One, no, two weird facts about buying a new primary home in Florida: Property taxes are billed in November for the previous year in arrears. So in Nov 2014 I will get a bill for 2014 property tax due in April 2015. Since we are the first occupants our property was still taxed as raw land as of 1/1/2014. So our tax bill for 2014 will only be about $500 (we had to refund about $50 to the builder on the HUD-1). Sometime between now and early 2015 we will homestead the property. At that point we get a 50,000 break on the assessed value of the property. Also there is the "3% Cap" Properties are reassessed every year by the tax collector. So during the boom of the late 80's/ early 90's a lot of residents got hurt by property speculation raising their taxes. So Florida passed the Save Our Homes law of Jan 1995. It limits the annual increase in the assessment of the property to 3% or the increase in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) whichever is less, if you own your property subject to the homestead exemption. So they manage to pass a lot of the tax burden onto non-resident property owners. Sales tax is 6%, most supermarket food is exempt, most prepared food is taxed, clothes are taxed.

I made the big move last month (Naples SWFL) My best buddy in NJ and I Ioaded the guns and the dogs in the car for the 18 hour run. It's not the same without him right next door, but I hope to have some quality time when he visits. His mouth just hung open when I took him to Bass Pro Shop at the Alico Rd/RSW airport exit on I-75. I have to find a few more quality attractions for him and other visitors. So far FL meets or exceeds all expectations. Prepared my wife for the worst about the summer weather and winter traffic. Traffic from the snowbirds isn't as bad as I expected. Noon traffic on Pine Ridge Rd or really any county road in Naples is awful, but so is anyplace at the Jersey shore during the summer not to mention any shopping day in Paramus or trying to go into Princeton at 3:00 pm. At night it's another world here. Quiet. Summer will be interesting. No major bug problems yet. But it's been very very dry. Haven't gone out to shoot anywhere yet. Just window shopped at Bass Pro; Walmart sells long guns and ammo. (Shotgun ammo is right on the shelf where (gosh!) a child could pick it up! Boo hoo! Oh the humanity! Call Al Sharpton! Wait, he's here already, protesting in Tallahassee today against Stand Your Ground, never mind). Dicks is now open in the same mall as Bass Pro as well as another location in Ft Myers. There's a new store opening up in Bonita Springs called Rural King (I guess the new Agway) and the newspaper circular had a 10% off any in-stock ammo coupon. Got to love it. But I'm still holding a NJ license so metamorphisis is not yet complete. Here are some of the places I plan to check out when I get some time. When my shooting buddy and I made the mad 18 hour dash down from NJ to FL with my guns and dogs loaded in the car, I noticed along I-75 there's another place called Sarasota Trap Skeet & Clays which is only about 90 minutes away (I-75 speed limit is 70, and except for rush hour traffic really moves along). The Collier County Sheriff's range is open two Saturday mornings per month to the public for no charge. Pistol only. No qualification needed ,just show up. The Lee County Sheriff's range requires frangible ammo and an app/class/ID but it is said to be very nice, with good ventilation. There is also the Cecil M Webb range in Punta Gorda run by Fish & Wildlife, which people on forums seem to either love or hate.

Mandatory sentences come from politicians trying to get control of unelected judges and prosecutors. Three strikes comes from the public (Initiative & Referendum) trying to get control of politicians. So the I&R laws usually don't work right out of the box and need to be refined later. But the alternative to 3 strikes is vigilantism which nobody wants, though I think it's the 'hood's response via "no snitch" Really the line to throw back at them "If it saves one life".

So assuming he's over 65 and has paid medicare taxes (or maybe not..does it matter?) he should be able to get in through Open enrollement or a Special Enrollment period based on losing his private coverage. I found a great new blog last night called Charleston Thug Life We could definitely use something like this to get the word out that it isn't the gun laws that are the problem it is the liberal judges and prosecutors and revolving door catch-and-release legal system that keeps these thugs on the streets. Shows info from some kind of offender data system (presumably public domain) Also shows Facebook pages for some of the thugs, see if you can understand some of the language (the author of the blog calls it Thugbook). Lots of good reading here.

I noticed something in an article in the Patch online newsletter about the latest enforcement programs against thugs using guns in Trenton. TIDE and TAG. TIDE is the enforcement teams of state troopers and federal agents, TAG is the prosecution of these gun offenders. (Hoffman is acting attorney general John J Hoffman.) From the Patch article: When the offenders are arrested by TIDE partners, Hoffman has mandated a "zero tolerance" prosecution policy that will effectively increase the sentence imposed on gun offenders in the targeted categories found in possession of a gun to at least 3 ½ years in state prison without possibility of parole. The current normal sentence is one year. "We cannot tolerate this tide of violence that has innocent bystanders being shot on their porches," Mercer County Prosecutor Joseph L Bocchini Jr said. "My office is proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with the Attorney General, the New Jersey State Police and the Trenton police. I have assigned my first assistant prosecutor and senior legal staff to move TAG cases through the criminal justice system. These offenders can expect us to fight for high bails; they will see expedited indictments; and they can count on us to argue for stiff sentences." Oh really. Argue for stiff sentences. So tell me if I am getting this right. NJ had a mandatory minimum sentence of 3 years for providing a gun to a minor under age 18. Christie signed a law (S2804) extending this to 3 1/2 years as part of the infamous 10 gun laws. Prior to the TIDE and TAG programs , it was the policy of the Mercer County prosecutor (maybe all NJ county prosecutors) to plea bargain these cases down to 1 year!! Once this is over, there is really nothing to stop them from going back to the same system? My reaction to this is outrage. The prosecutor routinely does not enforce the gun laws against violent criminals. I finally found this on nj.com, it is buried pretty good, with only 20 comments (versus 744 on the scorching playground story and hundreds on other front page gun stories). I am kind of amazed to even see this kind of admission. We should really call them out on this. In addition to our constant argument to enforce existing laws before creating new ones, there's also the implication that these steps would have helped prevent some of the recent deaths and officer shootings. Following Trenton Mayor Tony Mack’s request for more officers to be paid for by the state in response to the city’s escalating violent crime problem, Acting Attorney General John J. Hoffman announced a pair of programs to help combat crime in the city. Calling the city’s murder rate “catastrophic,” Hoffman announced initiatives that focused on deploying more law enforcement officers to combat shootings in the city’s most violent neighborhoods and simultaneously arresting and prosecuting gang members, repeat offenders and drug dealers who carry guns in public. “The death earlier this month of Barry Church, an innocent man caught in crossfire while sitting on his porch, is emblematic of the escalating gun violence in Trenton, which is nothing short of catastrophic,” Hoffman said. “While gangsters and drug dealers are more likely to be gunned down, the truth is that nobody is safe from these brazen shootings and murders that occur even on busy streets in broad daylight. We won’t tolerate it, and we’re coming out in force. Our message to the thugs terrorizing Trenton is simple: Get your guns off the street, or we’re going to take you off the street.” Trenton is on pace to set a record for the number of homicides in a single year. The record is currently 31, back in 2005. As of Thursday, there were 29 gun murders in Trenton for the year. Hoffman announced the programs during a press conference in Trenton on Thursday afternoon. The first program is called the “Targeted Integrated Deployment Effort” (“TIDE”) program. It’s an intelligence-driven surge in deployments to suppress violent crime. The "Gutter Helmet" they advertise on TV will come to your house and his initial quote to us was around $30k .. I kid you not. Then they try to work you down to 10k or 20k by saying you'll be a model home or something. Keep in mind the gutters and leaders themselves would only cost around 1500. We had a different kind of gutter shield put over our gutters instead. Solid metal, wraps over the edge of the gutter leaving a gap so surface tension moves the water into the gutter. I forget how much extra it was, but the whole project was under 3k, I may be mistaken on how much was the gutters and how much for the gutter shield. Problem is, as has been stated, lots of overflow during the rainy season, massive icicles during the freezing weather and of course it's worse during the subsequent thaw as they drip drip drip on your head. Screws up the landscaping too. Personally I would never buy another house on a lot with trees again. The shade is nice but the attendant crap falling off them, mildew, bugs, etc. just isn't worth it. Plan on power washing and painting your siding and deck every year for example. Plus the added bonus that they fall on your house and wires at the most inopportune times. I regret buying the gutter shield it would have been better having the "Ned Davis " franchise come around and scoop them a few times a year. It is a poor ROI in other words.
