  3. I just got my FID for long guns, although I don't know anything about guns or ammo. What is a good gun to get my hands on that will help me learn more but won't break the bank, at the same time being ideal at home defense?

  9. Just to be clear, the 30-day rule between purchases is for handguns only, right? And that purchase would have no effect on buying a long gun? So if I legally used one of my handgun P2Ps yesterday, I could legally buy a long gun today and tomorrow and every day between now and doomsday and I'd be legal? I just want to make sure the rule isn't 30 days between "any" gun purchases. Thanks.
  10. GAPP will be offering an AR beginners course on April 17, 2016 at Fort Dix Range 14. This course is the NRA First steps rifle course (specifically for the AR rifle platform). It is designed to introduce the new AR-15 owner to their rifle properly and safely. The classroom portion covers the history of the platform, disassembly, reassembly, cleaning, and aftermarket accessories... as well as the laws regarding rifles of this type. Several models are available to look at and will be used for demonstration in the classroom... and one can be provided for use on the range if you don't own an AR yet and just want to learn how to shoot one. After lunch, we head out to the range and zero your rifle... and see if you can hit a steel plate at 200 yards. The course length is approximately 6 hours and the cost is $180. If you're a new AR owner or if you've had one sitting in your safe for a while, come out and learn more about it. For registration info, go to http://gappnj.com/rifle/ar_beginners. The class size is limited so register soon.
  11. So bought a ruger 10/22 on thanksgiving day, about 5:30pm, and knew they would run the NICS on Friday when the state opened.... No call from DSG on Friday, which I knew might happen because the state gets over run with NICS checks because of the sales... Went to Dicks this morning to get something else, and went into the lodge to inquire about the NICS check...the lodge associate called the manager and they looked in the NJSP portal... Fail # 1- he said my check came back yesterday morning.... And they never called me... Kinda new that was gonna happen.... MAJOR FAIL- During the whole interaction today, (I did leave with my rifle) they never checked my ID to confirm who I was! I just told them my name and they gave me a gun....... They shouldn't be able to sell guns
  12. Bullpup rifles are defined as "a modern firearm configuration in which the action and magazine are located behind the trigger group and alongside the shooter's face, so there is no wasted space for the buttstock as in conventional designs." And the NJ law says "i. A semi-automatic rifle that has the ability to accept a detachable magazine and has at least two of the following: (1) A folding or telescoping stock;(2) A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon;(3) A bayonet mount;(4) A flash suppressor or threaded barrel designed to accommodate a flash suppressor; and (5) A grenade launcher; So does a bullpup's pistole grip count as one of these things. Since its pistol grip is not below the action. So you can buy any out of state tavor with only modifying the magazine and not the flash hidder.
  13. Over the last few weeks, I have decided that I would like to assemble my first AR 15 instead of purchasing one off the shelf. I have done a plethora of research, (Although, I am sure that there is a lot more that I can obtain), and have come to the conclusion that to get what I want in a rifle, assembling one would be the smarter choice. It would also give me the knowledge of how to put one together, learn as to what each part does, and just know that rifle inside and out. Mind you, I will be building the rifle at my dad`s who live in IL, so I won`t have to deal with NJ`s restrictive laws. I do visit him on a monthly basis, so it will be used, shot, and cared for. Please comment, as I am always interested as to what other have to say or any criticisms that you may have. So, here is the parts list that I have come up with that will fit my needs. Again, feel free to offer suggestions. Barreled upper receiver with free float rail - PSA 16" M4 Premium ss12G2 Chambered in 5.56 PSA AR15/M16 Charging handle Spikes Tactical Complete 5.56/.223 BCG PSA Gadsden Stripped Lower Receiver PSA AR Lower parts kit w/ MAGPUL grip and trigger guard Spikes Tactical 6-postion Mil. Spec buffer tube kit Magpul CTR Carbine Mil. Spec Stock Daniel Defense flip up front and rear sights Vortex Strikefire II Red dot sight I`ll probably get about 3 or 4 mag`s and an angled fore grip.
  14. GAPP is offering two low light courses... low light pistol on May 4 and low light long arm on May 18, both at Shooters Sporting Center in Little Egg Harbor. Low light shooting is a difficult skill to master and something everyone concerned with personal protection should be trained for. In these courses, students will learn how to use low light or no light conditions to their advantage, how to shoot from cover, different lighting options, and different hold techniques... and ofcourse live fire. For more information and registration info, go to http://gappnj.com/upcoming_courses/low_light
  15. Been looking to get into the rifle world but don't want to spend the money associated with moving to 5.56/.223 I know it is pretty cheap but .22lr is even cheaper. I want something bolt action for accuracy and to force a little more discipline on the trigger and ammo use. I like something that other people don't really have which is why for my handgun I went FNX 45 and not a 1911 or Glock. ( I am definitely getting a 1911 someday though, just too damn pretty not to get one). I have started a poll with some that I have come across that fit my criteria, albeit flexible criteria. Magazine fed Bolt action Preferably wood stock iron sights( not necessary) Good looks, let's be honest not one wants to shoot the Ford Edsel of the gun world ( cough Glock cough) Please feel free to add in some that I have over looked to add to my frustration and confusion. But it will be appreciated advice. Thanks in advance for the votes and advice.
  16. Okay... this MGI AR variant can fit in a pistol case when disassembled. In fact, that's how they're selling them and shipping them. (Allgedly they're prepping to sell parts for 15 different calibers.) Quick change barrel. Quick change mag well. Full caliber conversion in less than 3 minutes! 1) Shut up and take my money!!! 2) Besides pinning the stock... anything else needed to make this puppy NJ compliant? (Aside from barrel selection.) 3) Shut up and take my money!!! http://www.alloutdoor.com/2014/03/10/compact-hydra-ar-rifle-fits-pistol-case/
  17. I was on a platform specific site today and one of the guys posted this. I checked it out and just ordered 3 of them - http://www.gmc4x4.com/store/product/17-paracord-riffle-sling/ I know it's not for everyone b/c of the "tactical" look, but I like it and if I can help a wounded vet, you bet I'll order a few. Thought you guys might be interested!
  18. I went to Dicks today. Went to "look" at a Marlin 60 that they have on sale. Well.....I walked out with it. No will power. My first rifle since I was a kid. It appears to be well made with a beautifully looking stock. Can't wait to take it to the range. One very surprising aspect - the NICS check took about 2 minutes. I guess the long waiting periods are over !
  19. Just added the cx4 storm to my collection. yeah, its awesome ..I'm going to need a couple thousands rounds of bulk 9mm...
  20. Bought a new air rifle and I'm looking for somewhere to shoot it in South Jersey. Given that woodchucks can be hunted year round with .22 rim fire, what is the issue, if any, with me hunting woodchuck with a .177 caliber pellet rifle? Any ideas or comments are welcome!

    SKS- Where?

Hi Everybody, I am new to this forum and to gun ownership in general. I've always been interested in firearms but was scared away by New Jersey's stringent firearm laws. Finally, within this past year, i took the plunge and submitted an application for my FID. I received it a few months ago and immediately purchased a 12 gauge for trap shooting. I've been having a blast. However, I've been looking into acquiring a rifle that i can plink around on at the range. I'm very interested in purchasing an SKS. I've read that they can be had for cheap and i love the look and feel of them. I had a chance to shoot one that my coworker owns and since then i've been sold. That being said, my coworker is not a New Jersey resident. My question is... Being a New Jersey resident, how can i go about purchasing an SKS? I noticed that a great deal of them are offered online but obviously that is a no-no in NJ. Also, they do not seem to be offered in any of the local gun stores, more than likely due to their age. I'd rather not have to travel out of state. Any suggestions? I'd rather not have to travel out-of-state to a PA gun show or something. Best, Michael
