  1. Best chance to get a CCW in NJ is to become a judge or sleep with a judge or somehow ingratiate yourself with one of the corrupt political machine heavy-hitters in the state. The latter takes years of building trust (aka significant campaign contributions). Of course, you can carry on your premises, though I'd check with a lawyer if that covers you in a tenants residence or place of business. And there's the thorny issue of moving from place to place. Unless you keep a gun in each location, you'd have to unload and case the gun for transport, which is essentially walking unarmed with a present for the super-predators.
  2. Lately I buy all my ammo online. Most online retailers will want a copy of your FID card. Some will require that the address on the FID card match the shipping address and some (SGAmmo comes to mind), don't ask for anything.
  3. OK, I'll close the loop on the thread I started. Just completed a transaction with Joe at J&J Gunworks. Bottom line: highly recommended! Nice guy, super friendly. He was responsive by phone or email as I waited out my P2Ps and planned my purchases. He was able to get my first choice (FNX-45 tactical FDE) with a couple of days and his prices were competitive with anyone else I checked. Will definitely be a repeat customer.
  4. I mentioned earlier (perhaps in another thread), the chiefs change often it seems lately. I got my P2Ps and new FID today, 6 1/2 weeks after first applying. Nothing had to be notorized. Reference letters were sent out within a day of my application. Captain of the Firearms Unit returned my calls promptly. I can't complain about CHPD at all. Years ago, I knew a lot of guys on the force. Some were gun enthusiasts, some not. I think with many departments, it comes down to the individuals or chief's own views, unfortunately. Shouldn't be that way, but you now the saying, "All politics is local". Might be time for me to stock up before the next regime change has someone who'll slow-walk the process. Oh, and after waiting all that time and jumping through all those hoops, my NICS "instant" background check took 3 hours.
  5. I found it on their website: "If you wish to check on the status of your application, please call the Firearms Unit at 856-432-8792."
  6. <iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/UqpjWnQjC5s" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Just trying to understand the motives of people who post these videos. Ostensibly, they're just out exercising their legal right to Open Carry (where allowed), but so many of them look like they're begging for a confrontation - trying to be in-your-face about it with establishments and cops. To what end? To get internet fame? Perhaps sue someone? I wonder if some aren't created by anti-Open Carry people looking to "raise awareness". I think the bulk of the public shock over seeing people openly carry is due to an unawareness of a given state's Open Carry laws and may only serve to further galvanize the anti 2A crowd against gun ownership. 7. OK, update on this...got a call back (within a 3 hours of leaving a message). Captain of the unit apologized for the delay, said the unit was inundated after the San Bernardino shooting, but he said everything was done/cleared and that I'd have the new FID and permits next week. Considering the horror stories I read hear about delays and additional hoops in other towns, I have to say that 6 weeks wasn't awful (keeping in mind that I applied for the 212A background check two months earlier). One important note, going back to the OP - NONE OF THE FORMS HAD TO BE NOTORIZED.
  8. That's strange - I filed all my paperwork (change of address/3 permits) with Cherry Hill PD back in February and there was no mention of anything having to be notorized. Of course, I've heard squat from them, so maybe that's something you only find out after you call for status. My original FID and permits were issued by CHPD as well. My references and (sigh) spouse all send their forms back the day they got them (surprisingly 1 or 2 days after I filed the paperwork). The town has changed chiefs a few times lately, so maybe they've made some changes? Also, I applied to the NJSP website for the background check back in December (2015) and gave the confirmation number to the clerk when I dropped off the paperwork. I did call the head of the firearms unit today for a status and left a voicemail. Waiting for a callback.
  9. Yeah, all things being equal about timing, I'd go local, even if it cost a little more. The situation I want to avoid is paying and placing an order to the distributor/manufacturer through the dealer and being told the thing is back-ordered X weeks or indefinitely, while knowing an online vendor has 12 in stock.
  10. As if. LOL. The worst April Fool's joke ever.
  11. Hey all. The last time I bought handguns, the internet was in it's infancy. You learned about new handguns from magazines and catalogues and you had to shop around different dealers for stock or have them order something for out of stock items. Fast forward to 2016 and everything imaginable is available online, including in-stock inventory. I imagine a good part of any FFL's business is transfers. So let me ask you this - if I'm looking for a particular model that is not in stock locally, is there any advantage to having the shop order directly from the manufacturer vs. buying from a big online site and just doing a transfer? I checked with two LGS authorized dealers and was told they didn't have the gun in stock but could get the model I was looking for in a week or so, but would have to be paid in full at time of order. The online dealers have multiple quantities in stock, and obviously would require full payment before shipping to the FFL. Either way, I'm kinda buying sight-unseen, which is OK given the circumstances. So is it six-of-one, half-dozen of another? I would like to support the local guys as much as possible (I image they make more on a direct sale with markup than with a transfer). Just curious if there's any advantage one way or the other? Thanks.
  12. The other argument is just, well, to send a message - add one more to the list of CCW holders in Utah and the other 30 states. Imagine if every handgun owner went through the process, what a boon that would be to Utah's revenue. As will likely happen with medicinal then recreational pot, once the sloths that are state legislators see the dollars they can spread around, their high-moral standards may be exposed for what they really are.
  13. Thanks for the feedback. Didn't mean to imply anything untoward about the business model. In this day of just-in-time inventory and even Amazon's same-day delivery, I realize a retailer's stock can be more virtual than physical. Good to know of positive first-hand dealings and I wish any FFL or LGS success trying to scrape out a living in this god-forsaken state. I will definitely make contact with them. I've got a short list of guns to purchase. Just waiting for the P2Ps to get issued. Hopefully that'll happen before all handguns need to be "smart".
  14. I respect that you want to teach your kid the right thing. I shot CO2 guns in my mom's basement as a kid and my kids shot them in my basement. Never occurred to me to ask anyone's permission, but these are different times, I suppose. The culture has become "Before you do anything new or different, check with the authorities to see if you are allowed". This applies to: Throwing a frisbee on a beach (not allowed) Smoking outdoors in an public park (not allowed) Flying a toy drone or launching a model rocket (not allowed) Playing fetch with your unleashed dog (not allowed) Riding a bicycle or a motorcycle without a helmet (not allowed) Installing a toilet with a 5-gal flush (not allowed) Where does it end?
  15. While waiting for my P2Ps, I was scouring the landscape to check out the LGS situation in South Jersey and came upon J&J Gunworks in Clementon. Looking at the website, they seem to have an implausible number of handguns in stock. I looked them up before taking a possibly disappointing ride over there and found out the address is that of J&J Auto Repair (same phone number and address). I'm guessing they're expanding their business model, which is fine. Just curious if anyone has experience with them. Thanks.
  16. Specifically on the 15-round limit, I don't quite get Bud's position on that - they won't even remove the 17-round mags (the illegal part) and sell you a legal gun or swap a 17 for a 15 (if one exists). Many manufacturers don't do what Beretta does (sell a 10-round, least-common-denomenator mag-equipped gun under a separate SKU). Besides, it's not illegal for the receiving FFL to have an over-the-limit mag, right? If you've got an FFL that'll receive and modify a mag for sale to a non-LEO, what's the problem? Yeah, I get it, Bud's can make their own policy and they probably aren't losing sleep over a blanket policy that loses them some business in little ol' NJ.
  17. Thanks for the reply and I appreciate the color coding - very cool. Point taken on the FPID card name. Don't know why I had FOID on my mind - and yes, it's an important distinction. I find those reference letters really offensive. Since my references are both gun owners and know the process, I didn't feel as much a victim of the state-sponsored attempt at shaming this go round. I would have drawn the line if the forms had to be notorized (they didn't). At some point, some municipality is probably going to want to get your neighbor's approval (if somewhere they aren't already). The spouse notification I suspected was over-the-top, but went along with it because (a) I knew my wife would laugh and sign the form and (b) didn't want a one to three month wait to turn into a legal battle and take a year. Sorry if that means I've been co-opted. Maybe once I have my P2Ps in hand, I'll raise a stink.
  18. I recently applied for a FOID FPID change of address (same town as originally issued) and another 3 P2Ps with Cherry Hill PD. They have a convenient "firearms packet" online. Actually does a fairly good job laying out the procedure for first time vs. existing FOID holders. The usual stuff is there, the SBI-212A (Criminal Background Check) order link, STS-033 FOID FPID application form, SP-66 (Mental Health consent form) and they have one local form, CHPD Next of Kin (#288) form. I completed everything and my two references and spouse received their reference letters in the US Mail within 1 to 2 days. Confirmed with everyone that they were mailed back within a day, and now just waiting...and waiting... I think it's funny that, being a gun-owner and FOID FPID holder (albeit with the wrong address), they asked my wife if she had any objection. Wonder what the process is should some spouse answer "Yes - I object" and there are already guns in the home? Maybe they send someone around to chat. Oh they did have one other form available (SP-650) which is a "Voluntary Firearm Registration" form. I clicked on the link just to see what it was, but the link was broken. Oh well...
  19. Thanks for the welcomes. Yeah, I don't mind a ride and would like to support the local gun shops or FFLs. I moved several years ago (within the same town where my FOID was first issued), so I had to complete a change of address application. Noticed the ST-033 form has been updated -- Yay, you can apply for a "Change of sex" application too...[sigh]. NJ Legislators must have exhausted themselves holding hearings on that one.
  20. Hey all, Longtime gun owner, transplanted from PA many years ago. Used to shoot at Crossroads in Pennsauken (tells you how long it's been). Looking for recommendations for gun shops and ranges in the South Jersey area. Mostly shooting handguns, though I might pick up a long gun before it's too late to.
