  1. Wayne, and a few of his cronies, have got to go.
  2. We have a year-round herd of 8-12 does in our little cul-de-sac in Morris County. Most years we have two small bucks chasing them around every October. Just one much larger buck has been strutting around our yard this year. I woke him up on our side lawn, just a few steps from our house, when I was driving home last night.
  3. I generally don't pay much attention to the books most presidential hopefuls feel the need to write to kick off each campaign season, but I just finished Nikki Haley's "If You Want Something Done." I was impressed. It's fairly short; I got through the audio book version in just over 4 hours by speeding up the read back slightly. She tells the story of 10 female leaders--some obvious choices, some kind of obscure but with stories worth telling--who inspired her. She uses that as a device to talk through her own political background and leadership philosophy. It's a good read.

  5. Schrödinger's breakfast 'meat'. So long as the box is sealed, it exists simultaneously as both Taylor ham and pork roll. Only when the package is opened does it revert to a state of one or the other. Which one it reverts to depends on where in the state the package is opened.
  6. Today was another cook day, my 95th cook on the Weber Smokey Mountain cooker. It all started when my daughter asked me to show her how to make my Mom's stew recipe...which is done in a dutch oven or crockpot, but once I was committed to cooking most of the day I figured I might as well smoke something as well. Since I was out of jerky, I sliced up 2.25 lbs of eye of round and cured it for 26 hours with Hi Mountain hickory jerky cure and seasoning. I usually use my own marinade and skip the curing salt, but the Hi Mountain product does make an excellent jerky. I greatly prefer homemade jerky to any commercial jerky I've found. I had half a rack free in the smoker, so I filled that with 5 strips of pig candy, bacon coated in maple syrup and brown sugar, with a bit of chipotle rub to balance out the sweetness. We love pig candy. Pics below The jerky and the pig candy smoke in just 2 hours at 200-225F, and since the smoker was already fired up, I'd planned to next smoke the veggies needed to make another batch of smoked salsa (first described a couple of posts above), including three types of peppers (jalapeños, rehydrated Hatch, and some unknown species from my neighbor's garden). The veggies also smoked for two hours (1 hour for the scallions). I've attaches pics of everything (except some spices) that went into the salsa, and another of the smoked veggies before they want in the food processor. The final product was excellent, good heat, fresh taste, and just the right amount of smokiness.
  7. He was never identified in the movie Oppenheimer, but there were two scenes with a character playing bongos in the background...so there was at least a reference to Feynman in the movie. In the source book American Prometheus, Feynman figured prominently...as he should have.
  8. Agreed, but I'm much less worried about the legality of the move than I am about theft while I'm in transit. And I need to research Illinois a little more...NY doesn't really recognize the FOPA's protections for moving between residences, and it's possible that Illinois is backwards enough to also ignore federal law.
  9. That could help. Motels are often less secure than hotels, but only a motel would offer the option to be that close to my car. If I thought I'd get enough rest, I could also schedule to arrive right at check in time, sleep until 11 pm or so, then get back on the road, not leaving the car unattended during the hours when theft is more likely. I've got CCW permits good clear across the route, except for Illinois and Pennsylvania, and I know I could get the PA permit without too much trouble.
  10. 147 gr is about as good as it gets for 9 mm. Bullet weight (momentum, PF) is more important than kinetic energy for clearing pins off the table. Heavy bullets rule. Back when I was shooting this regularly, I used 180 gr in the .357, and 250 gr in the .45, both unusually heavy for the caliber. But it's fun no matter what you are shooting. Bring extra mags; pins knocked over can sometimes take a lot of additional shots to clear completely off the table.
  11. That might work...my best case for getting on the road would be 11 am (nearly an hour later if I end up on the second relay), and it looks like an hour to the range...so I might get there by noon, and I do have a bunch of pin loads I'd put together many years ago when I ran the matches at CRRC in Princeton Junction. How much waiting for a slot is usually involved? Since I wouldn't be there long, I'd be hoping to pack a lot of shooting into a short time.
  12. Dang...I've got a conflict with a Sunday morning league I shoot. For anyone on the fence, pin matches are a LOT of fun.
  13. I'll resurrect this thread with "Practical Shooting" (Brian Enos) for IPSC-type shooting, "Shooting from Within" (J. Michael Plaxco), "With Winning in Mind" (Lanny Bassham) and either "Successful Shooting" (Bill Pullum and Frank Hanenkrat) or "Position Rifle Shooting" (same authors) for 3-position rifle. For precision pistol, "The New Pistol Shooter's Treasury" is excellent, and free: The New Pistol Shooter's Treasury. I'd start with that one. But I actually came here to recommend Ben Shapiro's "The Authoritarian Moment: How the Left Weaponized America's Institutions Against Dissent". I just finished listening to it; my local library had it available as an audio book, and at just over 6 hours, it's a pretty short 'read'. It's excellent; packed with facts, many of which we've heard, though not in a single compilation like this. Occasionally Shapiro offers up a conclusion that doesn't seem to be supported, but it's rare, and overall an enlightening and entertaining book.
  14. We've thought about the RV...it has potential to work out really well...but it's almost impossible to book a one-way cross-country rental. Cruise America will do it for a Class C, but it's quite expensive. Ironically, we plan to get an RV once we're further into retirement, but I'd really like to move first, because a) it won't cut deeply into our home-buying cash reserves, b) there will be a much larger selection of gently-used RVs out west, and c) it won't create the problem of having two move two cars AND an RV across the country. Haven't ruled it out, but haven't ruled it in, either.
  15. That's been the solution I'm leaning towards, thought the people I've discussed it with thus far either don't have enough time off, or won't get on an airliner. The search continues.
  16. I'm watching the thread with interest, not because I can add to whatever has already been stated, but because eventually (gotta get this house ready to sell, gotta find the new house in Idaho) I'll be moving cross-country. That's usually a 4-5 day drive. Movers won't take the guns or whatever ammo and components I might have left by then. So the car will be packed to the gills with my shooting stuff, though what I have will be legal in all of the states I pass through, and I'll be giving Chicago (maybe all of Illinois) a wide berth just the same. It's not practical to take everything in to a hotel every night. I'd be a nervous wreck leaving them in the car if I'm not in it, no matter how invisible they are. I'm not excited about sleeping in the car every night and only getting meals at drive-throughs. And I haven't yet found anyone willing to share the drive straight-through in a single push. My wife is quite supportive of my shooting habit, but not quite that supportive. No good options, it seems.
  17. They should save time and also consider the attempts by NJ and CA to circumvent Bruen.
  18. That's a head-scratcher, that he is claiming this is all racial discrimination. He's been in public office continuously since 1986...is he of the opinion that people just now realized he's Latino?
  19. We’ll get someone whose politics we hate, sure. But it’s highly unlikely we’ll get someone so criminal. Menendez is one of the most blatantly corrupt thieves ever to occupy a senate seat anywhere. He needs to be gone. He needs to serve serious time. At least the first of these requirements finally seems to be in reach.
