    Walther PPQ

GOOD to know! Thanks for the info. How about Brick Armory, any discounts over there? Are the two places similar or is one bigger / better then the other? P.S. How would "Shore Shot" know that I am a member of NJGF?
  2. Maybe in my case it was because I already had an F.I.D. Card (was only doing an address change and applying for pistol purchase permits) that they didnt ask for my birth certificate or passport. I had them with me though just in case. They took a photocopy of my old FID Card and drivers license only.
  3. Anyone try or have feedback about Fiocchi's new "Canned Heat" Ammo? Looks like a good way to package and store their ammo but I wonder how well it performs.

Agreed and a very good personal policy to get into all the time.

If I were a more experienced shooter, I would agree with you however for me I'll be happy just to handle the PPQ for ergonomics at the sales counter. With all the stellar reviews, I don't see it not being a contender for possibly my first semi-auto purchase (unless it's hard to find and the M&P is available first.)

Unless theres a piece of similar colored grit or dirt clogging that hole and then somebody could make a deadly mistake. The only type I would tend to "trust" are like the ones found on the Springfield XDm models which have a visual as well as tactile indication (shown below) but I myself still intend to just get into the habit of looking directly into the chamber by partially pulling the slide. I do think the XDm version is trust-worthy though.
  7. Which is why I came here to pose the question, right? What better place then this forum to learn the law, not just the written letter of it but opinions from others who know the ropes better then I at this point. By the way, I had a strong suspicion when I posed the question in the first place that having a simple couple of thousand rounds would indeed be nothing and that (unless there was a law limiting it) many gun owners would probably have way more then that. I learned alot from this post and the many answers to both questions. By the way, buying in "bulk" to me means buying .40 Cal in 1000 round cases because it seems that is the biggest lot in which it is sold and the lowest price break, regardless of how many cases you order.
  8. Speaking of "good prices" are they available locally or is my best deal via internet order somewhere? For range ammo I'll probably buy 1000 rounds at a time (case quantity.) sorry to go off topic a bit

I'm actually torn between the Walther PPQ and the S&W MP Professional model so I honestly think I'm going to just get both. Since the PPQ has a 4.20" barrel length, maybe I'll get the longer 5" version of the M&P. I wish that S&W would also do a PRO version of the compact M&P model too. Who knows, maybe Walther will also do a compact version of the PPQ also. The PPQ sounds too good to pass up as everyone who reviews it loves it. As I mentioned earlier in this thread, I am against chamber indicators (or using them rather) as I prefer to get into the habit of a "pull the slide back and look see for yourself" visual indication instead. I'd rather get into that habit for all semi-autos I handle or own.
  10. I sort of figured that. But I wanted to see if there was a legal limitation. Hey I plan to "stock up" when it's on sale too for a rainy range day. Did you guys see the new "canned heat" ammo that Fiocchi is producing? Sealed in metal containers suitable for being submerged etc. Might be good for storing in the damp basement etc.
  11. I guess you'd have to have a good relationship with your neighbors (especially so in a more crowded urban setting) because all you would need is one to say you were either waving the gun around or god forbid, pointing it at them and that changes things dramatically against you.
  12. How much Ammo can you legally keep at home in NJ? Not that I plan to horde ammo, but I can envision possibly having 1000-2000 rounds at times if I buy in bulk. So where do you cross the line legally in our State? Secondly, I've also wondered if it is legal to carry or holster a handgun on your own property. Is that legal in NJ? Say hypothetically I am sitting outside my home at a picnic bench, cleaning my pistol and a law enforcement officer rides past my home and sees me. What are the ramifications? Can I have a weapon in a holster around the home? Indoors? Outdoors? Not that I ever envision doing this although I am on several acres in a rural type of area. These are both questions that I am curious about.
  13. I too was prepared with unstamped pre-addressed envelopes for my two references and I had stamps with me just in case but the envelopes were not requested by the desk sergent who helped me. For I.D. he asked for my drivers license and since I already had an existing F.I.D., he asked for that too. He made copies of both. (I was also prepared and had my birth certificate as well as passport with me although neiter were requested.) He said it should be about 6-8 weeks for turn around.
  14. Visited my local State Police Troop today to drop off all my paperwork. Also spent about 15-20 minutes before that searching the web for form "SBI-212A" which I learned cannot be downloaded via the web as it is yellow and must be completed in person at time of application. 1. STS033 (normal) 2. SP66 (normal - mental health) 3. SBI212A (yellow form, background check) What I learned (which may help someone else in a similar situation) that they will only accept an $18 money order to accompany and pay for the SBI-212A form, no personal checks. (They will accept personal checks for the pistol purchase permits though.) If you are covered by State Police and not local police, be sure to search out your proper Troop that covers your area as the application gets assigned to a local Trooper first to do an initial investigation. Also, because my neighbor is a State Police Detective, I mentioned his name so that might help speed up the initial investrigation some. (Worthwhile doing if you know a police officer or trooper.) Now the wait begins.... (Address change and pistol permits)
  15. That's it. I have both sets of grips but missing all else (extra sights etc.) and I can honestly say that it has less then 100 rounds through it, all .44 specials (Range wadcutters) - not magnums. It was only range fired once or twice briefly as I spent more time firing my other revolver which was more manageable. So this 629-DX is in GREAT condition with hardly any wear whatsoever. I don't want this thread to become a "for sale" ad so lets leave it at that. I will join the forum as a supporter and list the revolver there by next weekend most likely. I had an idea of what I wanted for it and am not in a hurry to part with it. Anyway, thanks to all for the welcome and I look forward to being a Member here. Ken
  16. Well it's a starting point!! I have to find the wooden grips it came with as I have the factory Hogues on it now and will post it up when I get a chance. Glad to hear I can sell it right away without needing to wait for my updated FID card. Oh and by the way, this was a specially sighted DX model which at that time meant it was deemed to be excellent accuracy right out of the factory. (It's either a 6" or 6-1/2" full lug barrel all stainless revolver.)
  17. Thanks Harry, I wouldn't mind selling it privately but just want to be sure it is done legally. That is the unknown part for me. Is it just a simple matter of seeing the buyers permit to purchase and completing that form upon receiving payment? Doesn't the FED need to get involved prior to purchase? Also, any idea of where I can get an estimated valuation for the revolver? it's honestly like new as I never used it except for a few brief trips to a range. Oh and I do intend to support this website with paid membership and would have done that anyway.
  18. Hi All, Stumbled across this website doing some simple web searches. I'm a mid-50s casual shooter / gun owner who is overdue to refresh my skills at the range and have made a conscious decision to "get back into it." I need to update my FID card first as the post office changed my mailing address years ago and my FID was never updated to match my drivers license, which of course has been updated for years now. I own a couple of shotguns (mostly for novelty and home protection) as well as a couple of S&W revolvers, one being a stainless steel version of the S&W 629 - DX with full lug 6" barrel in .44 magnum. (hand cannon!) which I intend to sell perhaps at consignment by one of the ranges locally. I intend to buy several semi-auto pistols for general target practice and home defense. I've got my eyes on a Walther PPQ and S&W M&P Pro model both in .40 S&W. Oh and I'm a "leftly" so I am seeking good ambidexterous guns such as these two referenced are. I had original intent to get a Glock first and had strong interest in the GEN 4 models until research revealed that aside from the spring recalls they also seem to have trigger related problems too with overly heavy and scritchy trigger pulls due to redesigned trigger components used in all now. Too bad, I really wanted at least one Glock. Maybe Glock will get that sorted out in the future though and I have heard rumors of an official trigger recall coming. While I don't really consider myself an activist for anything, (just dont have the time) I am a strong believer in our 2nd Ammendment and hate the erosion we all have experienced living here in the State of New Jersey. I was born in NJ and will likely die here in NJ and I do support our right to own and bear arms. Enough rambling, Ken Millstone Township, NJ
  19. How long are the "permits to purchase" valid for? The reason I ask, I believe they are only valid for 90 days so if you can only buy one per month, then the most permits you can get at a time would be three, or even just two unless you go buy your first handgun the same day the permits are issued. Am I right or am I not seeing this clearly? I myself would like to apply for three permits at once. Or do I have to wait the full 90 days before I could apply for more purchase permits?

Thanks Wombat. I've also heard that on new PPQs, when you pull the slide partially back to do a visible chamber check, that upon release the slide "sometimes" does not fully move forward all the way and could require a slight push from the back with your thumb. Suppoosedly this goes away with "break in" and this is just more of what I've heard about the PPQ. Anyone ever experience this? I like doing a visible chamber check versus relying on any indicator. Then the habit becomes universal for any pistol you handle versus different habits for different guns.
  22. Thanks Bob, however it is my understanding that the pistol purchase permits expire in 90 days, and with the one a month limit I guess the most permits I could request is three. Am I interpreting this correctly? How long do you think I might be forced to wait? Yes, where I live (western Monmouth County) we are served by the State Police and I believe it is from the Hamilton Barracks.
  23. I need to do a change of address for my FID card and I also want to get a few pistol purchase permits too. Questions: 1. What is the turn around time for pistol purchase permits via the State Police lately? (I think I need to go to Hamilton Barracks) 2. Even though I can only buy one a month, can I apply for more then one purchase permit at a time? (I'd like to get three) - since they are valid for 90 days, that would / should allow one per month. I didnt move, the postal service changed the name of the town I live in based upon mail delivery only. But now my FID does not match my drivers license which already has the new town listed on it.

I've read in a few reviews that Smith & Wesson here in the USA actually add the "sights" to the PPQ upon import and that owners have been disappointed with slight damage or dings to the rear sight area of the slide. Anyone notice this or can comment on it? I've been researching this pistol as I think i want one in .40 cal S&W
