The person handing out the approved permits at the Middlesex courthouse said to keep the original order with the permit while carrying even thought the order itself  says to keep a copy of the order with the permit.

So, according to the Judge’s written pronouncement a copy of the order is enough to keep with the permit while carrying, but if you got your permit from the Middlesex court is there any possible reason why you would want to get into a legal battle with a police officer, prosecutor, judge or jury on that issue?

The order expires in two years anyways, so why not keep the original with the permit?

It wouldn't necessarily hurt having the original court order and as you mentioned, it's only good for 2 years. However, I do find it interesting that the person handing out the permit is giving information that is counter to what the actual court order states. For me (just my opinion), I'm going to carry a copy of the court order as I can show explicitly from the order that a copy is sufficient. With my luck, if I carried the original order, it would find it's way into the washer / dryer which is too painful to even imagine. lol

My permit (Morris County) has the "See court order" box checked, as well. The court order only has the handgun info listed (make, model, caliber, and serial number), and that i must carry "this ORDER" at all times. I also carry a printout of the NJSP statement that Critical Defense/Critical Duty, etc. is not considered hollow point ammunition (just to avoid any confusion or questions). I ordered a bifold Minimalist Wallet Double ID Holder from ...amazon...to put it all in and it fits well. I do have the permit and court order screenshots on my phone, as well, but figured giving an officer the physical paper is better proof of authenticity, won't create a distracting glow in his/her face if reading in low light (hopefully making them feel safer), and worst case, keeps my phone handy in case I need to make a call for counsel, if further clarification is needed. I think the last thing any LEO wants to do in bright sun or low light is try to enlarge/scroll a phone screen while maintaining peripheral situational awareness. I think (just my worthless two cents) our job as responsible citizens is to help make them as comfortable when dealing with us as possible, since this is nee to them too, at least in NJ. I'll try to attach the wallet screenshots below.

Appreciate the reply and good point on handing over one's phone. It's convenient to have the docs stored electronically but you're in a predicament if you actually need it to record the conversation or need to call. The permit itself isn't the most convenient size to have in your wallet so not a bad idea to have a separate bill-fold to carry the permit and the court order.

what was your timeline submitting?  I too am waiting for Monmouth court judge ok

    Abbreviated timeline:

8/1 - Submitted paperwork to local PD.

8/29 - PD indicated no issues from references and application will be submitted to prosecutors.

9/27 - Received letter from Monmouth County prosecutor that 'applicant appears to be in compliance with all requirements...' and application sent to Judge.

10/17 - Court order approving application.

  4. Just received a copy of the court order granting my permit (Monmouth County, expiration Oct 2024) stating to pick up at my local PD. The court order specifically identifies the 2 handguns I qualified along with the 'typical sensitive areas', e.g. schools, gov buildings, polling places, etc, where it's not allowed.

Interestingly, the court order states I have to carry a copy of the court order along with the permit. I presume having a pdf copy or pics of the court order on your phone should suffice (assuming you have your phone while carrying)? Have others had this stipulation on their court order?

    Hi Kimberly,

My application has been with the court since July.

Can I get an update please, thanks.

    Congrats!

I am in Monmouth County.  My money order was cashed as of today.  Could have been cashed over the last week or so as I don't check daily.   My fingerprints were done on 7/22.  Application went in about a week prior...

Has anyone else in Monmouth County seen movement with judiciary, apart from the person who received on appeal?

I'm in Monmouth County and in a similar situation. The PD submitted my packet to the Court on 8/29 and my money order cashed this week but haven't heard anything.

Anyone hear of any permit being issued in Monmouth County? My paperwork, fingerprints and reference letters have been returned but I don't believe they have been forwarded to the court. My local PD said they were overwhelmed with applicants and hadn't forwarded any since I spoke to them a weeks ago.

I'd like to know as well; only info I've heard is just rumor that the judge for Monmouth County wasn't approving any permits due to no clear guidelines on weapons qualification (again, just rumor). I turned in my packet on 8/8 and all references contacted as of 8/25. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Who if anyone has used a relative as a reference? I cant find anything that says you can't , My local PD doesn't seem to want to respond to the question

I used relatives for all three references (wife and 2 brother-in-laws); the Boro PD sergeant contacted all three and didn't seem to have any issues with them as references. I also list relatives as references for the pistol permits so I presume there should be no issue for PTC.

  9. That's correct ... I can't see the pin but there is a noticeable hole.

I'm assuming the pin is not in the bore.

I don't know what would happen if the pin is in the bore. I'm assuming something bad would happen.

  10. The dealer said he'll ask the gunsmith to take a look at the pinning to ensure the pin doesn't protrude through the barrel and there's no burrs left by the hole.  Admittedly, I'm somewhat bummed this happened.

I doubt it would affect accuracy since (as another member pointed out) the barrel would have a hole for the gas.

This would be a mistake i doubt they wanted to penetrate the barrel but mistakes can happen. They might not even know.

What did the dealer say when you asked him?

The wood on that gun is beautiful.

If the pin should move, I presume the pin would blow out of the muzzle brake from the gas pressure and hopefully not into the barrel.  Again, I'm no gunsmith so I could have this all wrong.

Thanks again for everyone's thoughts and insights!

Just hope the pin doesn't eventually dislodge and slide through and lodge itself like a rod blocking the muzzle. I'd send it back. If he messed up that bad and he didn't use a tight roll pin and proper weld, well, boom.

  11. Thanks to everyone who responded ... I'm somewhat conflicted on this pinning technique since I haven't encountered it before.  I agree that mistakes can happen.  If this technique is acceptable practice, I don't want to make waves and slander a vendor unnecessarily (especially since I just joined the forum).  However, I do get the sense that this technique is not the norm so I plan on going back to the FFL / gunsmith and ask about the pinning.

  12. True. I have no idea whether or not the hole would affect accuracy since I haven't shot it. As I mentioned, I'm not sure if it would affect the function or accuracy.  My question was whether or not this method of pinning was ok.  Based on the response thus far, I presume the preferred method is to drill into but not through the barrel.

If you haven't shot it prior, how would you know if the accuracy was compromised?

  13. Thanks Ian ... I wasn't sure if the hole that cut through the rifling would affect the function or accuracy.  Admittedly, I haven't shot the rifle yet to confirm. Just wasn't sure if it would be ok to shoot.

    First, beautiful wood.

You are right and they should not have drilled more than a dimple to install the pin. If you are concerned how the rifle will work, the hole will not affect the function at all. Remember that there is another open hole drilled for the gas port.

  14. Hello everyone,

New member to the forum and I hope this is the correct place to post this question.  Apologies in advance for the long post.

I recently purchased a VEPR (see attached pic) and had a local NJ FFL / gunsmith pin the muzzle brake to the barrel.  After inspecting the rifle, I noticed there is a hole drilled through the barrel wall into the bore where the barrel is pinned. The pin doesn't protrude into the barrel but there is a noticeable hole inside the barrel.  The FFL indicated that this shouldn't affect the firearm but I'm not so sure.  I've had barrels pinned from other gunsmiths and the drilling only went into the barrel and not through the barrel into the bore.

Admittedly, I'm no gunsmith so I'm looking to the collective wisdom of the forum on whether this type of pinning is ok.

    Thanks!
