this is the response I got from Menendez after sending letters to congress every day for the last 2 weeks. Zero from Lautenberg or my US Rep. ---- Thank you for contacting me to express your opposition to a ban on assault weapons. Your opinion is very important to me, and I appreciate the opportunity to respond to you on this issue. As your Senator, I strongly defend the rights of citizens to use firearms responsibly for recreational purposes or protection of one's family and home. At the same time, I vigorously support efforts to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and gangs that wish to use them against society. The Federal Assault Weapons Ban expired on September 13, 2004. On this, as with any issue, there are many different views. I appreciate you taking the time to express your opinion on this important issue. Please be assured that I will keep your views in mind. Again, thank you for sharing your thoughts. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I may be of further assistance. I invite you to visit my website (http://menendez.senate.gov) to learn more about my work in the United States Senate.
  2. that's the same town the NJ legislator is from that suggested police interviews & house inspections for firearms permit. Thread w/link is on here somewhere from last week
  3. so I didn't see it mentioned by the OP...is this a public or a private school?
  4. I'm sending some variant of this every day using the congress.org contact form http://www.congress....=ML&MC_targets= This is short & to the point targeting the FACTS and hoping for some response that I doubt I'll get. If you're not contacting your representative government you're not doing your job to preserve our rights...election is over and unless we start getting some recalls or impeachments this is our only avenue to be heard directly. I agree with what others have said here about participating in and donating to advocacy groups...but I plan to make my voice head directly as much as possible. If you have the opportunity to engage your representative or our senators in person you should take advantage of it. Do yourself a favor and make sure your congressional district hasn't changed. I voted in district 7 in Nov, I was on their list at the ballot location, but between then and now I've been gerrymandered into district 12. Make sure you're talking to the right person! http://www.govtrack....ress/members/NJ Elected Representatives Multitudes of data show gun bans & functional restrictions (i.e. stock, mag capacity, etc) have zero effect on violent crime. The differentation here is gun crime vs violent crime; and you're smart enough to know the difference. Here are links from gov't websites with stats that support this. This is fact, not opinion. FBI and English Home Office Crime Data -http://www.fbi.gov/a..._group_2011.xls -http://www.homeoffic...812?view=Binary -http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/crime-in-the-u.s/2011/crime-in-the-u.s.-2011/tables/expanded-homicide-data-table-8 I have ideas on how to improve the process by which we license people to own guns, because the process on the books even in the more restrictive states has holes that MUST be addressed to keep weapons out of the wrong hands, but this has nothing to do with gun registration, bans, or functional restrictions and everything to do with WHO and HOW. Please fulfill the function conceived by the framers and think rationally about what is best for the people when the people can't think rationally for themselves. Please act for them, and not for yourselves. Please represent the majority of your constituents rather than your loud and rich base. Hoping for true leadership and not pandering myNameHere
  5. Damn my bad...i was looking at the total firearms row...dumb by me. I'll edit my prev post
  6. EDIT: Because I'm dumb I originally looked at the total firearm rows instead of the rifle rows, so here's data that supports the author of the aforementioned article; and my foot in my mouth + apologies for poor reading Would be nice if this article cited their sources. Here's the FBI website with supporting data. http://www.fbi.gov/a...e/violent-crime http://www.fbi.gov/a...de-data-table-8 http://www.fbi.gov/a...de-data-table-7
  7. This is the ONLY link i could find to the full episode. Couldn't find it on showtime and it's not in its entirety on youtube. Worth 30 mins if you're interested. It's season 3 Episode 9 in case the link doesn't work you can try to google another one. http://www.free-tv-video-online.me/player/gorillavid.php?id=rupdy1u120sj
  8. If you ever testify in court, you might wish you could have been as sharp as this policeman. He was being cross-examined by a defense attorney during a felony trial. The lawyer was trying to undermine the police officer's credibility... Q: 'Officer --- did you see my client fleeing the scene?' A: 'No sir. But I subsequently observed a person matching the description of the offender, running several blocks away.' Q: 'Officer, who provided this description?' A: 'The officer who responded to the scene.' Q: 'A fellow officer provided the description of this so-called offender. Do you trust your fellow officers?' A: 'Yes, sir. With my life.' Q: 'With your life? Let me ask you this then officer. Do you have a room where you change your clothes in preparation for your daily duties?' A: 'Yes sir, we do!' Q: 'And do you have a locker in the room?' A: 'Yes, sir, I do.' Q: 'And do you have a lock on your locker?' A: 'Yes, sir.' Q: 'Now, why is it, officer, if you trust your fellow officers with your life, you find it necessary to lockyour locker in a room you share with these same officers?' A: 'You see, sir, we share the building with the court complex, and sometimes lawyers have been known to walk through that room.' The courtroom EXPLODED with laughter, and a prompt recess was called.
  9. Ensure even less accountability for the elected officials: http://www.cnn.com/2012/12/29/politics/congressional-watchdog-group-threatened/index.html?hpt=hp_c2 Yes its a little "tinfoil hat" and yes i'm sure the OCE could probably be more effective, but its better than nothing.
  10. anybody know the date of publication for this research? I understand getting this amt of data is not trivial and will almost always be at least 3-5 years old, but I'd like to know if this was published in the last week or a couple years ago. EDIT: Found it...March 2007 http://law-journals-books.vlex.com/source/harvard-journal-law-public-policy-2975/issue_nbr/%2330%232
  11. thanks BlueLineFish...that makes a lot of sense. appreciate it!
  12. I find the ratio of "successful" rape to attempted rape to be pretty disturbing, and speaking to a woman's inability to defend herself against a stronger attacker. Would be interesting to compare this to CCW allowing states A question for the LEOs if they're comfortable answering it. the "clearance rate" for rape seems low around 1/3...tho i have no basis for this comparing to other statistics...it just feels low. is this because charges end up getting dropped or because we're not able to nail down assailants with sufficient evidence? I don't plan to do anything with a response, just curious i guess...i have a daughter and that rate is kinda scary to me. http://www.njsp.org/info/ucr2011/pdf/2011_sect_2.pdf
  13. not that i don't like the quote...but i've been to the statue of liberty and the only thing i've ever seen there is the "poor huddled masses" poem. Is this really over there? I googled & binged for 15 minutes and could find nothing indicating that quote is actually there. I'd like it to be...but i don't think it is
  14. Thanks everyone! I went with a few samplers off CigarsInternational...appreciate the fast help!
  15. Thinking of getting my Dad some cigars for xmas. Nothing crazy, he's not upscale with his stuff but I'd like to get him something reasonably nice that won't slaughter my bank account. He smokes while golfing primarily, sometimes while riding the tractor so just something that tastes good (not heavily flavored like those vanilla things though) is usually his speed Anybody have websites or local shops (i'm in Union county) they'd recommend?
  16. Anybody have an MOE rail section of the medium or large variety handy and could measure how far apart the mounting screw holes are? I just got a mini-scout-mount for my Mini 14 (http://www.brownells.com/optics-mounting/scope-bases/rifle-bases/mini-scout-mount-prod24756.aspx) and wanted to put a side mount flashlight on there using the holes on the side. Only problem is the side rail sections are $20-30 whereas the MOE sections are like $8. I think MOE sections are also lighter, and the Mini 14 ain't light to start with so trying to keep the weight down (yeah i know its just a few ounces...and yes i'm a sissy). I bought the small rail section and it doesn't match up. So if anybody has measurements please let me know...trying to just mount a streamlight TLR-1s on the side so don't want any crazy offset mounts with big lights...again yes because of the weight and yes because i'm a sissy.
  17. 1000+ rounds and no issues. Trigger certainly ain't terrible...no its not a Giselle but better than a lot of other stock triggers I've shot. Good buy
  18. Anybody have suggestions on how to mod or tweak your standard AR15 mag pouches to hold a mini 14 10 round mag? I'm about to start trying stacked cardboard or my daughters old blocks at the bottom just to bump them up enough. Can't use magpuls or anything else on the end of them b/c there's not enough clearance. Anybody have something that's worked for them consistently?
  19. If you get a barrel that isn't threaded (i.e. the M&P 15 Sport http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product4_750001_750051_785513_-1_757785_757784_757784_ProductDisplayErrorView_Y) does the pinned & welded muzzle break/comp rule still apply? I don't mind getting a nice comp put on the end, but it seems to me this part of the law wouldn't apply in this instance since I can't just go put an evil flash hider on it.
  20. had been looking for a siphon for a long time...any recommendations?
