  1. Whew. I submitted all my paperwork for my FPID and 2 pistol permits today, a fitting day for it I suppose. I did send a message to Christie through the website and I resolve to do more each time something like this comes up.
  2. What would be an adequate reason to put under the "Reason for exemption request" section for my situation?
  3. I believe my mom inherited them. They were never specifically willed to anyone in my grandmother's will and my mother (and her sister) were next of kin. My aunt doesn't want them, so therefore they must be my mom's legally, from what I have read. That section of the law says "whether the same be by testamentary bequest or by the laws of intestacy"; laws of intestacy seem to apply here since the firearms were not explicitly mentioned in the will. A quote from a law firm's website on NJ laws of intestacy; "This short article is meant to explain in simple terms what happens to peoples’ non-beneficiary designated assets if they die without a Will in New Jersey." it goes on to say... "If there is no surviving spouse, then the entire intestate estate passes to the decedent’s descendants." (From: http://klenklaw.com/articles/article15) What do you think friend? You and Alex got me more curious about the multiple handgun exemption. So If I want to transfer 2 handguns lets say, I will need to put in to the local police for 2 handgun permits and also fill out and send forms SP-015 and SP-016 to the NJSP, with the serial numbers of the two handguns I want to transfer at one time? I do not need to go through an FFL for that, right?
  4. A few years ago my mom received my grandmother's (were my grandfather's) firearms after her passing; a few long guns and a couple of handguns. I would like for either me or my father to be able to take these firearms to the range with peace of mind, knowing that we did everything legally. The firearms were not mentioned specifically in either my grandmother's or grandfather's will and thus as I understand it, my mother legally owns these guns as next of kin and executor of the estate. From my reading it seems I or my father would have to have an FPID and fill out a COE to transfer the long guns to our possession. For the pistols either of us would need to obtain the necessary number of pistol permits and wait the 30 days between the transfer of each handgun. Do I have this correct? My mother cannot simply distribute the firearms to my father or I; they must be transferred as I previously described. I also saw that there are exemption forms that can be filled out and approved by the Superintendent of State Police in order to transfer more than one handgun at once. This seems to be like a lot of hassle when I looked at the forms; I think i can wait 30 days between transfers. PS: All of the guns are NJ legal, that is to say none would be considered "Assault weapons" under NJ law.
  5. Can anyone explain why A3797 is illegal? I read through the bill, but I'm missing where it discloses information to the public.
  6. I was afriad that the Terror Watch list and mental health submission bills would be passed, nothing good can come of those bills. Now we can only hope that Christie vetos the Sweeney malarky. Under that bill new applicants will have the pay the usual $60 plus however much (I'd imagine a couple hundred dollars) for a safety class; the $60 dollar is already too much! It sounds like the training requirement will only apply if you are getting your first FPID or pistol permit however. There are obviously many other things wrong with the Sweeney bill, the reapplication every 4 years, the FPID and pistol permit encrypted on your drivers license, etc.
  7. Thanks guys. With any luck I will get my fingerprints done late next week, otherwise it will have to be the week after.
  8. I just got back from my police department. The clerk wanted me to sign both forms (STS 33 and SP66) with her present, so that scraped the STS 33 as I had already signed and dated. I am currently a full time college student and have no job (did not tell her this), she wanted "unemployed" under the employer section if I was as such. To me it seems to put me in a negative light, which I don’t like. I also got the finger print form, but I am really hesitant to give this Morphotrak company any information let alone my finger prints. They ask for, among other things, social security number as well as occupation, employer name and address. From reading the form it seems if you show up to be fingerprinted with an “incomplete” form you will be out $11 plus your time, no exceptions. Any guidance on how to fill this form out with the minimal amount of info and the fingerprinting process in general? I was already uneasy about this whole process, but the fingerprinting part has noticeably added to it.
  9. Hi all. Checking in on NJGF after stumbling upon you guys from a goggle search. I have my STS 33 and SP 66 filled out and plan to go to my police department with them tomorrow to apply for my FPID. I was little confused on the mental health records form (SP 66); I read somewhere that it needed to be signed in the presence of someone from the issuing department. This seems true as the form has a line labelled as "witness", but some clarification would be helpful. Also is there any benefit to including your social security number since it is not required on either form? I have only been to a range a handful of times, but will be looking to join Range 14 and shoot more regularly. I really like military firearms so I will likely look at surplus military rifles and handguns, primarily. I plan on going to the range with my dad and using his rifles for now. I want to make sure I truly enjoy the sport before applying for pistol permits or buying anything major.
