Glockmeister 3 Posted October 22, 2021 Hello. I recently had my FID and handgun permit and in just the last few weeks, I already purchased a 9mm handgun, a hunting rifle and shotgun/firearm. Two different transactions. Now I am planning a 3rd transaction to purchase an NJ legal/compliant semi-auto rifle. This completes my ideal first collection. Is there a limit on how many rifles I can own? I see myself inclined towards rifles/shotguns so my collection will probably be geared towards this type. Thanks. You could buy as many long guns as you want at once. That doesn't mean it wouldn't raise some eyebrows if you bought 10 at once, but it is legal. There is a OGAM exemption that allows for the transfer of multiple handguns at once. You need to have all serial numbers in advance and apply for permission and pay more fees.

kc17 622 Posted October 23, 2021 You can also buy a handgun and multiple long guns at once. Benefits of purchasing more than one at a time, you save on the NICS tax.

That exemption has rules and criteria you must follow. The main one is when you apply for it you must specify all the handguns you wish to buy at once and their serial numbers. That implies you have all the handguns you want waiting somewhere with someone who will transfer them to you after the exemption is approved and you exercise it. This used to be based in paper forms, but is now done digitally in FARS. I just updated this post. There are no forms to download. The FARS application process will ask right up front if you want to apply for a Multiple Handgun Exemption. The PDF file I originally referenced was only useful instruction to a dealer on how to properly execute a MHE. I have used at least four of these exemptions when it was appropriate.
