  1. Hello all A "heads-up" for everyone. I shot my SKS a week and a half ago with several boxes of Cabela's "Herter's" 7.62x39 ammo. The box plainly says "Non-Corrosive". Well, I just picked-up the rifle to clean it, and...you guessed it...RUST! The chamber, the bolt face, and around the feed area had a nice coating of RUST! So, while I am cleaning the gun (which was PRISTINE, BTW), I email Cabela's - I sent the info below I have had a problem with your Herter's ammunition; the 7.62x39 I54 gr steel case soft point. The box plainly states "NON CORROSIVE". that is apparently not true; I shot three boxes of this ammo about a week and a half ago thru my Chinese SKS. I just went to clean the gun; and found significant rusting/pitting in the chamber, bolt face, and gas system. I had to drive the gas operating rod out of its tube with a hammer and punch. Before this; the rifle was in pristine condition - I have owned it for years, but I have shot it very sparingly...I do not believe there has been more than 250-500 rounds shot thru this rifle. I am currently cleaning it to ensure that the rust doesn't go further...but your ammo has caused significant damage to my firearm. I then receive this in reply: Response Via Email (Scott G.) 08/16/2013 07:53 PM Hello Jon, and Thank you for contacting Cabela's Product Information Department. Thank you for the email. Even when firing non-corrosive ammunition, it is recommended that your firearm be cleaned after each use. Non-corrosive ammunition, when stored properly, will not corrode in the box. However, any ammunition, when fired, creates fouling that, if not cleaned off of the firearm surfaces can cause degradation of the surfaces. We appreciate your interest in Cabela's and if we may be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us again. Thank you for visiting cabelas.com and come back soon! Sincerely, Scott G. WHAT???? "Non-Corrosive" does NOT MEAN that it won't "corrode in the box"! Needless to say, I am NOT HAPPY. While I decide my next move, I wanted to give everyone a heads-up...BEWARE OF the Russian HERTER'S ammo...apparently it "will not corrode in the box", but it WILL CORRODE YOUR RIFLE!!!
  2. I read this advice years ago: In light of the rising frequency of human/grizzly bear encounters, the Montana Department of Fish and Game is advising hikers, backpackers, hunters, and fishermen to take extra precautions and keep alert for bears. We advise outdoorsmen to wear noisy little bells on their clothing so that the bears are not startled unexpectedly by a human's presence. We also advise outdoorsmen to carry pepper spray with them in case of an encounter with a bear. It is also a good idea to watch for fresh signs of bear activity. Outdoorsmen should recognize the difference between black bear poop and grizzly bear poop. Black bear poop is smaller and contains lots of berries and squirrel fur. Grizzly bear poop smells like pepper and has little bells in it. Montana Grizzly Bear Notice
  3. I just called - this is how it went - "Hello, Governor's office" "Hello,....I'm...from ... and I want to urge the Governor to VETO several bills" "You mean the gun bills?" "Yes..veto all three" "OK - I have them here...I'll let the Governor know" It looks like they're getting the message. Whether they're listening is another matter.
  4. Um...it depends on who inherited the firearms. Read the law - it is below. N.J.A.C. 13:54-1.13 Firearms passing to heirs or legatees (a) Notwithstanding the provisions of this subchapter concerning the transfer, receipt or acquisition of a firearm, a permit to purchase a handgun or a firearms purchaser identification card shall not be required for the passing of a firearm upon the death of an owner thereof to their heir or legatee, whether the same be by testamentary bequest or by the laws of intestacy. A person so acquiring ownership may retain the firearm if he or she meets the requirements of N.J.A.C. 13:54- 1.5 and 1.6. (b) If an heir or legatee is not qualified to acquire a firearm, he or she may retain ownership of the firearm for the purpose of sale for a period of 180 days, which period may be extended by the chief of police or the Superintendent. During such period the firearm must be placed in the custody of the chief of police or Superintendent. © In the case of assault firearms or machine guns disposition shall be in accordance with N.J.A.C. 13:54-5. AND, from the NJ State Police's OWN WEBSITE: http://www.state.nj.us/njsp/faq.html#firearms If I inherit a firearm what must I do? Pursuant to N.J.S.A. 2C:58-3j, a firearm purchaser identification card and/or a handgun purchase permit shall not be required for the passing of a firearm upon the death of an owner thereof to his/her heir or legatee, whether the same by testamentary bequest or by the laws of intestacy. 5. The reverse of this actually happened 10-20 years ago. I am trying to remember the town...(was it Burlington?) I am sure more than just I remember this happening. Police enter the house under suspicion of a burglary...and do a silent search. Son of the homeowner was asleep upstairs and was awoken to sounds of them searching the house (and NOT announcing their presence). Son arms himself with a .25 and shoots first officer when they climb the stairs...If I remember it right, the .25 hit the officer in the badge and was deflected. I do not remember if they returned fire; however I do remember the son was not injured. No charges were filed, as the officers acknowledged they were in the wrong...they should have announced themselves. Does anyone else remember this?
  6. I took a look, but didn't order (I still have plenty of .22, and want to leave them for you guys that have none) I was a bit concerned - the text said ".22 LR", but the photo was a box of .22 WMRF. Which is it? They also now have remington 36 gr copper plated - $6.99 a box of 100

  11. That will never happen. You would have to prove "gross negligence", which is nearly impossible. About the only way you would get the local fire company on "gross negligence" is if you can prove they were throwing gasoline on the fire.... 2A:62A-1.2 - Immunity from civil damages for firefighters at accident scenes 2A:62A-1.2 Immunity from civil damages for firefighters at accident scenes.1. A municipal, county or State firefighter, whether volunteer or paid, shall not be liable for any civil damages as a result of any acts or omissions undertaken in good faith in rendering care at the scene of an accident or emergency to any victim thereof, or in transporting any such victim to a hospital or other facility where treatment or care is to be rendered; provided, however, that nothing in this section shall exonerate a firefighter for gross negligence.
  12. I wasn't going to give away where I saw 'em (well, at least until the fever breaks)...but yes, that was where I saw 'em. Bought a case of 12 gauge clay loads while I was there...good prices.
  13. From the web; Vinyl Chloride's MSDS sheet. EMERGENCY OVERVIEW: Vinyl Chloride is a colorless, liquefied, toxic, flammable gas with a sweet, ethereal odor. Vinyl Chloride is a known human carcinogen and is toxic by all routes of exposure. Contact with the skin and eyes will result in irritation. Inhalation of Vinyl Chloride may produce symptoms of drowsiness, blurred vision, staggering gait and tingling and numbness in the extremities. Contact with the liquid may result in frostbite. Both the liquid and gas pose a serious fire hazard when accidentally released. Vinyl Chloride polymerizes readily when exposed to air, sunlight, heat or oxygen and so can form dangerous explosive air/gas mixtures. Flame or high temperature impinging on a localized area of the cylinder of Vinyl Chloride can cause the cylinder to rupture without activating the cylinder’s relief devices. Provide adequate fire protection during emergency response situations. http://www.mesagas.com/images/Vinyl%20Chloride.pdf
  14. Saw a pair of these yesterday...I didn't even ask to see them 'in person' - they were just sitting in the guncase. The polished stainless looked SO good next to everything else.... Now I can't seem to get them outta my head... This is what I THINK they were - Ruger Vaquero SASS - in .357: http://www.ruger.com/products/vaqueroSASS/models.html?r=y I am currently fighting the urge to go back and look some more...

  16. WOW I read the above, then googled her name - Angela Zane is a one-woman crime wave! NBC 10's report on her - pix and video, including her telling the reporter "Bail me out, and I'll give you the full story." http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/Woman-Arrested-3-Times-in-2-Months-on-ID-Theft-Charges-201370261.html

  21. While I do not believe there is anywhere in NJ not covered by "city limits", there are some with no "discharge" laws. Medford TWP, for example, has none - there was a push about 10 years ago to add a firearm discharge ordinance, but it failed.
  22. A Swiss Army knife - a tinker or cadet-type for normal everyday carry - a classic or a bantam for more formal occasions. Always a Victorinox, and always in the right front pocket (with my comb). EDIT - forgot to mention - a Buck when out deer hunting...usually a bucklite folder with a knife/flashlight combo sheath - I don't know if they still make that combination, but it's been awfully useful...
  23. I thought that too....the sawed-off shotguns...some of those cuts looked VERY fresh....
