  1. Got my card around January 15th. Two months just for a change of address!!
  2. 1. Application type (FID/permit w/ existing FID). FID change of address 2. Police Department where you applied. Wood Ridge, Bergen County 3. Name of the person you dealt with at the PD. Sgt. Wolfsuhn 4. Time taken to issue FID and/or permit. Applied 10/22/12 - Fingerprinting scheduled for 10/31/12 4pm (earliest available) - will update the rest when completed. *Update: Due to Hurricane Sandy my fingerprinting has been re-scheduled for 11/7/12. 5. Documents required by the PD (aside from the standard application and the mental health release form). Just application and Mental Health, but I am required to get fingerprinted again which surprised me, as I had that done 2 years ago for East Rutherford (2 towns over) and the official instructions from the PD didn't actually mention fingerprinting for change of address 6. Notes - anything pertaining to the application process (unforeseen difficulties, chief of police calling your home, you hiring an attorney, etc). Sgt. Wolfsuhn was very accommodating regarding leaving me forms to pick up and scheduling an appt to give the completed forms back to him.
  3. Gave me a fair deal on a 30-30 Marlin 336. Was easy to work with and generally all around smooth transaction. Thanks!
  4. Hey guys, I'm about to move to Wood-Ridge (just bought a house!!!) and I could have sworn someone posted how long it took them to get FID in Wood-Ridge but I just scoured each page of this topic and can't find it. Anyone have any experience with Wood-Ridge in Bergen County? Thanks!
  5. First time dealing with Chuck - great guy, easy to work with, fast at responding to emails, texts, and phone. Thanks for a good deal!
  6. I went to Cherry Ridge for the first time yesterday with a buddy of mine (I was his guest). I was a little lost when I first got there, not knowing the specifics of each part of the range, but once I realised all our options I was psyched. I like the idea of separate ranges without limited slots (a la Fort Dix). We shot pistol and 50/100 yd rifle, for about 3.5 hours total. I found all the ROs to be civil and polite, and thoroughly enjoyed my time there. We were approached by an RO for not having chamber flags in our pistols as we were finishing up our last round. He was super nice and reasonable about it, reinforcing the rules (to a newb) but not even an ounce of attitude. My buddy was asked to share the port with me as I was the guest, thereby making him responsible for my shooting. Obviously we would have preferred separate ports but it was a completely reasonable request and we were happy to comply. Fact is, if I want my own port and the full benefits of the range, I should pay membership fees just like everyone else. Overall I was very happy with the experience and once I have the money for a membership, I intend to apply. (My Fort Dix annual membership recently expired and I was getting tired of the ROs down there. It's cheap but it's hard to stomach driving two hours to be treated like dirt.)
  7. I have read that these fit a little too close to the pump release on a Mossberg 500 - did you have any problems with that? edited to clarify: I have read many significant positive reviews about this high quality product and did not mean to cast any doubts on its functionality. I caught one mixed review for the 500 (the model shotgun I would be putting it on) so just wanted to double check. Glad to hear it's not an issue and I guess the review I read was a one-off!
  8. http://www.buckeyefirearms.org/node/7866 I particularly like the part where he states, "In a certain (fairly high) percentage of shootings, people stop their aggressive actions after being hit with one round regardless of caliber or shot placement. These people are likely NOT physically incapacitated by the bullet. They just don't want to be shot anymore and give up! Call it a psychological stop if you will" (Ellifritz, 2011). I also like his argument that carrying what you're most comfortable with is a better strategy that worrying about caliber all the time, as this is my personal opinion also.
  9. Offered a reasonable deal on 1911 grips and a Mossberg barrel. Excellent communication throughout the process. Would gladly work with again!
  10. i'd be curious to hear how this works out, if you decide to do it. i love my Mosin but good lord it's long and heavy - even just 6 inches off the barrel would at least make it fit in my bag better.
  11. 1. Application type: 2 pistol permits 2. Police Department where you applied: East Rutherford 3. Name of the person you dealt with at the PD: Officer Abboud 4. Time taken to issue FID and/or permit: Filed 12/8/11 - will update when received. 5. Documents required by the PD: Standard permit form + $2 per pistol permit. Also, mental health form + $18 payable to State Police SBI. 6. Notes: I had no idea I was going to be asked for an additional $18 for another mental health check, considering I did my full application for FID only 14 months ago. Is that standard when requesting additional pistol permits?
  12. Howdy! Just bought my first shotgun. Mossberg 500 combo with 18.5" and 28" barrels. I'm pricing out stocks, shell carriers and the like, will post pics when I have something solid to show.
  13. I came on the site today to just make sure pistol grip shotguns aren't illegal in NJ...got side-tracked, ended up in this thread...which answers my question anyway!

I went to the Walmart in NY State and had no trouble, partially because the guy working in the sporting area recognized me from my job, and I've always been helpful to him. I straight up asked him if I needed my NJ FID and he just said driver's license is required, which he ended up not even looking at - and even if he did, the under 21 rule doesn't apply to me, being 29. It was $10 for a box of 50 Federal 9mm, not bad.
  15. I think I'm going to go ahead and have the full firearm shipped directly to the NJ FFL to have the mods done here. I'm not in PA that often and don't know of a specific shop in PA, whereas I *do* know one in NJ that will probably do it for me. I definitely won't be carrying it into NJ in its current configuration. Thanks to everyone for the input! My buddy owes me money and the AR-15 was his offer to clear the debt - I was worried I'd have to trade it in PA for something I *could* have legally transferred to NJ (big pain in the a**) but it sounds like I can work around it. Thanks!
  16. OK so a non-FFL/private resident in PA may ship/transfer the gun to a NJ FFL, so they can make it NJ legal and perform the NICS before I take it home. Do I have that correct?
  17. My friend has an AR-15 in PA that he wants to trade me. Problem is, it has a flash suppressor on it - can I just remove it? Or would I have to change the barrel so it's a non-threaded barrel? Assuming that doing either of the above would make it NJ-legal (that's the only problem I've found in my research), does it need to be shipped to a NJ FFL or is that just for handguns? Would I even need to transfer it if it's a long gun or just bring it over here? My apologies if these are dumb newbie questions and/or have been covered previously (I did look through the AR forums pretty thoroughly), I appreciate any answers out there!
  18. Not only that, a lot of people *in general* are just jerks. But in retail, especially, you approach someone that works with a product day-in & day-out, knows it in & out, sure - they might get frustrated by a newbie question. That said, it's the same with any "club" - when I bought my first Harley, I admittedly knew NOTHING about bikes. So, despite my being respectful and asking questions to learn more about them (we all have to start somewhere, right?) I got a lot of attitude from seasoned riders. Same goes for guns, if you walk in somewhere with little to no research/information, it can be frustrating to a seasoned enthusiast. I'm not saying it's right, but I think it's pretty much a common occurrence in ANY field, not just guns. Keep an open mind and don't let the occasional bonehead put you off. If you visit enough places (and do enough research on your own, or ask friends) eventually you'll get the hang of things and learn more, and hopefully find a good person to ask along the way. Anyway, my main reason for joining this site was to ask newbie questions, and so far everyone has been great!
  19. The one in Paterson is membership also. $25 a year, which doesn't seem bad to me, but it's pretty small and they only allow pistols & 22LR. It's the closest one to me so I'm a member and the owners are fine, but I am definitely looking for something nicer in the area...
  20. 1. Application type: FID & 2 pistol permits 2. Police Department where you applied. East Rutherford 3. Name of the person you dealt with at the PD. Records Clerk, I believe it was Officer Gentiles 4. Time taken to issue FID and/or permit. Got my paperwork Oct 8th, signed up for fingerprints same day, earliest was 2 weeks later, Oct 22nd. Received FID & Permits 11/17/10 so overall that's just under 4 weeks. 6 weeks if you count the pre-fingerprinting (I don't count that, considering it's part of the ID required) 5. Documents required by the PD (aside from the standard application and the mental health release form). Standard. 6. Notes - anything pertaining to the application process (unforeseen difficulties, chief of police calling your home, you hiring an attorney, etc.). The Police department was professional and courteous throughout the entire process, not that I expected any different, but sometimes a 29 year old fella like myself, covered in tattoos and with a mohawk gets flak for no reason. I was pleasantly surprised that this was NOT one of those occasions. I also picked two references that I KNEW would get the forms back in a reasonable amount of time.

I have my eye on a 500 round deal I saw on cheaperthandirt.com for less than $200 - does ammo have to be shipped to an FFL dealer or can it go straight to my home?
