  1. I was going to say something like this, but I don't think I could have said it as well. Thank you.
  2. Holy crap, it was scary just watching that! My impression was that his quick thinking allowed him to shoot the water to frighten the bear without harming her; but perhaps the pressure he was under cause him to miss low and left, as I surely would have done.
  3. She's going to be really popular with foot fetishists!
  4. This seems to be quite a confusing subject. As we have discussed, LEO's often don't get it right; and even among our group, which is far more knowledgeable about these things than most, our answers on this thread are all over the board. A common misconception seems to be that if firearms are transported in an SUV or similar vehicle with a storage area not separate from the passenger compartment, that the firearms must be stored in locked boxes. In fact, as Bonesinium notes, they need to be "... carried unloaded and contained in a closed and fastened case, gunbox, securely tied package, OR locked in the trunk of the automobile in which it is being transported..." I suppose that having the gun in a locked case would help in the event that one encountered an overzealous LEO. On the other hand, the standard the we need to meet should be what is required by law, not what is likely to satisfy the least knowledgeable LEO.
  5. My 15-22 must have heard me complaining about its accuracy, because it totally outshot my 10/22 a few days ago. I'll generally put a couple of 12" targets at either 50 or 100 yards, then take 30-40 shots with each and compare the results. As I noted in my earlier post, most of the time the 10/22 is better, but last week the 15-22 kicked its butt, so go figure.
  6. Interesting response, because that's been my impression of what could happen. I've consider obtaining a .22 conversion kit, as I understand that one could practice a lot more with cheaper ammo; but I've wondered if that practice translates to better shooting with larger calibers, as there is no need to manage recoil with them, which would seem to be a big factor in accurate shooting with the major calibers.
  7. Where do you guys do plinking? The only places we can shoot here in north Jersey are at ranges, so I'm a bit envious. I may have to give serious thought to getting a weekend place in the Poconos.
  8. If the question is "What have I changed my mind about as it pertains to gun ownership?" my answer is this: I bought a handgun a little over a year ago because I thought it might be useful for home defense. I thought I would shoot it a little in the beginning, then practice with it every once and awhile, and that would be it. What I have come to realize is that the likelihood of needing it for HD is minute, but that the fun is in taking it out to the range and practicing with it. So much so, that I've added a couple of more HG's (soon to add a fourth), a couple of .22 rifles, and a shotgun, the last now being my primary HD weapon. If the question is "What does accuracy mean to you?" as seems to be the subject of this thread, my answer is: My goal is a reasonable self defense accuracy, or about an 8" circle near COM with my HG's. I've been working hard to quickly acquire my target, and to develop sufficient trigger control to place my shots in that area. So far I'm still pretty bad at it, but through relentless effort, I seem to be improving. With my .22 rifles (10-22 and 15/22), I'm content to be able to put marks on a 12" target at 50 and 100 yards using just iron sights. I'll never win any competitions like that, but in a SHTF scenario, I'll have a decent chance to keep the zombies at bay. BTW, I frequently see guys at the range with their rifles in a lead sled or similarly braced, using a high powered scope, and shooting tight groups. Unless they are comparing ammo, I fail to see the challenge or skill in that. Am I missing something?
  9. Good lesson in this for you. Don't rely on LEO's for accurate advice on gun laws. And yes, the mag capacity limit is 15 in NJ.
  10. I wish it were that easy. Another call to S&W yielded the same result: impossible to get the Pro model shipped to NJ, due soley to the larger mags. They said the best I could do was to buy one of the other models and modify it. So now I'm pretty hot on the M&P, my P2P expires in five days, and they don't seem to be available anywhere in north Jersey. Looks like I'm going to have to file for an extension and keep looking around.
  11. Good article! Thanks for posting it. I've taken a few classes with GFH, and FATS training is definitely on my list.
  12. Just say you use it for opening boxes and cutting twine.
  13. That model #178010 does indeed look nice, with its slightly longer barrel, smooth trigger, and better sights. Sadly, I have been informed, both by S&W and by a local dealer, that we cannot own it in NJ because it comes with a 17 round mag. I believe that factoring in NJ compliance gets me down to just one model in 9mm full-sized, so at least the decision becomes easier.
  14. All right, I can make my next HG purchase in a week or so. I've got it narrowed down to the S&W M&P, and I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with it in 9mm. Also, I'm leaning toward the full-sized vs. the compact, since there's no hope of carrying with it in the foreseeable future. But even at that, it looks like there are about a dozen variations. Any thoughts about deciding among them? 7-3-2, which one to do you have, and do you still love it?
  15. That advice from Warrior Talk is probably dead-on, but I'm sure it would be hard to go totally brutal, stabbing people in the eye and such, even if one's life were threatened. Furthermore, in the aftermath of such a confrontation, I would sure hate to be in a jail cell with the buddies of the guys I mutilated. Kind of interesting how this thread has ranged from lightbulbs to how to launch a brutal defense to mob violence.
  16. Wow, totally with you on the first four sentences, including having the 23 first, then adding the 19. However, it may just be that I'm sentimental, but I have no plans to get rid of the 23. I must be getting used to shooting it, because it doesn't seem as uncomfortable anymore. Plus, I think it might have a slight edge in HD effectiveness.
  17. Looks like you have the carbine, same as I do. Note that it comes in three different configurations: http://www.ruger.com/products/1022Carbine/models.html Take a look at the wooden stock. It may be more of what you're looking for, although I'm pretty sure it's the same length as yours.
  18. Jon, I'm with you on that. If we ever attain the Holy Grail of being allowed to carry in NJ, I would view my firearm as a tool to help defend myself, not as a means to be judge and jury.
  19. Strong words, particular from a moderator! I'm not sure that I love the analogy myself, but people getting killed were not central to the civil rights movement. We already had laws in place against lynchings and other murders. The whole CRM was about assuring that a large group of people would receive equal protection under the law. It's not really equivalent to 2A issues, but there are some similarities IMHO.
  20. Which model do you have? I have the carbine, which has a wooden stock that gives it a nice, classic look. Perhaps you could switch out your stock for one of those?
  21. Thanks for the input. I made the drive on Friday evening, and it took almost three hours, so I probably would have either been late to arrive and/or exhausted if I had done it the next morning. Kept the HG in the room with me overnight. The place was a bit sketchy, so it would have been a good idea to keep it ready, but I can't say what I did, since I have no way of knowing who might be reading this. Also, it seemed like it would have been unreasonable to skip dinner, then breakfast and lunch the next day because I had the HG with me. Again, reluctant to say how I handled it, other than it's a shame that NJ laws might cause law-abiding citizens like us to potentially face criminal charges for what would seem to be reasonable actions.
  22. Ever read Catch 22? Because it sounds a lot like that. BTW, if I had my shotgun with me (which I usually don't), and found myself in a legitimately life-threatening situation, like being confronted by a hostile, rioting mob, I might take a chance and use it. Just sayin'. Oh, and BTW, what's the deal about collapsible stocks? What is it about them that makes them an "evil feature"?
