  1. Forget it. I'm not moving to Maryland. New Jersey is enough of a hassle. Looks like PA is a better bet. Thanks to all for your time and input. I had no idea it was that bad in Maryland.
  2. HODGIE. Thanks so much! Very helpful. I'll check out the Maryland forum.
  3. I already legally own the firearm. Do I need to register it? What process do I need to go through? If I already own it I'll be damned if they're going to make it difficult for me to keep it.
  4. Thanks everyone. Hey Dan_G that's great info. Maybe I picked the right county. Move is not definite yet, but it is good to know. I just need the specifics in case I do move so I handle things correctly and legally. Have more research to do I guess. It's just much easier to get it from people that know the laws in different states.
  5. Thinking of a move to Elkton, MD, which I believe is in Cecil County.
  6. Thanks for all the info. Lovely, another messed up state re: gun laws. All I'm curious about is I legally own a handgun already. Is it banned in Maryland and do I need to register it? All of this is going to factor into whether I actually move to the state or not. After everything I went through to get it I don't want to lose it.
  7. Hello all. Curious if anyone is familiar with firearms laws in Maryland. I legally own a handgun in NJ and am curious what the laws are if I decide to move to Maryland. Where is the best place to get accurate information? The only thing I've heard so far is that some handguns are banned; you likely don't have to register a handgun you now legally own in another state; and some localities do have restrictions. Frankly, I don't know if what I'm reading is correct or not. What am I required to do if I move? What are the transport laws between states (in other words, if I were to drive from NJ to Maryland (through Delaware) if I moved)? Thanks to anyone who can provide feedback. Much appreciated.
  8. Thanks to PK90 for the clarification regarding the registration of firearms in my post. The rest of it was correct based on my personal experience. Good luck to cboncal1972. Hope the process goes well for you.
  9. Hello and welcome to the NJGF. I'm new here myself but everyone here is very nice and usually very helpful with almost any question you might have. I went through the permit process myself this past Summer. You will not get a concealed carry permit in NJ. Virtually no one but law enforcement is usually granted one. Welcome to NJ! lol The first thing you need to do is go to your local police department and ask for an application for an FID (Firearms Identification Card) and Permit Application. You need to fill out the form where indicated but not sign it. You will have to go back to the PD with it and sign it in front of a detective after answering some questions. The PD will usually give you instructions about what forms of ID you need to have with you when you go back with the application. After you've provided ID, signed the form and spoken with a detective you will be given a form with instructions for fingerprinting (it is required for an FID and permit). You have to pay a $60.00 fee online and then make your appointment. Once the fingerprinting is done the police department is notified. They then proceed with an extensive background check. (My suggestion would be to also bring any papers you had from when you lived in CT along with other required ID). If all goes well, the detective signs off on the paperwork and then it is passed on to the police chief for signature and then you wil be notified to come pick up your FID and permit(s) and sign them in the presence of either the detective or an assigned person. The permits issued by NJ are good for registering firearms you already own or used as the required paperwork to purchase a new firearm. You are required to register any firearms you do own. You can request as many permits as you want, keeping in mind though that from the date of signature by the police chief all permits issued at that time are only good for 90 days from the date of issuance, so the minute they are released to you the clock is ticking. The fee for an FID card is $5 and $2 for each permit. In total the entire process took about 4 weeks from start to finish for me. In some cases it is longer depending on the township you live in. My experience was painless. I'm a proud new gun owner and it's nice to see another woman on the board. There are more than us two, but since I'm new to the forums as well I haven't spoken to many of them.
  10. You guys are great! Thanks for the feedback.
  11. Hello everyone. I just joined the NRA. I plan to put the sticker on my car. Does anyone know if you can be stopped by a cop just for having the sticker on your car -- is that considered probable cause? I can see if you are stopped for something else they then might ask if you are carrying firearms in the vehicle, but otherwise I'm thinking you couldn't only be stopped for them noticing the sticker.
  12. I wanted to share my observations about something. Last week I went to a local Dick's location to purchase some 9mm ammo. They asked for my FID card. No big deal. The guy then proceeded to log in a book the information off my FID and how much ammo I purchased. My question is -- is this legal for them to do? Isn't it a privacy violation? All of us who reside in NJ know the process we needed to go through and the extensive background checks needed to complete the process to obtain an FID and any permits we need. Is this just a company policy Dick's has or are all establishments that sell ammo required to do this? I acknowledge the fact that I am a new gun owner and not considered experienced, but even so it just seems ridiculous to me that all NJ gun owners who have already gone through state and federal background checks and been fingerprinted cannot even purchase ammo without going through this every time?. Please enlighten me if I'm unreasonably annoyed. It just seems ridiculous to me
  13. Hi. This is a great post. I can relate to your woman friend. I too was taken to a range with a friend having never picked up a gun in my life. I was a nervous wreck and obviously a terrible shot having never used a gun. I did however end up thoroughly enjoying myself. I shot a few of my friend's guns at that time and then picked up a handgun belonging to his friend who was with us and shot it. It was an M&P9 (9mm). I loved the way it felt in my hand, I obviously wasn't a great shot with that one either, but had the best experience with that one. Later on the friend who took me to the range came across a YouTube channel he shared with me and a couple of videos in particular. This one (http://www.youtube.c...eature=g-user-u) by Faliaphotography. If for any reason you cannot get the link to work, search for it's title "Smith & Wesson M&P9c - Full Review of An Exceptional Pistol". I subscribe to this woman's channel on YouTube. Pass this link onto your friend, she might find it useful. So, I researched the M&Pc compact and rented it to try on a trip to an indoor range. And, I absoutely love it. It is a perfect first handgun for a woman. There are interchangeable grips and it is an extremely comfortable handgun for a woman with small hands. And I can proudly say I loved it and shooting so much that I went through the FID process and got my permit -- I now own the M&P9c! Check out my other posts. Good Luck to your woman friend. Have her come back here and share when she buys her first gun -- she can then proudly state she's among the proud female gun owners in NJ!
  14. I posted here a few weeks ago as a new member. At that time I was going through the FID and permit to purchase application process in wonderful NJ. I then posted an update that the process is complete and I picked up all my papers on 7/30/12. Yesterday I bought my first gun!!! I'm now the proud owner of an S&W M&P9c. I absolutely love it! I purchased it at Hague's in West Deptford, NJ. This gun could be purchased for a bit less money from other dealers but I decided on Hagues because I was impressed with the range/shop when I visited there with a friend in early May. Dan and Nick are friendly, professional, very knowledgeable and extremely helpful. I was completely comfortable purchasing my first firearm from them. I would recommend Hagues to anyone looking to purchase a gun. So happy to be among the 1 million plus gun owners in NJ!! Next stop -- Gun For Hire for some classes.
