  1. I posted a comment a while back. Something about how the failed leadership of the Star Ledger Editorial Board doesn't just cost them their own jobs, but the jobs of folks who have worked at the company for years. Nj.com responded by not just deleting my comment, but all my comments, and my account.
  2. Unfortunately I have to report I do not have direct email address. I used the online form. My text focused on cost, pulling police off regular duty to conduct background checks, redundancy with NICS, and targeting of legal gun owners as if they are the source of gun violence. After that my text got so big I decided not to discuss other bills.
  3. To everyone: Have you contacted the Governor's office to register your opposition to S2723 / A4182, and asking for his veto? If you have: thank you. If you have not: don't let another day go by without your voice being heard. Don't be the silent majority: Let him know exactly where you stand.
  4. It is in pending legislation section. njgunforums.com/forum/index.php/topic/54686-s2723-revises-firearm-purchaser-id-and-handgun-purchase-permits-sweeney-norcross-weinberg/
  5. I don't see the actual amendments, just the June 17 statement from Assembly Budget committee. Language regarding mental health screeners 'ascertain' firearm ownership was changed to 'ask'. Language requiring court to order search and seizure became court discretion. Would be nice if they published actual amendments.
  6. Actually no. Read sections 15 and 16 (b). As the buyer, you are required to "exhibit such card." Out-of-state sellers may not be issued the device under section 12 to decode the embedded information. Also folks to sell ammunitiion my not be a "dealer" of firearms, an assumption not addressed by the bill. They may sell it to you because they don't know better. But you may be prosecuted because prosecutor can prove you received ammunition without first "first exhibit such card." Holding and possessing is only 1 requisite element, not the whole of requisite elements defined as legal transaction. Hunters have a way out because they go get a hunter's license, which is not embedded. That allows them to buy rifle and shotgun ammunition. Folks who want handgun ammo have to renew every 4 years, even if they just inherited the handgun, and keeps it at home. Weinberg did not give-up on her bill to ban online ammo sales. She still wants to criminalize legal gun owners, just by devious ways. 15. b. (1) No person shall sell... or.. receive... unless the purchaser... is the holder of ... a valid New Jersey hunting license, or a valid New Jersey firearms purchaser identifier card embedded... first exhibits such card.. to the seller.. 16 b. No person shall sell... or... receive... unless the purchaser.. is the holder of.. a valid New Jersey firearms purchaser identifier card embedded.. affirming that the person is qualified.. to .. receive a handgun... first exhibits such card..
  7. I echo the sentiment. Though not surprised, I nonetheless felt disgusted and compelled to turn off the live stream.
  8. The kids are probably there for A4225, which gives undocumented kids in-state tuition rates.
  9. Anybody attending the Budget meeting? 10am meeting, and as of 11:20 the live media shows pending.
  10. I just emailed them. Everyone should email, fax or call as well. Their strongest motivation is toe the party line. But hopefully they can find other grounds to oppose the bill, such as its ineffectiveness and costs.
  11. I am not a musket shooter so I don't know. But I am surprised no one is grabbing a musket. Not great against zombies, but in a post-nuclear age, finding musket ball mold, charcoal, sulfur and salt peter may be easier than finding rimfire and 223s. I grab 22 and 223 as well, but I don't expect to survive too long.
  12. Also the bill mandates many programs. Fiscal estimate says significant costs in upfront and maintenance. That can be translated to millions per program, per year. But the bill doesn't fund these programs. That comes later in appropriations. So all the Democrats have to do is to pass the bill, but don't fund it. No embedded DL or separate ID. But what will remain are the unfunded mandates. Renewal every 4 years, because that is the law. The township still has to accept your renewal applications, but detective salaries aren't paid by state taxes but by property taxes, so increased costs for 350,000 more annual background checks aren't Sweeney's problem: that probkem goes to your mayor and police chief. It is a political win with no costs.
  13. The bill does specify that certain details of the bill, such that 4 year renewal will follow 2C:58-3. This is the 3 to 6 month process. The bill does specify an escape clause in 12c. But that escape clause applies to section 12 only, the system that dealers will use to read embedded ids. And that escape clause kicks in the after 25 month of development and 36 months of testing. Meanwhile under section 3 every FID from 25th month is an embedded in DL. And under section 10 embedded IDs could be even sooner. So for 3 or 4 years they are issuing these embedded IDs with no way to read them. And if the escape clause in 12 is taken after 36 months of testing, that just means the old FIDs and P2Ps are still in effect. But the rest of the bill like renew every 4 years still happens. Since there is no embedded P2P, so you are still applying for every pistol permit. So instead of being in Place B, we are all in Place C. No honey, all poison. I try to avoid hyperbole and exaggerations by citing specific language in specific bill sections.
  14. I apologize. I will try to stick more to verifiable arguments and less... that other thing.
  15. I will concede place B may not really be that bad for some people Scenario A embedded DL gets picked You walk in to get you driver's license renewed. They say hold on, your DL has a firearm endorsement and pist permit, so you need to reapply for your FID. That may be a 3 to 6 months where you get the 5 personal references notarized, employer notification, and some township detective with stacks of backlog investigates your renewal. Meanwhile your DL expires end of month. So what do you do? Get a DL with no FID endorsement and no pistol permit? With no pistol permit, you can no longer buy handgun ammo for those handguns you own. Scenario B separate photo FID gets picked. Every 3 years you walk into the township PD and get a renewal application. They mail your employer. You name 5 friends who are asked to attest that you are a good guy, and they have to get it notarized. Why every 3 years and not 4? Because they are handling so many requests, the wait could be 3 to 6 months, maybe more. If you don't get your new ID before the old one expires, you can't even buy ammo. Meanwhile you notice less cops on the streets, more crime, and your property taxes are going up. Why? Because the cops are in the office processing 350,000 forms per year, on top of regular volume. They don't have time for criminals: they are too busy processing your paperwork.
  16. I will buy that. There is certainly much misconceptions to correct, which OP has addressed in various replies. But to original assertion , "I actually see S2723 as an improvement to the status quo here in NJ. " I will concede some people's lives will get better, and he may be one of them. But he asked for reasons why that perspective may not be widely shared, and far from accusing and that other thing, I answered a request for information.
  17. Maybe I don't mind the 50 cal ban, because I don't shoot 50s. Maybe I don't mind the 10 round mag limit, because I don't have any. Maybe I don't mind the training requirement, because I already have a certificate. Maybe I don't mind if they ban all semiautomatics, because I mostly shoot bolts. I recall a discussion between Scott Bach and a committee member. I forget which committee, though I believe it may have been the Senate Budget and Appropriations. He described the bill as a few drops of honey in a jar of poison. I, for one, am not ready to gulp that koolaid.
  18. Maybe you buy a handgun every year. I don't have that kind of cash. So maybe you like reapplying every 4 years instead of every 1 year. I don't. Maybe you buy cheap ammo for expensive prices at brick and mortar. I don't have that kind of cash, and local stores don't stock the competition ammo I use, so I buy online. Maybe you don't mind everyone else's life gets much worse, if your specific case gets little better.
  19. I am enjoying the irony. A decade ago, Beijing was a biker's paradise. Not because it was healthy, but because people couldn't afford cars. Today, cars are still prohibitively expensive, but a rising middle and upper class has taken over the roads. Try to rent a bike in Beijing, and people look at you like you are crazy, not just because competing with cars is dangerous, but the air is terrible. Mind you I like the idea of biking in Manhattan: Only time I want to be driving in Manhattan is when I'm driving THROUGH it to get to Long Island or Connecticut. But 30-45mins seems silly. It should be 2-3 hours. I would like a bike/pedestrian only bridge or tunnel connecting NJ and NY. Though I'm not sure if I'd bike over or use a Segway.
  20. Same. I appreciate that the committee meetings are fairly pre-scripted, and testimonial statements have little impact. I like that Scott has maintained a respectful and helpful attitude in a frustrating environment. At the end of 5 months of discussions, when S2723 reflects 90% of what Ceasefire wanted and 10% of what 1 million gun owners wanted, and 0% of what taxpayers or inner city communities wanted, I especially liked yesterday's message: "On behalf of those 1 million citizens... My message to you today is simple: LEAVE US ALONE!!! We are not responsible for acts of criminal and madmen, and we refuse to be scapegoats. We are tired of being treated like criminals."
