Yes, #1 is right on. And I have been consulting my tax accountants, however it's like herding cats and I can't get a solid answer from them. They basically give every answer with *but we can't guarantee anything/to be safe just pay NJ" - I guess I need a new accountant whose answer should just be "move to NH or Delaware" Whatever, this wasn't meant to be about taxes, that's for me to deal with. Just thought forum would appreciate the predicament as it's another ex of NJ overreaching where it shouldn't. #2 Transport - clearly I know how to transport my firearms and I was unintentionally vague there. It was more along the lines of: if I purchase a NH home and then am considered a NH resident and not a NJ resident, could I get in trouble for going to NJ to pickup my guns and move them to NH. I guess I can answer it myself, and just abide by Federal handgun laws while driving from point A to B.

I guess I'm forced to agree. So my decision is to buy a property in NH, claim residency ther, and live and earn a living in Bermuda. I will always pay my Fed taxes and happy to follow the laws of my new home state, wherever it ends up being. It just won't be NJ.

In my opinion I did leave NJ. I literally live in Bermuda, moved out of NJ, and have no plans to return to NJ in the future. I plan to move back to the US in probably 6-10 years and have no idea where I'll live. I do not think NJ has any right to take money from me when I don't live there or hold any property.

We are paying Federal taxes and have no issue with that as we're American citizens and I fully support my country, as I expect them to support me and my beliefs. However, NJ shouldn't be taking from my salary as I don't live there, don't work there, don't own property there. We haven't bought or "moved" residency to VT or anywhere yet. I am not too clear on VT income tax and we are just literally starting this process. NH sounds like a better option. I was under the impression VT had no income tax. I clearly have some homework to do...

Basically, by their law we're NJ residents unitl we move elsewhere so they could technically come after us for taxes. I'd hate to get that letter if we didn't pay for like 6 years and the state came after us for $XXXXX

It's kind of ridiculous. Or wait, it's totally ridiculous.... So we literally moved out of our apartment in Hoboken, all of our belongings, furniture, everything and shipped it in a container to Bermuda where we intend to stay for several years at a minimum. The state of NJ doesn't consider our move as an actual move because we didn't move to a different US state. So, in that we didn't lose our NJ domicile NJ law states that we are responsible to pay FULL NJ state income tax on our salaries. We own NO property, have no connection to the state whatsoever, but according to their laws we are still considered residents even though we don't live there and have no income or property in the state. The danger is that if we move back to NJ in 3-10 years or something they could try and come after us for years worth of back taxes. So we've decided to legally move to another state to avoid paying 3-10 years of 7% tax for NO REASON at all...

Excuse my ignorance on this, but.....so the the FPID card is for NJ only....Is there a VT equivalent or can I just change my address with a VT PD once we find a place there? We are definitely keeping our US citizenship. We moved to Bermuda for work (along with all our property and belongings)....NJ doesn't view our move as a change of residency so they require us to still pay taxes in NJ - hence our decision to move elsewhere. Considering they don't view me as a non-resident, I legally changed my USA residential address, NJ DMV address, mailing etc. to that of a family member's home, which I do consider my US address at this time. I did this so I could legally keep my handguns there in a sealed gun safe.

Hello all. I was hoping to get the opinion of the forum on my situation... I legally own several handguns in NJ. My job has forced me overseas temporarily. Due to NJ being a ridiculous state, my wife and I have decided that we are going to make our permanent residence in the US somewhere other than NJ (likely Vermont). Is there anything I must do in order to legally take my guns with me out of NJ? I know VT is pretty relaxed with their laws compared to NJ, but I wanted to get the opinion and advice from NJGF as it has provided me with a wealth of knowledge and tips since I bought my first handgun a couple years ago. I appreciate any feedback. Thank you very much!

I did a bit more research and it seems that if I change my NJ DMV registration and USPS address to his residence - then that is considered my home and legal address and the guns can be properly stored there. As for the O/U I am going to fill out a Certification of Eligibility to transfer the long gun to him legally so he can use it.

I will still be a US taxpaying citizen and have a legal address - so I would think that changing my address to his home would legally count that as my home, therefore allowing me to store the firearms there.

Now I am a bit worried about the legality of this... Could I not change my official home registration address to my uncles and claim that as my U.S. place of residence and then keep them there in my own safe? Any LEO's have guidance on this? I do have to change my permanent address anyways and was considering doing it there already.

So I guess I have one choice to avoid potential legal problems as there's no way he could get 3 permits before I leave in this state...? 1) I can store them legally in the Firearms Support and Storage in Whippany NJ which would allow me to legally keep them there for the time abroad and I will just have to pay the monthly fees to keep them there. The only other choice which doesn't seem to be advised would be to keep them in his safe. I am completely confident that if I did keep them there, that they would never be removed by anyone except myself. He is completely trustworthy. If I am moving out of the state- since my guns are registered with the NJSP - does that mean they'll get some sort of notice and look for where I am reloacting and try and track the pisols' whereabouts????

I am leaving the country for work for an extended period of time. I will likely be back to the area every 6-12 months over the next few years. I own an O/U and three handguns. My unlce who is very trustworthy, lives in a very safe area, and a gunowner himself has offered to keep my firearms in his secure gun safe. **In regards to the pistols: what is the best way to store them to prevent damage, rust, etc????! I am not a long time owner and have tried to do research on this online, however, I trust this forum for the best answer to my question more than random articles online. I am storing a Kimber Custom 1911 (which I know can rust if neglected), a stainless Ruger Vaquero, and a G19. The O/U is a CZ Canvasback 12ga. Not so worried about the G19 or the 12ga, however the Kimber and Ruger are my babies and I want them in good shape when I'm back. Thanks for your suggestions!! Much appreciated.

Also, just like you, I made the mistake of only applying for one P2P when I initially applied. Needless to say that was a mistake and I had to apply for more and go through some waiting when I bought my next couple handguns...

They are both great pistols. I shot both kinds before purchasing when I had the same exact decision to make as you... I ended up going with the Glock (G19 Gen4). Can't go wrong either way, just choose which one fits your hands better and you're most accurate with.

So I went to the Ken Lockwood Gorge this weekend for the first time ever. I love to fly fish, however, never do it enough in my opinion. I've been lucky enough to fish the Big Sky region in Montana on several ocassions over the last few years, but unfortunately have never done enough fishing in my home state! I have fished the Black River in Somerset and parts of the North Branch of the Raritan in Peapack/Mendham through a buddies private membership to that section of the river. Anyways, this was my first time visiting "the Gorge" this weekend (both Sat and Sun) and I was very impressed that there is such quality waters, trout and access here in Northern NJ. Has anyone else been to the Gorge? Any other places I should check out in the area?

Basically, if I am confident and trustful in leaving them at a family member's home, then I would rather do that than pay someone to hold them. Also that could be annoying if I come home and just want to shoot for a day or two (bc I'd prob have to go there, pay to take them out, pay to put back).

Thanks for the feedback, you guys! I am going to look into the storage facility as an option. From a legal standpoint, would it be illegal for me to not sell my firearms if I am going to be an expat in another country for a number of years? (ie: could I legally leave them at a parent or siblings house for storage if that's not my current main residence??)

I have a hypothetical legal question about a situation I could face. Hypothetically, if I had to leave the country for a period of time (1-3 years) due to a work opportunity - what would I be obligated to do with my firearms by law? Say this situation would have me living in Bermuda where there's no way I could bring them, unfortunately. If this were to happen my plan would be to store my firearms in a locked safe at a immediate family member's residence where only I could get into it when I would come back to the US for visits. The guns would be locked up in a private residence in the suburbs located in a nice, remote area. I would be coming back probably once every 3-6 months and would be checking on them and hopefully using them, oiling, cleaning, etc. Please let me know your thoughts. Thank you!

This.. I live in Hoboken as well and for each of my handgun permits they sent a letter to my employer (large bank) stating specifically that I was applying for multiple handgun permits. My management was fine with it as we have a good relationship, but it definitely was a odd conversation at first. No clue why it's necessary or why they need to get so specific.

I started out as you did with the G19. Then soon after had similar "goals" as you in wanting to add a .45 or .357 and wasn't sure what to get. I went on to get a Kimber 1911 in .45ACP and recently picked up a single action revolver - the Ruger Vaquero in .357. I have been very pleased with all of them. The Ruger was my first revolver, and man is it fun to shoot. Also, the loading/unloading/single-action aspects of it make you slow down and appreciate each shot (as opposed to when I started handgun shooting with the 15 round G19 and would burn through ammo like a bastard).

The last time I was at Lou's in Raritan they had 1-2 of the Spartan IV's in 9mm. I almost bought one of them, but ended up going with a revolver instead. I already have a 1911, but if I didn't I would have got the Spartan. Very nice feel and relatively low price.

On Saturday morning I took my G19 and my brand new Ruger Vaquero .357 to Bullet Hole for some range time with my buddy. We waited in line, then at register "how long?" - we said an hour lane and we need ammo. They told us they could only sell 1 box of 9mm for our shared port. My friend had one box of 50 he brought, so the one we bought gave us 100 total of 9mm. Whatever. I then asked for 38 special or 357 magnum for my new gun. They said they had NONE of either.... So I said an hour of lane time with only 100 rounds probably wouldnt last long. They said come back after you've shot it. So in 20 mins we blasted through all the 9mm using the G19 and my friends P38. I asked to buy another box as we had 30 min plus of range time left. He told us sorry, NO, he couldn't do anything. After insisting how absurd his idea was that we just sit there with no ammo or leave after paying, we convinced him to at least creidt us back the half hour of remaining range time. Blah blah blah...it really sucks that I was unable to shoot my new pistol and that we couldn't buy ammo to actually shoot. The point of my post is where are people finding 38spl, 357mag, 45ACP or 9mm online? Or in stores in Hudson or Morris county? Would love to be able to shoot the new Ruger this week or weekend.
