Soon-to-be first time buyer looking for some info regarding handgun permits

Recommended Posts

Hi everybody, my name's Al and I've recently received my firearm ID card and a permit to purchase a handgun. According to my local PD, physical permits are no longer given out, apparently everything is done through some kind of a database. What I'm wondering is, how is this handled when it comes time to make a purchase? Am I correct in assuming that the gun dealer will be able to look me up and see that I have an active permit? And how does this work for online purchases? Is there a way I can obtain a physical copy of this permit if need be? The woman at the PD was a bit vague on that.

Welcome Al. Yes, the dealer will look you up online. Have the reference numbers from the emails sent to you for good measure.

Since any online purchase you make will have to be sent to and transferred from a NJ FFL the procedure will be the same.

Oh man, thank you. I was wondering this myself. The detective who issued me my license was being vague with sayings like "the e-permit is now in the ether so theres no more physical permit" (Haha)

What got me worried was when he told me this whole 'e-permit' was entirely new so he has little knowledge about it.
