  1. Non resident FID is useful if you want to buy handgun ammo, buy long guns, and want to be able to legally possess long guns without using an exemption per NJSA 2c:39-6. AFAIK leaving your guns in a self storage unit is a no go, especially the handguns, as you would be out of exemption simply going there with them. Out of exemption = illegal possession of a handgun. Gunsitters.com is an option (they have a location in Whippany), but as others have said, upcoming NJ gun laws will likely make your guns and magazines illegal pretty soon anyway. Their Easton, PA location would be a better bet for long term storage in a free state.
  2. Initially I was with the NRA on this one, where I had no problem sacrificing bump stocks for right to carry, but I'm 100% the other way now. Bump stocks conform to the law as it is currently written, and we shouldn't have unnamed and unaccountable bureaucrats making what amounts to law. It should scare the living daylights out of us all that there's talk about max cycle rates, and making firing too quickly a felony. Also, if we give them bump stocks, it won't end there. Thanks for posting this. I'll be giving my polite-yet-stern two cents to the BATFE.
  3. As I read the law, the vagueness of the law was the issue here. Bump stocks were only illegal if you possessed a semi-auto rifle with a detachable magazine and had two offending features, per the 1996 AG guidelines. This probably covered almost every AR owner in the state, but if your AR was fixed mag, or somehow only had one offending feature (the bump stock as the offending feature in this case), a bump stock was permitted. You could also posses a bump stock itself if you didn’t own a rifle for it to go onto. Now, you can’t.
  4. If you ban it, they will come (and find a clever way around it)!
  5. I'm not saying that the strategy is wrong or won't work, but I have my doubts that SCOTUS will ever bail us out. They didn't hear the latest MD AWB appeal, so why would they bother with anything from NJ? Besides, SCOTUS is mixed at best. Gorsuch, Thomas, and Alito seemingly can be counted on, but Kennedy and Roberts could go the other way depending on the day of the week. We'd probably need to rely on the Third Circuit for a good outcome and hope it doesn't go higher than that until Trump can appoint at least one more pro 2a justice (although I'd feel better with two). Here's hoping Trump and Congress get those vacancies on the Third Circuit filled ASAP.
  6. Funny how new gun ranges keep popping up in NJ of all places. I'll have to check it out once open. It looks to be almost halfway between my house and my brother, so I could probably get him to shoot a bit more often.
  7. I haven’t been there after sundown, so I can’t attest to how good the lighting is, but it is indeed lit.
  8. I layer up with thermals and multiple sweatshirts when I go outdoor shooting in the 40s and 50s. I’m pretty sure I’d freeze to death if I went in this weather. Then there’s the whole needing to dig a hole to put up my target thing...that usually doesn’t work so well when the ground is frozen solid. lol I’m really hoping for some better temps soon...it’s either been too cold or I’ve been too sick to try out the new trigger in my AR. Need to shoot it at least once before new AWB laws make it illegal.
  9. It'll probably be difficult to find a place that does hard chrome in NJ due to the environmental issues associated with it, and even more difficult to find a place in NJ that will work on firearms. Out of state is probably your best bet. The coatings place we use at work for almost everything (anodizing, black oxide, nickel plate, etc) doesn't do chrome to my knowledge.
  10. If I remember correctly, ANJRPC's $40 non-range membership counts for the club requirement. I was thinking about a Garand a few months ago, and there were a few options for the rifle marksmanship requirement: http://thecmp.org/cmp_sales/rifle_sales/eligibility-requirements/ It doesn't seem like the pistol requirements are totally set yet, so I don't know if a hunter safety course would do the trick for the 1911s. I figured that if I took the NJ shotgun hunter safety course, along with my ANJRPC membership, that I would have been golden. To note, I didn't get a Garand through CMP yet...other priorities.
  11. Very interesting lineup...And here I was thinking about an 870 Police Magnum sometime next year. This makes that decision a bit harder.
  12. Sadly, I don't know anywhere in Monmouth County, but I use http://www.lasersourcellc.com/ at work all the time. They're in Warminster, PA. They don't do any coatings that I know of, just laser marking, etching and engraving.
  13. Under current law, wouldn't a bump stock be totally fine on a semi-auto that cannot accept a detachable magazine? Fixed magazine rifles can have all the evil features in the world, no?
  14. Can you hit targets 100 yards away without a scope? Sure can. A few weeks ago I was shooting soda cans at 100 yards at Range 14 with my AR, and my red dot has no magnifier. They're not the easiest to see on a cloudy day, but it's certainly doable.
  15. I can't wait to see the incoming Murphy regime and our state legislature go into a catatonic state.
  16. For shops, Monmouth Arms isn't too far from your area on Route 9 in Marlboro. I've gotten a couple guns from them so far, and wouldn't hesitate to go back. They don't have the biggest selection around, but their prices on guns are usually very competitive to internet pricing without the transfer fee (but you do pay tax). One bit of advice - check their hours before going. They're mostly open evenings and Saturdays. There's also Howell Gun Works, which is about 20 minutes south from Monmouth Arms (also on Route 9). They're a bit bigger of a shop and have a much larger in-stock inventory compared to Monmouth Arms. The people there tend to be very helpful and have never been pushy to me. The only downside I've found is their prices tend to be a few bucks more than Monmouth Arms, but I haven't seen anything that I'd say was a rip off...mostly fair pricing. Regarding ranges, I didn't like the vibe I got at Shore Shot when I popped my head in the last time. Maybe it was the fact that I could hear the shooting outside in the parking lot? If I go indoor, I tend to go to Garden State Shooting Center instead. With that said, I prefer outdoor, so I typically head out to Range 14 at Ft Dix. It's a bit out of date at this point, but the NJ Gun Store/Range Map isn't a bad place to start. Just make sure to check that the place is still in business before you go.
  17. I would disagree. The 14.5" barrel was pinned and welded either prior to you taking possession, or prior to you having a firearm that it can go onto. My thinking is around constructive possession, which we all know that NJ loves. I would like the MEAN device even more if it required the action to be open and required the use of a tool to insert a magazine the first time.
  18. I would tend to agree based on logic, but we're dealing with illogical lawmakers. The fact that you can insert a detachable magazine into it after the fact may be a sticking point. You could theoretically keep the rifle around without a magazine in the rifle and insert a loaded mag into it prior to shooting. Of course, if the magazine is already locked in it... We need a baseline definition of what is meant by a "fixed magazine", "detachable magazine", and "ability to accept a detachable magazine". Of course, the legislature loves keeping things vague to trap good people trying to comply with the law, so good luck with that. With that said, I might get one now anyway. It's only $25 shipped, which is way cheaper than a new non-pistol grip and new barrel/upper.
  19. The latest version of the NJ AWB I read put muzzle brakes into the evil feature list as well, so everyone will still have to get a new barrel/upper anyway with this.
  20. If not bolted to the floor or the wall behind it (preferably studs) I would agree. Anything I would get would be bolted.
  21. I guess I figure that any determined criminal with a $20 Harbor Freight grinder can get into most gun "safes" rather easily by simply popping a hole into the side. I'm more worried about the smash and grab type, which is much more likely.
  22. I definitely like their storage concept. I'm interested in the Model 52 gun cabinet since it's light weight (upstairs apartment and I hope to move soon), but I wonder if it would be better to get a cheaper security cabinet and put in a SecureIt retrofit kit? It seems a bit much for a gun cabinet, but I guess the payoff is mobility and their cradle grid system. For reference, no safe yet...just a locked closet.
  23. I picked up a Geissele super charging handle. Good price. My AR came with the MBUS sights and they’re fine, but I swapped them out for MBUS pros. I just prefer metal irons.
