Gifting a long gun in New Jersey ?

Recommended Posts

If you are in NJ and still alive, your non-FPID holding friend in NJ CANNOT legally receive your long gun, either as a gift or a purchase.

If you're dead, he can receive ANY firearm from you as a bequeath as long as he is not a Prohibited Possessor.

from you as a bequeath

And that means explicitly stated in a will or some other document. Not sure the estate can legally distribute to non-next in kin without that.  Otherwise it technically goes to the heirs who can then transfer it to the non-family members but that needs a FID.

Had a similar question with slightly different situation.

As the SN implies, I am a former resident of NJ now in a much more gun-friendly state. I want to gift my father in NJ one of my shotguns (legally owned and purchased months ago by me, but not what I wanted) because he and the missus are getting up in years and the good ol' Lousiville slugger is not gonna cut it much longer as they lose grip strength. My current understanding of the NJ laws about gifting long guns and familial transfers; and the Fed laws leads me to two conclusions. Let me know if I missed anything.

1. I need to bring/send the shotgun to an FFL in NJ (transporting it IAW NJ laws to the shop if I bring it in-person) and the patriarch needs a Firearms Purchaser Identification Card and to be NICS-checked to take possession and have it transferred.

2. The transfer is covered by a COE form between immediate family members (even though I am a resident of a state in the Midwest), but the father needs to have a Firearms Purchaser Identification Card

Reckon that sounds about right?

As I see it, any way I do it, NJ makes the receiver register with a Firearms Purchaser Identification Card first before they can take it.

I just got my FID for long guns, although I don't know anything about guns or ammo. What is a good gun to get my hands on that will help me learn more but won't break the bank, at the same time being ideal at home defense?

      Hi Guys,

I found that information about New Jersey's shooting ranges was scattered (if even available) for the various public/private places we shoot at. Please lend me a hand by shooting me a PM with what range(s) you shoot at, and fill in as much of the information as you can below. You can use the blank one at the end to cut and paste into a PM (or a post on this thread) and I will update this post accordingly.

Thanks for your help, and hopefully we can create a single source of information for all the ranges in NJ.

      Hello!
I got a shotgun as a gift from my relative who visited me in NJ. I need to take this to an FFL to do the proper transfer (Firearms Transaction Record/ATF Form 4473), right? I do have the NJ Firearms Purchaser ID and I understand the handgun permit I was recently issued is only good for intra-state (NJ) transactions..
Thanks for any pointers in advance.

Hey Shooters! We have opened registration for the 2018 NJ State Steel Challenge Championship on June 2nd and 3rd.
      http://www.obsteelchallenge.com/obsc-2018-registration
We have changed some things up a bit and I think you guys will be pretty happy about the changes. You can shoot two guns in the same squad, just not back to back. You will have the ability to shoot 6 guns if you shoot 2 guns in each of the 3 sessions (Saturday June 2nd AM, Saturday June 2nd PM, Sunday June 3rd Session).
If you are not very familiar with last year’s match, please feel free to check out our webpage and see the videos as well as links to the Facebook photo albums (Old Bridge Steel Shooters).

The most important thing to note is our chef’s from last year have canceled their global cooking tour and will be joining us…
That is correct, the Boy Scouts are back!
We are looking forward to seeing all of you at our match!!

As I have expressed in another thread, my goal is to conceal carry for the first time within the next few months(in PA). Am in process of acquiring holster, gun belt, etc for my Glock 26 which should arrive in a few days. My specific question for this thread is your thoughts on practicing conceal carry here in NJ using a blue gun. I.e. To verify fit, comfort, holster positioning, etc in various everyday activities.
PA is a 90 minute drive for me so an adhoc ride there is impractical. I did search on this topic and did not find anything.

Your thoughts on potential issues, legal or otherwise, great idea/stupid idea, all welcome.

      Thanks, Art
