  1. Doc, with respect- a loaded firearm in an unlocked file cabinet covered by papers in a busy office is, to put it mildly, a really bad idea. Quick access safe, or carry. There are some great instructors in defensive firearms use out there now- you might want to take one of the classes before you arm yourself.....
  2. I have had both, and kept the Marlin. Here is the issue. If the Marlin is pre-Remington, then grab the Marlin. The quality of pre- remington manufactured Marlins is incredible. It will have a JM stamp or say New Haven if it is pre-remington. If it is a new Marlin, made by Remington, then quality varies and go for the Henry. The Marlin Forum is a great resource.
  3. +2 for RTSP. Just made my second purchase there. Their professionalism, courtesy, and willingness to work with a customer are second to none!
  4. I applied for a handgun permit and was told to go online for the state police check-but where? any suggestions appreciated!
  5. Excellent Op-Ed today in the Star Ledger about concealed carry Argued strongly for CC as a crime deterrent. My one issue is that the author argued against requiring any classes for CC, suggesting that no one "needs to be an Olympic shooter". Not sure that is the purpose of a class, any more than a Driver's Ed prepares you for Formula One. I have to say that at least for me, (and maybe I am a minority) the basic pistol classes I took some time ago were instrumental in making me a better and safer shooter. I thought I was a safe shooter, until I learned some basic rules in class, like removing all ammo to a separate place when cleaning my guns. I know requiring a CC class is a controversial idea for some, and I respect that view, but I thought it was the one thing I was not sure bout in an otherwise great article.
  6. Just put money down on a plain-Jane Henry 22 lever action (carbine) Just wondering what folks think of this weapon? with thanks
  7. I'm with some of the above posters. I can't stand actors. Read the book.
  8. appreciate the help on the forum-I knew I couldn't be the only one who thought this was ridiculous, but I thought maybe I was ignorant of some hunting law...
  9. I was in Dick's today (please, don't start on me on that-I know) and was interested in purchasing a youth model of a long gun. (I'm a relatively small dude and the youth model fits better) The salesman told me that to purchase it for myself was illegal. When I asked him "How is it illegal, for hunting? He said, "No-it is illegal in NJ for an adult to shoot a youth model of a gun-even at a range" I have never, ever, heard of this. Is this true?
  10. After some time shooting handguns, I am thinking about getting back into rifles after many years. I am definitely a newbie and would appreciate any advice 1. What is the best rifle for a new shooter interested in range\target? 2.Are there ranges in NJ that rifle shooters like? 3.I know that 22 lr is the cheapest, but I am thinking I might like a centerfire rifle-any thoughts/ 4. I am not considering an AR style-just don't like the look- so any suggestions? with gratitude in advance
  11. 8 days and counting....from what I am reading, got a ways to go.
  12. The last two times I have been to Meltzer's they have had the SR1911 in stock
  13. Forgive me if this question has been asked before. If I would like to extend my permit, with whom do I speak? The police chief? The lady who runs the permit process in my town? With thanks in advance
  14. I have only had positive experiences at rtsp, and have no complaints- but I would ask the owners to put themselves in the shoes of their customers. we often hear how hard it is to run a lgs in nj but think of how hard it is to be a gun owner as well. after waiting months for the fid, the p2p, ogam, we walk into the store excited to purchase and are treated like an interruption rather than a valued customer who may be buying the only gun we can buy in a single year. it is no wonder that disappointed customers take out their frustrations on the lgs. it may not be fair but I think it is the reality
  15. Absolutely correct. Customer service in most places in this state is poor. Try going to your local CVS sometime; or your large supermarket. Few and far between are the retail stores which place a premium on excellent customer service and respectful behavior from employees.
  16. went to del ray two years ago. decent selection of rentals. stuffy dark range but adequate. don't expect pleasant or friendly employees. anyway, that was my experience
  17. The idea that somehow those in the parking lot were insensitive is hogwash. Imagine a man having a heart attack on the golf course. Don't you think that other golfers would be milling around the club and the parking lot?
  18. My observation is that the prices at LGS and online retailers are pretty much coming in line with each other. I do think that certain online retailers, such as CDNN, Brownell's and Midway still offer good deals on hard to find items.
  19. you are correct-the compact with rail is more accurately referred to as the m9A1 compact. my understanding is that essential differences are the rail, beveled mag well, and grip checkering in the A1

    gun cleaning

I have been a pistol owner for over a year now. I clean my guns with the old school tools-bore cleaner, lubricant, rod and patches, etc. My guess is this is how Wyatt Earp cleaned his guns. I enjoy the relaxing cleaning of my guns, but lately have been looking at some of the new cleaning products such as CLP and the so called "tactical" cleaners... Just wondering if you all have any thoughts on the old school vs some of the newer products....
