Movies where the remake is better than the original

Recommended Posts

This is a fun little discussion going on over on one of the pilot boards, so I thought I'd bring it here.

I'll start off with the one movie that is generating the most disagreement there:  True Grit.  The original and the remake are running neck and neck in that debate.

I'll concede both are very good.   But c'mon...the original stars The Duke.  It's better than the remake.

Really had to think about this one.  Classic successful beloved movies generally do not need to be remade unless some progressive leftard wants to use it as a vehicle to promote an agenda.

My contributions are...  The Fly.  Scarface, and lastly (on the fence with this one) The Jackal.

My list of movies that should have been left the fuck alone instead of  appropriated as vehicles for progressive propaganda is longer.

Silly goose, that was a sequel, not a remake.  But, it was a great movie.  Maybe they should remake it with the Jewish mafia or black mafia.

Ouch, you're right.  While you're humoring me, DiNero made the difference.

I agree most remakes such.  There are exceptions though.

True Grit is one. Jeff Bridges did a good job.

I'll throw in not a remake of a movie but of a TV show I enjoyed The Equalizer.  They changed a few things and the 2nd one was a bit weak but Denzel Washington did a good job.  I think he's one of the best actors ever.  Never saw one of his movies where he didn't do a good job.

It's like Bullet.  Steve McQueen makes that movie, well, the Mustang too, but mostly McQueen.  There is nothing, NOTHING that can be done to that movie that will make it better.  The only reason that flick would get remade is because Ford backed it to sell more Mustangs.  It would not be an improvement.  The entire movie would be a long entertaining advertisement with a good bit of wokeness in it.

this is why i fear remakes. i agree with the fly though.

most know i loves me my mustangs. any of the 60's stangs, the foxbodies, then the retros(s197)

but..i seem to recall reading somewhere that the drivers had to hold back in the charger so mcqueen could stay near them.

but no.......that movie cannot be improved on.

there is this chase scene remake on youtube......

The famous Car chase from Bullitt revisited, 2013 style! - YouTube

 "The Thing"

Well at last. A thread about entertainment so we can stop talking about War and Peace for at least five minutes.

I must say I distinguish between genres of movies that are decades apart. Standards, techniques, tastes and writing change so much I'm not sure some comparisons are fair.

The Thing, The Day The Earth Stood Still, And Godzilla are in my top five sci-fi/monster movies of all time. But for different reasons.

The Thing produced (and really directed) by Howard Hawk is a classic. The dialogue, the actors, the direction and yes the story line were all superb. After all, it is a sci-fi movie. The remake was also really good, for different reasons. Completely different story line, much more stunning special effects, and more of a 'horror' feel to it. I liked them both, but wouldn't compare them to each other.

The original Day the Earth Stood Still was a classic. Top notch actors, a simple but effective story line ("We do not pretend to have achieved perfection. But we have a system, and it works.") and great direction and writing. ("Maybe we can scare him more than he can scare us.") The remake with Keanu Reeves' Klaatu was to me a little stilted. And they just had to interject the racial component to feel contemporary. John Cleese as the professor was a little too cut and dried with his instruction. On the other hand, great special effects, a good story line and some plot twists. I liked it a lot.

The original Godzilla is another classic. I mean a guy in a rubber suit stomping through a studio floor Tokyo? And Perry Mason is chronicling the entire thing? What's not to like? LOL (Must watch the original Japanese Gojira to appreciate why the movie was made in the first place.) I remember watching it 19 times in one week on Channel 9's Million Dollar Movie and I was scared to death every time. All the subsequent remakes were crap IMO, except the 2014 version with Bryan Cranston. That remake had a great and plausible follow-up story line, and the effects matched up with it nicely.

Well that's my contribution to serenity for a change. Now I need to check my DVD stash. I think I'm due for a re-run of something. Maybe... Killers From Space? Hahaha!

These are all better than the originals IMO

• Count of Monte Cristo (2002)

• Four Feathers (2002)

• Magnificent Seven* (2016)

• Thomas Crown Affair (1999)

• Man on Fire (2004)

• Dredd (2012)

• Casino Royale (2006)

• Insomnia (2002 - remake of a Norwegian movie)

• The Departed (2006 - original was called “Internal Affairs”)

Looking forward to the new Dune movie (Releases in October 21) as well.

Good call on The Thing, The Fly, and True Grit.

So - what about reimagining or reboots, specifically in comic book and sci-fi movies. The most recent “Star Trek” movies were damn good, but they were their own stories, not really remakes.

The Henry Cavill “Man of Steel” was way better than Reeves’ “Superman”. Bale’s Batman movies are better than the Keaton/Clooney/Kilmer’s.

Is a live action version of a previously animated movie considered a “remake” the “live-action/CGI” Jungle Book was good.

* I waffle on this one. They are both really good.

Krdshrk, I respect your firearms knowledge, but the Ocean's 11 remake better than the original with the rat pack? No way!

45Doll, I too remember watching Godzilla and other movies in black and white on Million Dollar Movie over and over again. Matter of fact, the Million Dollar Movie theme song came to mind reading your post.

Hahaha! You got that right!  The Million Dollar Movie theme was from Gone With The Wind. (Uh oh... racist!) I was home sick with the measles or something the week that was on, so I watched it twice a night M-F and three times on Saturday and Sunday. I can still hum the entire musical score. Especially those single low-octave piano notes. Used to drive one of my bench tech buddies wild with it two decades later.

The original Magnificent seven were ronin samurai, and also Japanese.  Which, I guess, is implicit.  The Seven Samurai is one of the most copied stories ever.

Yes, I know. I was specifically referring to the two Westerns of the exact same title. The Yul Brenner one is awesome. The Denzel one is too. I think whichever one I have most recently seen is the one I like more.

I have “7 Samurai” (and some other Akira Kirusawa flicks) on VHS around here somewhere….

Original Judge Dredd is campy but you can't say the new one's better - it's apples vs tomatoes

Yes different storyline and all, again - that goes to my superhero/comicbook/sci-fi reboot vs remake. Does a reboot with a different storyline count as a remake? In the case of Dredd, it is what the original should have been so I say it counts. That Stallone one should have never been made. It’s terrible.

Francis Ford Coppola's version of Bram Stoker's 'Dracula".  Great remake.  Probably still holds up as good movie.  Way it was shot was great.  More modern movie but still felt old.

Cape Fear with Dinero.  Though I can't stand him now.

Already mentioned but John Carpenter's The Thing was great.  They tried to remake it again in 2011 and while the special effects were more modern the remake wasn't nearly as good.  Jones Carpenter's version is awesome!

Also "The Blob"

I actually didn't know they remade the Blob. I'll have to check that out. Thanks for the post.

The original (Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan in 1989) went WAY better than the remake (US withdrawal in 2021)!

But getting back to movies, Casino Royale was very good, but the original was kind of a spoof, so I hesitate to call Daniel Craig's version a remake.

Much like The Three Amigos wasn't quite a remake of The Magnificent Seven.  More of a comedic re-imagination of the original.
