  1. If you have a fixed FS, choices are limited. Trijicon is one option. I remember there was an alternative option for when you're installing an adjustable rear sight. A target front sight is slipped over the original FS and pinned. Drilling will be required. For me, I got fed up with the lack of options and drilled a hole with a 1/16" bit and filed a groove on the top with a round file to expose the hole making it into a channel and inserted a 0.06" FO as you would with any other FS. Not as bright as you can only insert so much of the FO into the available length of the FS, but it was a way better improvement for USPSA matches than the boring white dot.
  2. Strange that it would do that since you have an external extractor. I assume the gun cycles when fired, but the brass gets its way back into the chamber? No round stripped from the mag trying to fight its way into the chamber? You can try and do a quick test. Disassemble the gun and take out the barrel and bushing. Slip an empty brass into the breech face and extractor. If the brass falls out, the extractor is not putting enough tension on the brass to hold it. That needs to get fixed. Now if it is holding, then check the extractor hook for deformity or damage. Maybe the hook face is not profiled well, is rounded or angled funny when it should be square. Or maybe the hook just broke off. If that's all fine, then try looking at the ejector. Try cycling some empty brass using only the slide on the frame, leaving out the barrel and recoil spring. See what happens to the brass when it hits the ejector. It should start ejecting nose first out of the ejection port. If it's not doing a thing, then definitely something wrong with the ejector. Maybe the ejector face needs to be reprofiled. Last but not least, maybe the recoil spring is too heavy. I was getting that issue when I switched out the recoil spring on my 45 with an extra heavy 18.5# spring. Heavy spring with light factory loads makes for a crappy match day. If you don't want to deal with the headache of diagnostics, the only place I know nearby is OMG Customs in Bayonne. Give Rick a try.
  3. Here's my Pistol Dynamics custom 2011 built by Paul Liebenberg. May not be a 1911, per se, but definitely worth showing. No pixie dust here. Thanks Bullzeye for the lead.
  4. Give another call. Maybe the CO just signed them all. Mine was dated on the 14th.
  5. Sweet custom. I hope mine comes out as nicely as yours.
  6. Got the call from Gloria today. PPs are in my hands. Eight weeks exactly. Give a call if you didn't get one already.
  7. That sux. Thanks for the update. Was hoping my paperwork will come through this week or the next, but my hopes are dwindling.
  8. So this is what I'm trying to modernize. http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c279/eskimoboy1/Hmongknifes005.jpg From the original age old design, I can see that it's really meant for swinging and chopping with the butt flared out like an axe handle, but I don't like the fact it doesn't have a finger guard forward of the grip. You'll get a nasty cut if you don't cut off your fingers first.
  9. What grit belt are you using to finish off with for the final grind?
  10. The interesting thing about the blacksmiths that make the knives forge steel from old truck leaf springs. From my sketch, the blade length is going to be roughly 10" long. 3/16" thick at the spine. If successful, this will be the stencil fir making future knives with better quality steel. You are correct that this Home Depot steel will not amount to much in edge retention, but it'll be forgiving to the sanding belts. It's an experimental profile. We'll see. I've been re-inspired to continue this project to the next stage.
  11. Since this is my first time too, I just bought some cheap steel from Home Depot to play with. I don't expect it to hold an edge, but it's a good starter steel to screw up on. I've cut the length I wanted and drew out the profile. That project has been sitting on my desk for a couple years now. I should finish it one of these days. I think the profile is quite unique except to Southest Asian folks. I'm just taking their profile a step further to fix what I feel are unsafe flaws in their design. I do have a very small furnace that I tried hardening cheap import damascus. Let's say it was as hard coming as it was going in. Oil quench, water quench, air. Nothing even brought it to the point of being brittle. I left it as is.
  12. When you buy blanks from a distributor, do they come annealed? I figure if they came pre-hardened, they would reek havoc on the files. Since I don't have a belt grinder, I've been considering using a belt sander to do the initial grind. Very DIY garage way of doing it.
  13. Yes we were. Thanks for all the info. You actually RO'ed me at my first OB match. The path you took on the last stage made me start thinking out of the box. You did mention you were going to do something different than anyone else. Too bad you were the last one or I might've mimic'ed you. I was trying to load 16 for the rifle stage like you and run the first string till bolt lock on the rifle stage but completely forgot that my mags don't like being fed to capacity with the bolt down. That plan went in the crapper. Lol.
  14. Sorry, just saw this post. I was at Shongum last weekend. If you guys were there, I would've said hi. Was in squad 2. Had my first attempt at a Polish plate rack. Super fun, but if that thing starts spinning, got a lot of chasing to do. I got my feet wet first at Shongum and recommend there as a great place to start. The pace is slower and the stages usually not as intense, so you're not overwhelmed. For the first timers, just forget about the clock. Learn the safety rules, commands and don't get DQ'ed. Lot of friendly people around to help. Having done a couple matches at Shongum, OB was an eye opener. Way more fun, but way more challenging stages. I was overwhelmed at my first match there. My friend attended his very first match ever at OB. They are very helpful too for first timers. ROs helped my friend a lot. Everyone gotta start somewhere. Just sign up to one and go. They'll walk you through step-by-step on what you need to do. Don't worry what others have and who your competing against. Go there, be safe and have fun.
  15. Tick tock, tick tock. Any updates on your PPs Alan? Crickets on my end.
  16. Looking good. That's gonna be a nice slicer when your done. You going kydex or leather for the sheath? Is that a flat grind? You've gone way farther than my project. I got a raw piece of steel with a sketch on it and buffalo horn. Not much progress since then other than collecting dust.
  17. Sitting on desk waiting for pick up or waiting to be signed? I'm going into week 6 waiting in Millburn.
  18. How's the ports working for you?
  19. Wow. The real McCoy all the way down to the accessories. Two-tone mags and lanyard mags. Great collection.
  20. Show off. Lol! She's a beauty from a great builder.
  21. I heard there's no reminder emails either so I set up a reminder on my calendar when it's close to renewal time to make sure I don't forget. Don't want to pay the extra $30 all over again.
  22. I use a Safariland 5188 OWB holster and Israeli Tac mag pouches for my 92FS in USPSA. Works well and won't break the bank. They are also IDPA approved if you don't drop and offset it. My recommendation, dump the paddle and use the belt loops for the holster. I feel the holster angle is better that way.
  23. I hear you about the slide mounted safety. I have a 92FS and wish that safety was only a decocker only. Flipped it twice on me in a match. I've only touched a P88C many years ago and just this Saturday found one at a store in LI. To my shock, it was practically NIB with all paperwork, test target from the factory and original box. I remembered how comfortable it felt in my hand back then and even now, feels exactly the same. DA pull was smooth out of the box and much better than the USP Compact I handled not too long ago. SA was a bit heavy, but still clean break. Helps that the P88C comes from the factory with an overtravel stop. The store was asking way too much though. These 2 were always on my want list. Undecided at the moment.
  24. If you had a choice between the 2, what would you pick? BHP would be the Browning Belgium made one.
