stuff, the worst thing they've done to fuel so far. It eats rubber and other seals in your carburetor and fuel lines. I use Sea Foam in all my 2 cycle engines (and I have many that get used daily), I have had a lot less problems since doing so and it's going to be much cheaper than $32 a gallon. Unless the equipment manufacturers had made a change in their recommendations recently, I don't think using premium is a good idea. It burns hotter, and in an air cooled engine extra heat is a bad thing. I've always run regular in all my air cooled equipment.
