  1. Oh. Well I don't think that I'll get close enough to shoot these birds in the back either It looks like a DIY solution (not sayin which) is my best bet at his point.
  2. I just googled that. I see Colibri butane lighters and cigar cutters. I don't think I can get close enough to these birds in order to BBQ them or cut their heads off
  3. It's not that I "think that I need head shots". It's my actual experience that proves this. I've seen (and heard) the hits. But the Red Ryder has not killed - or even noticeably injured - the pigeons that I've dealt with (aside from the one headshot). Otherwise I wouldn't be here asking for advice on other options. Whatever. I'm a jarhead. So I think I know my way around a rifle and a target. So if you don't want to believe my empirical experience, then don't. I already explained that I can't use anything louder than this little Red Ryder. And I've already explained that I don't want to use poison. So move on to another thread if my stated experience thus far does not ping your own understanding of the situation.
  4. I find that the hawk tends to pounce on Junco's most of the time. Followed by Mourning Doves and then Blue Jays. The pigeons are very skittish and quicker than you'd actually think. I suspect that the pigeon that the hawk had gotten was one of those that I had previously injured. Because unless you get 'em in the head, they seem to take the hit and then fly away. At least that's my experience with the lever-cocking bb gun that I have. I've seen the hits, but aside from the headshot, they always fly away. And since it's not my intention to shoot to injure, I was hoping to find a more immediately lethal solution. Those birds are big, and the Daisy simply ain't cuttin it.
  5. Ok thanks for the info. That wasn't my understanding, but you obviously have a knowledge of the situation that I do not have. And of course we can't hunt disgusting pigeons.... this is NJ. What was I thinking?!?!?! Anyway..... I won't hunt anything. I'll just treat 'trespassers' as trespassers instead. (this state blows!)
  6. Of course they are. Silly me for thinking like a free man. Thanks for the info before I created a new thread on slingshots.
  7. Actually they are being fed. Well not the pigeons specifically, but birds in general. My neighbor has feeders in his backyard and I have feeders and a small pond in my backyard. So it's a veritable wildlife sanctuary here (residential style)...... which is what draws the hawk to visit regularly. Unfortunately the hawk is non-selective when it comes to which bird it kills/eats. Btw, the neighbors own birds (the large squawky kind), so I need to be able to do my deeds within the confines of my fenced-in yard or else they will get butt-hurt and call the authorities. Therefore I need to be pretty "quiet" about it.
  8. Hmmm.... maybe I'll need to start a separate topic for slingshot recommendations.
  9. Yeah, I already got one of those. So far the hawk and I are tied at 1 pigeon apiece. Although in all fairness to the hawk, it's taken out many other species of birds in the interim. The hawk isn't species specific, but I am.
  10. Pigeons aren't a protected species. They are considered an invasive species. I'm uncertain as to the exact letter of the law, but I'm of the understanding that they are considered legal game that require no licence or permit. As for where they can be exterminated, well, that's a different story. but I'm pretty well sure that a residential backyard is off-limits for any kind of BB gun + discharge in the state of NJ. Therefore it appears that the rather loud .177 is a non-option for me in spite of the legality/illegality of pigeon protection. I would need something no louder than a BB gun.
  11. Could you be a bit more vague?? ; ) Btw, I don't think that a pellet gun is going to be any more effective than steel bb's. Pigeons are HUGE! I want to drop the bird at the site, not just use it for target practice.
  12. Over the past several years I've witnessed a few stray pigeons turn into a extremely large flock of pigeons. I'd like to reverse that trend. Does anyone have any advice as to how to accomplish this within a fenced-in residential setting? I know that the Red Ryder bb gun won't do it - except with a perfectly placed head-shot, which is a low-percentage proposition since these darned pigeons bounce their heads around too unpredictably. Therefore a deadly/debilitating body-blow is the best option. A slingshot maybe? If so, any suggestions on a brand/model? Small inexpensive bow? Any other suggestions (other than poison or a claymore) I'm looking at a range of about 30 feet (+/-). And I'm not looking to maim and injure (which would result in a slow death). I want a one shot one kill(*) method.... within a fenced-in residential setting - so a "quiet" method is a must (which eliminates the AR, unfortunately : P ). Any helpful advice would be greatly appreciated. (*) If not an instant/quick kill, then at least a heavily debilitating blow that would allow me to finish it off at the site where it was impacted. In other words: no chance of "flying away" once hit.
  13. Buy a Glock. Take it completely apart. Put it back together again. Save BIG $ while getting the satisfaction of 'building' your own
  14. Imagine a league where your team would have gone 12 - 3 this week. (your team did outscore 12 other teams, right?) And yet your team is saddled with a loss, while so many other lower-scoring teams get an undeserved win based on nothing more than an arbitrary schedule. Just sayin.
  15. Why don't you back-off with your "this is ridiculous" nonsense (and don't lean on your disingenuous tack-on "smiley" as an excuse to say something you meant but don't want to have to get called on it). First of all, I can choose to spend (or not spend) $20 as I see fit. So that is none of your business. Secondly, a "fun" league is FREE. Lastly, a 15 team league (or actually anything more than a 12 team league) is NOT "FUN" AT ALL in my opinion. I simply don't want to participate in a league of this size. PERIOD. That somehow makes me ridiculous? Give me a flippin break.
  16. Nope, $20 is not a lot of money. So if you think that all of these teams makes the league more "interesting", well... that's fine. I just happen to think that it makes the league a total waste of time and money. And it doesn't interest me in the least. Attn C'mish: my PayPal info was sent via PM.
  17. Btw, Krdshrk.... can't help but notice that your team is the only one that DOESN'T have a BYE week on it's schedule. But not anymore. Because at this point I'd be happy to reduce the league's excessive number of teams by requesting a refund and the deletion of my team from the league. Thanks. (although actually I'm not "requesting" anything. I want out. Period. You should have stopped at 12 teams like everyone kept asking you to do. Bad job bro)
  18. I just obtained a new client, and the scope and scale of his project is extensive. Therefore I can't spend much time here trying to recruit teams to join. So without any additional interest here, this league idea will likely just fade out. Sorry. I was hoping to offer an alternative, but it looks like we're stuck with the moronic 15+ team league after all.
  19. In case you (or anyone else) is interested... http://njgunforums.c...rs/#entry905269
  20. I had mentioned that I might create an alternative Fantasy Football league, and I have now done so. The name of the league is called GUNSLINGERS. There are 2 options available to us, although I should also mention that there is a 3rd supplemental option that can be used along with one of those other two options, as I'm about to explain. I realize that this all sounds very cryptic, so I'll elaborate. We can go one of 2 ways in regard to which service to use: 1) ESPN 2) Yahoo Here are further details on that: The ESPN option is a Head-to-Head league. We're all familiar with that type of league. It's the same system that most fantasy leagues use (including the current NJGF Fantasy league). It uses arbitrary schedules created by a computer to pit each team against another team in the league. The Yahoo option offers a different style. That style is a "Points Only" style league. That style does away with head-to-head matchups (aka: arbitrary schedules) , and it instead rewards teams for their ability and consistency to score points (which is ultimately the objective of fantasy football: SCORE AS MANY POINTS AS POSSIBLE). This is how Yahoo describes it: Points Only In a "Points Only" League, scoring is cumulative over the course of the entire season. Each player in your team's starting lineup earns points based on their performance in each of several stat categories. The points they score are added to your daily point total, and the team with the highest total at the end of the year wins its league championship. That eliminates the instances where your team may be the second highest scoring team in a given week, but your team just happened to play the team that scored the #1 highest number of points during that same week. Therefore your team would get an "L" in a head-to-head style league, while other teams who scored less (sometime far less) than your team would get a "W" for defeating a team that also scored less than your team scored. The reality of that is that your team would have defeated BOTH of those teams (or all but 1 team), and yet your team earns an "L" during that week, while lower scoring teams are credited with a "W". (sound fair?) That is ultimately not the objective of every team that plays fantasy football. The objective of fantasy football is to score as many points as possible PERIOD. Ambiguous schedule matchups should not derail that objective. After all, which teams go into any head-to-head matchup saying that they will only score X number of points in order to defeat their particular opponent that week? The answer to that is: NO team does that! Because EVERY team is trying to score as many points as possible every single week. It's never about your opponent... it's always about your own team and it's ability to score points. Therefore it's POINTS that are the objective of every team, and not some arbitrary head-to-head matchup created by a computer. Anyway, that is why the head-to-head style is flawed when it comes to fantasy football. Anyway, only Yahoo offered the "Points Only" (aka: High Score) option. ESPN does not. (at least not in their free league). So what's the 3rd supplemental option? The 3rd option is a creation of my own making (if it exists anywhere else, I've not been made aware of it), and I've been using this style for my own fantasy league since 2006. I call it ULTIMATE Fantasy Football, and it works like this: We use a Fantasy Football service (like Yahoo, ESPN, etc) to provide our 'live scoring' data, and 'player info', and 'roster lineups', and 'waiver wire transactions', etc. But the standings from those services are not used. Instead I have coded/created a program of my own design that calculates the "high to low" scores of each team each week. It calculates how many "wins" each team would have accumulated if their team would have played against every other team in the league that week. (in other words, each team is playing head-to-head against each and every team in the league... every week of the season) So using a 10 team league as an example... the team that scored the highest score that week would be credited with 9 Wins (9-0 for the week), since their score would have defeated all of the other 9 teams in the league On the other end of the spectrum, the team that scored the lowest score that week would have defeated 0 teams, and therefor that team would be credited with 0 wins for that week (0-9). The rest of the teams would be credited with 8-1, 7-2, 6-3 (etc) records for that week, depending upon how many teams they would have defeated that week. We then add every team's win totals from week to week to create the cumulative standings in the league. Here is a sample from my league last season - and this is what I would provide as a supplemental website to whatever fantasy service (Yahoo/ESPN) that we choose to use to provide the desired services for our league. http://www.thebusinessofdata.com/tuff13/TUFF.asp (I'll be happy to describe what it all means. Just ask) I've obviously dumped a lot of info here, so I'd be happy to answer any questions that anyone might have. And btw, I foresee 10 teams (even if I have to import some of my own league's team owners to fill unfilled slots for this season), and I also envision an entry fee of $10 for this season (just until we get everyone acclimated and comfortable with the system). After all, some of us are already in multiple leagues by now - including the NJGF League - so it's probably best to make this as easy and painless as possible right now. I'll further explain playoffs and payouts as well. And just so you know, I take ZERO dollars from my leagues. I do all of this strictly for the opportunity to compete in a fair and equitable system. After all, fantasy football can be based on luck.... but I prefer to skew it towards consistency and skill. And every team owner that has played in my leagues has become a much better fantasy player because they have learned how to SCORE, as opposed to how to win lucky. Sorry for the lengthy intro, but this is not your typical style of fantasy league, so there is a lot of info to pass along in the beginning. If anyone is interested (or curious and/or has questions) let me know. I have already set up Yahoo and ESPN leagues for GUNSLINGERS, so all we need to do is get enough players (teams), and decide on a draft day/time, and whether the entry fee should be $10 or.... ?? If you've read this far, thanks for hanging with me : )
  21. Where it's pinned means nothing..... as long as the LEO who develops a curiosity about your otherwise collapsable stock comes to the conclusion that your stock is not collapsable and therefore complies with NJ State Law. That's the only thing that matters. The more hidden it is, the more scrutiny your rifle gets. So who cares if anyone can see the edge of a little 1/8 pin or not. These are rifles, not poodles in dog shows.
  22. Same as last year for me too. XBONES. 3rd place last season. Just check your PayPal account. There are unlikely to be any duplicate payments there, and only paying teams should have been given access to join.
  23. Good morning my little sunshine! And how was your nap? Although seriously.... Good grief bro!!! The perimeter has been breached and we've been over-run!!!! Countdown to 16 in..... 3...2....
