  1. I've only shot about 15 rounds of 44 magnum but didn't enjoy it one bit! At the time I was thinking of buying a model 29. After that experience and given the high cost of ammo, I stuck with 38/357.
  2. I waited an hour or so on a Sunday morning in the fall. Their rental o/u guns were pretty nice and I think maybe $20 or so for the day. I had only shot once before and did fine so as long as someone in the group knows the basics, should be ok. At each station you get to launch a pair without shooting first to see where they go. Unless you have trouble walking, I'd not bother with a cart, other groups ahead will slow the pace anyway. Have fun!
  3. I recently sent one back to Colt through a FedEx hub that takes firearms. They will send back directly to me, same gun though.
  4. Submitted late Saturday April 20, Approved Tuesday May 7. 17 calendar days.
  5. I lived in Carrboro for two years (near Chapel Hill) and visit fairly often toward the Myrtle Beach area. Great state, lots of variety, killer BBQ!
  6. I believe they're not supposed to indicate why but often do despite the law. My PD said it was just employment verification, but the HR person showed me the form and it was the same the references receive with firearms related questions. Even if it is just verification, return address can be firearms investigation unit.
  7. Hmm I do too, although that's what's in the browser. Here's a link to the TTAG article which then links to page, thanks for the notice. http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/2013/03/robert-farago/the-mayors-against-illegal-violence-want-you/
  8. I saw this over on TTAG, https://www.popvox.com/bills/us/113/x101. It's a petition for MAIG "common sense" proposals, but it does give you the option to vote against, which I did. Even the auto generated letter that's sent says "I don't support common sense laws" or something to that effect.
  9. The unsupported theory is to prevent straw purchases.
  10. I can confirm Pizza Bob's measurements, I just checked my 686+ and SSR with calipers and both are the same. The trigger on my SSR is lighter and smoother, but the 686+ is pretty new whereas the SSR may have 500 more rounds through it so that may have lightened it up some. iRescue, I got the SSR first but then wanted something a little smaller in size so got the + too. Although it's a larger gun, the SSR feels a little lighter in some ways due to the squared off barrel and angled underlug. I swapped out the stock hogue grips on the 686+ for laminated combat style ones. I'm not an expert, but if you have any more questions about differences between the two please feel free to ask.
  11. I'll echo the revolver sentiment! My first was the 686 SSR, I've since added a few others (and a 1911 too). With revolvers there are some nice more historical options too, depends on what you're looking for. Like if a 686 or 586 feels a little large you can get a used Model 19 or 66 or if you want beefier can get a 27 or 627.
  12. Thanks. I ordered some, the confirmation says back order tentative arrival to Cabelas 3/25/13.

    SIG 226

I have a 226 X5 All Around and 229 Stainless Elite. Shooting the 226 is super easy and very accurate but it is a large gun. I actually use the 229 more due to its slightly handier size.
  14. Looks like the cheaper bulk packs are gone. Others still left!
  15. I agree, Chris and Marshall are both very friendly and helpful. They have good ammo prices as well.
  16. Nice job Anthony. Also agree the article provides from multiple points of view.
  17. I agree with others that diversification is great. In two trips to different LGS in the last week I asked after 45 ACP, 45LC, 9 mm, and 38 ammo availability. One would sell me 1 box of 45 ACP and half of 45 LC, the other 1 45 ACP and 1 9mm. I'll also second a recommendation for a 357 revolver. Personally I enjoy revolvers and it gives you something that'll shoot 38 and 357.
  18. I have around 10 or so handguns with a small utility closet to fit the safe in, so the 30x20 size seemed about right. I won't be storing long guns in it. Thanks for the feedback so far.
  19. Does anyone have experience with Cannon Home Guard safes? I'm looking for a smallish safe that offers some theft/fire deterrent beyond the security safe style boxes but like to still be able to move it solo with a hand truck. Similar options seem to be offered by Mesa, American Security, and Liberty. My budget is up to around $1,000. Thanks!
  20. Where are you getting your information from njpilot?
  21. My permits were "issued" on 10/26 although I didn't actually receive them until a few weeks later thanks to Sandy. Now due to OGAM and the NICS processing delays I'm bumping up against the 90 day expiration to take possession of my 3rd handgun. I have already dropped off 2 others for extension, so want to avoid that if possible. Does anyone know the last date I can actually use the permit? I'm thinking 1/24 which is the 90th day starting with 10/27 as Day 1, but am worried it could be 1/23 which is tomorrow. I gave my background check info on Friday, just waiting for it to come back and wondering if I need to make a stop at the local PD tomorrow to ask for an extension. Thanks!

    S&W 686 grips

I have some from Herrett's http://www.herrett-stocks.com and gungripsupply.com, happy with both!
  23. Agree, great people there! I usually deal with Lisa, but anyone answering the phone has been helpful. When I've called and they didn't have something in stock, they called their sources and got back to me in a few minutes, not a few days or never. I did buy some ammo there when I couldn't drive further and thought it was a little high, but they have beat others on pistol prices.
  24. If nice looking and larger caliber are the requirements, Smith and Wesson Model 29 fits the bill. Should be able to find a nice used blued model. Or if stainless is preferred, can get the 629.
