  1. Just got back from my Pa. summer house with four factory fresh one pound jugs of Bullseye. It was actually available from two vendors!! Cost me $25.00 per pound including tax; will be willing to part with two of them if you will drive to Scotch Plains for pickup. No mailing, cash money at pickup. PM me if interested. I will be back there in about two weeks and could pick up more (if still available) as I expect these two will not last long. D
  2. Got the car back, will be there. Looking forward to meeting all.
  3. Hey, all, Car is in the shop for a starter; supposed to be ready early am tomorrow. I will be there tomorrow night also. Dave
  4. Hey, Joe Guns, WELCOME!! Just a note to all, took John Fox up on his invite to shoot at Lake Island Club in Carteret. Had a good time and I will be putting in my application there for membership. Looks like a great deal! Also met a couple of nice guys there, also newbies; a father and son from Scotch Plains. Really great stuff when you can be involved in a activity with your teen age son!!!! GOOD FOR YOU, DAD!!!!!!
  5. HeyJohn, Just a quick thanks for guesting me at Lake Island. Nice facility, even though a bit old, and seems like a nice bunch of guys. I will be completing my application for admission and will get it to you. 10 miles and 22 minutes door to door from my home in Scotch Plains. Dave
  6. Thanks to all; you convinced me to wait until they swat those R-51 bugs. I just got back from Precision Firearms in Edison (home of the $35.00 FFL transfer!!!) with my new, very gently used, Kahr CW-9. I found it on Gunbroker for $275.00 and looks great. The Kahr came through with a 7 round mag and I bought a new 8 round Kahr mag which I seem to be having a problem with when loading all 8 rounds. When I push the last (8th) round in the mag, the 7th seems to have the nose tip down and jam up. Inserting the mag into the gun and racking it chambers the first round but the next with the tipped down nose gets wedged in. Anyone have any experience with this issue?
  7. Hey there Westfield Law, my new best friend (especially, if you guest me at OBRPC!!!) Thanks. I did look into Old Bridge but it was a bit more $$$ than I wanted to give up with the bond. I shoot regularly at Heritage Easton, 45 minutes door to door. All us "local boys" keep hinting about getting together for a social meet one of these days! Looks like quite a few guys around this area.
  8. Hey Glenn, apparently, my last reply got lost. Dan Boslet is in Edison just off Route 1 and Old Post Road. Just picked up my new Ruger Match Champion there Thursday. ($35.00 for an FFL transfer INCLUDING NCIC check!!!) PrecisionFirearms.com Was at the range Monday morning and the new baby shoots great!!!
  9. WOW!! You guys are all the best! I am sitting here reading and visualizing this little bitty slug followed by a BIG RED FLASH. A while back I was at the range and the guy next to me was shooting what sounded and felt like a cannon!! It actually almost physically hurt to be right next to him when he fired, so I would time my vollies to alternate with his. This was actually the first time I actually stopped and watched what was going on; as he fired I could see the muzzle jump; the ENORMOUS flash at the end of the barrel, the slight blowback around the cylindar and then, obviously feel/hear the report. (I believe it was a 52 cal Smith & Wesson?) When you talk about the bullet being in motion before all the powder has ignited and possibly being out the muzzle before combustion is complete it really brings all that home. I also have had one more really great realization about powder burn rate. Also, the horizontal positioning of the charge and primer "blowby" is also something that I never would have even thought about if I didn't read about it here. Thanks to all for their responses, I will continue to monitor this thread and watch for other great responses. As far as , "..the new baby getting factory ammo"; I always like a benchmark; I have a S&W 586 in 6" bbl that reacts completely differently from the 4" bbl 586 that I have rented and fired with white box range ammo you are usually required to buy when renting. I would like to know how the new gun will react/feel with "vanilla" ammo before I drop in a few of my own reloads some probably a bit hotter and some a bit colder. Besides,.......how else do I get cases to reload!! Hey SOF, I will probably be there until around 10:30, would be great to meet you; I've probably seen you there before. Again, thanks to all.
  10. A question for the old timers and experts: I have been reloading successfully (still have all 11 fingers) for about two years now and have purchased, and read many books, topics, and on line articles on the subject. I actually think I am really getting the hang of it. Currently, I only reload 38 specials, 357 magnums, and 9 mm. I shoot and reload around 400 rounds each month and it really is all starting to make sense to me. I reload very cautiously with a single stage press, inspecting each and all cases after cleaning, priming, and charging before placing the projectile in the case. I have always noticed that in some loads there is a gap, sometimes sizeable, between the top of the powder charge and the back of the bullet (most apparent in some 38 special and 357 mag loads) and in others (9mm) the back of the bullet appears to seat right against, or even sometimes appear to be compressing the powder charge. All reloading data is very specific about, cartridge overall length, charge weight, bullet weight (even specific brands), and expected pressure inside the cases, taking it to the extreme of sometimes discussing even different barrel lengths and even make and models. Lets not even get started with crimping and it's impact!!!! My question is, ...is there a specific or approximate relationship to both (powder top and bullet back) and how does that gap change the dynamics of the load. I respect load data tables and would never alter charges based on visual observations, but this scenario just never quite made sense to me. Is there an optimum relationship or does it not make a difference? As an aside, I am relatively new to NJGF but am loving it and think it is a veritable treasure chest of good info on many matters. It is really great to have a local source of good info and expertise. (what is new and great in Montana is not necessarily useful to Garden State residents!!) On a recommendation from a post I started looking at Ruger GP 100's as my next purchase and was lucky enough to bring home a Match Champion today. ...You KNOW I will be at Heritage, Easton Monday morning at 9:00 AM!!!! (the new baby will get new factory ammo, ....to start!!!) THANKS TO ALL
  11. Hey Glenn, and all, Just heard from a dealer in Seattle that he just shipped my brand new Ruger GP 100 357 mag Match Champion!!!! I was bidding them on gunbroker and managed to get this one for $699.00 plus $25.00 shipping. Now all I need is my P2P's to come through from the town!! I am using a new FFL dealer in Edison, Precision Firearms who has a really good price on transfers. ($35.00) He also does Cerakoting and Durakoting from a shop he has set up in his garage. I was over ther to see it last week, pretty impressive results on the Cerakoting.
  12. Hey guys; I found this link to a page that covers solving some problems encountered in casting lead bullets. I am sure that most of the old "MASTER CASTERS" know all this stuff but as a newbie to casting, I found it useful. Have a look and let me know what you think. Sam (..and, yes, that is my actual picture, ......you can see it on the wall in the Post Office) http://www.gunweek.com/2004/feature1201.html
  13. Barron's Drug/Gift store in Westfield is a UPS shipping facility that will accept loaded ammo for mailing. As covered above, the ORM-D label must be on the outside. Last time I shipped some odd shotgun shells the clerk noticed the ORM-D sticker which says right on it "small arms cartridges" and asked if that is what was in the package. I honestly replied, yes, and that was it. I have shipped a full case of 38 special wad cutters through them also. I did re-package the Federal case box into another unmarked box and put the ORM-D sticker on the outside. The UPS store locations have informed me that it is a "corporate" decision that prevents them from shipping ammo. (insurance/ignorance/pink underwear?) Barrons also has the municipal lot right behind them with a rear entrance so it is real easy. I have shipped long guns from the Post Office and was questioned once as to what was in the package; I replied "sporting goods" and expected the "..what kind" reply to which I would have said golf clubs, but it never went that far. After that, I found it easier to "break them down" which makes the packaging much shorter and less suspicious to inquiring/ignorant minds.
  14. I don't intend to carry it as I am not lawman and no cc permit. I am looking for a compact / subcompact 9mm single stack and have rented quite a few both at RTSP and Heritage Easton. Allo seem to be ......"..lightweight?" polymer frames, I guess. Big hands, also; ...cheapskate, also; this Rem with the aluminum frame seemed to sound good wth a good price. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. I already have a Beretta M9 that I love.
  15. I guess by now that quite a few shooters are aware of Remington's remake of the model 51. There are quite a few videos out there and plenty of blogs and reports. Does anyone have any idea when they will actually be available to buy? How about recommended sources to buy / pre-order / order?
  16. I laminated mine when I moved to NJ 29 years ago. It is in such good condition that I made two REALLY GOOD copies (both sides with good alignment) that I keep one of in each of my vehicles. Occasionally when I see a great ammo deal and they want the ID, I just go out to whichever vehicle I happen to be in and get it. It has never failed me yet. I do use the original for P2p's and actual purchases of handguns. Anyone have any thoughts on the ..."technicalities" of doing this?
  17. Welcome from another newbie in Scotch Plains.
  18. Welcome from another newbie in Scotch Plains. Looks like most of us "local boys" shoot at Heritage Easton. RTSP does have a really nice facility and a large rental inventory.
  19. Hey there bcarlos, ...thanks for the welcome. One of these days we have to find out who else is local and get together for a ..."couple of cold carbonated refreshments" and shoot the breeze ....( .... little gun forum joke, there,...)
  20. Glen, you were right; I checked out that Central Jersey Rifle Club and WOW!!! The annual dues are a little heavy but they do have what appears to be an extensive facility. They really bang the new members with that capitalization fee!! DOUBLE WOW!! Does anyone know if you ever get that money back, or is that a "donation" to the range? I guess I will stick to Heritage Easton for now, and, yes I would like to check out EFGA when the weather improves a bit. I will PM you at some point in the futuer and appreciate the other invite from "back on target" . I was up at RTSP in Randolph yesterday. They have a very nice facility up there and I rented a subcompact 9mm Shield S&W. I own a High Standard HD Military 22 semi auto that my dad bought some 50 years ago down in Virginia. It really shoots great and obviously has a lot of sentimental value to me. Two years ago when I retired I started buying handguns and shooting regularly again. First purchase was a Colt 38 special Army revolver that I wound up returning as it was damaged. (goodbye, handgun purchase permit!) I then bought a used 38 special Rossi model 851 revolver ( stainless with 4" bbl) that shoots really nicely. Next up was a S&W 357 mag model 586 revolver (blued with a 6" bbl) that is really great. Last purchase was a Beretta 92M 9mm semi auto that I am loving more every day. I really got used to the revolvers so the Beretta had a learning curve for me. Am currently awaiting two additional purchase permits (someday my prince and my permits will come!) and am thinking about the Kahr CW9 (subcompact 9mm 3.5" bbl); very similar to the S&W Shield.(but about $200.00 less in cost) I have started casting some bullets and reload my own 9mm and 38/357 so I am able to shoot a few hundred rounds each time I go out to the range without breaking the bank. How about you? What do you punch paper holes with?
  21. Hey B.O.T., (AND ALL) Thanks for the welcome! That EFGA sounds like a winner for me. I belong to a similar outdoor rangr in Portage Pa. where my summer home is and I love it there. I will look into joining.
  22. Hello to all and glad to be here. I moved here from NY 30 years ago and although I was always involved in outdoor sports and shooting, I really did not get back into it until I retired two years ago. Since then I have acquired a few handguns, shoot regularly at Heritage guild Easton where I am a member and now cast my own boolits and reload my own 9mm, 38 specials and 357 mags. I have been up to RTSP in Randolph a few times and I am looking for an indoor range a little closer to home in Scotch Plains. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, and have a great New Year.
