Where Did You Go / Are You Thinking Of Moving TO When You Leave NJ

I'm also interested in areas around Charleston, SC.  We vacationed at Seabrook Island, SC about ten years ago.  Next to Hawaii it was one of the prettiest places I've been.

Smart choice, and I couldn't agree more.

I’ve not been to Charleston. It looks very nice and always ranks among best places to live in news surveys.

You should go.  Magnificant old homes/mansions, lots of history, Fort Sumter, carriage ride around the city, plantation tours, restaurants and bars.  We stayed on Sea Brook Isand which is only houses, townhomes and some condos.  Only the golf course club house.  No IHOPs, restaurants, bars, Starbucks...nothing.  But Charleston was only about 35 minutes or so away.  Relaxed on Sea Brook and when we wanted to we drove into downtown Charleston to sightsee.  It would be great to stay in the downtown area but it was my family and my parents.  We wanted to spend some time together and didn't want to stay in hotel rooms.

Nassau county, west of Callahan, by the Georgia border. It’s farm, cattle, and horse country. You can shoot on your own land, and still be on the beach in under an hour. Stay away from the west side of Duval county.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will definitely check that out

Parts of it have really shot up in price; Bozeman, the lake district (Flathead, Whitefish, etc).   I think further out on the plains to the east it's still pretty affordable, but then you are further away from the gorgeous mountains.

You really have to like the winter if you move there.

I think Charleston is one of those few places that if you were blindfolded and then dropped off there, you would instantly recognize it.

We're going to be passing through Charleston on our return trip from Florida in April, and wondering about suggestions for places to see or interesting points of interest? What's the hot places?

Thanks for those suggestions. They're definitely on the list. I also wanted to see Ft. Sumter, but I'll have poochie with us, and since it's a boat ride over to the fort, I don't want to leave him long term in the RV.

I saw King St is a happening place, so we'll have to hit one of them for lunch. Wifey will probably want to see one of the mansions too, so I'll have to give in and see one.

Ooh I forgot about Leon’s Oyster shop..great place.

There is another place, I believe on King Street that does a Gospel brunch. Not only is the food amazing, but the gospel singers they bring in, are fantastic.

I can’t think of the name of that place for the life of me.

While Halls is awesome and we highly recommend it, at the end of the day it's a classic steakhouse and you can get that anywhere.  This is where they have the gospel brunch.

For a true Charleston dining experience, these are our favorites:

  • Magnolias
  • Anson
  • High Cotton (owned by Halls)
  • SNOB (owned by Halls)
  • Fig (Mike Lata - very hard to get resy)
  • The Ordinary (also Mike Lata)
  • Hank's Seafood
  • Bowens Island (classic "fish camp")
  • Rodney Scott's barbecue (James Beard winner)
  • Home Team barbecue (3 locations)
  • Lenoir (Vivan Howard)
  • Rutledge Cab (Bill Murray - good for burgers)
  • Leon's
  • Little Jack's Tavern

That's an awesome list. Thanks so much, there's a lot to see...

I have a couple of curve balls, first I'm rolling into town in my RV, so downtown parking can be a challenge. I saw a parking garage on Mary St. by the visitor's center that states it's high enough for it. Know of any other places/ parking lots?

Also going to have the 4 legged co-pilot with us, so he'll probably go with us for the downtown walk, so I'll need to find a dog friendly tavern for lunch.

I'm thinking on hitting Patriots Point and Ft. Moultrie the second day, and there's plenty of parking over there, so the RV shouldn't be an issue.

Then, I'll need to do a plantation tour for wifey... you know, equal opportunity, and all that crap...

There are plenty of commercial open parking lots in town.  I can probably also come up with a visitor residential parking pass for you so you can park anywhere south of Broad.

You might want to check out The Barrel, outdoor place towards Folly Beach where the dogs can run around.

If you're really into BBQ, there's a great place I discovered a little south of Chuck-Town just off I-95 in the town of Walterboro called Duke's BBQ. $13.00 all you can eat Buffet of some of the very best BBQ in the area.  They are open Wed - Sat 11:00a - 9:00p and Sun 11:00a - 2:00p.  If you choose to go on Sunday, get there as early as possible because the "Sunday Brunch" crew gets there right after Church and you may not even get near the place.

I was looking around on the satellite map of downtown, searching for open lots that it will fit in. It's a busy area. I've read a lot of good reviews about that parking garage on Mary St., I just don't know how far away it is from all the hot spots?

Bringfido is always my go to source when going into a new area to give me some ideas. In most cases, when we go to the dog friendly taverns, he gets better service then we do from the staff... :drinks:  I'm going to make HIM pay the bill next time...  :mutley:

Mary Street is going to be almost a 2 mile walk to get to the Battery and my guess is that most of what you would want to see is down in that area.  I think the Harris Teeter lot on East Bay could be another option for you.

With a visitor parking pass you could park here on Limehouse Street - plenty of space and no one will bother you.

Thanks, I thought that it would be a hike from Mary Street. The Harris Teeter lot would work, I can fit in a double head to head space, as long as there isn't an island in the middle.

Yup,

Should fit in the area near Society/Washington, no one will bother it there.

For those of you who live in or very familiar with the Charleston area and would be kind enough to speak with me, please PM and I’ll send my phone number.  The more research I’m doing the more enamored I’m becoming with the area.  It’s in a great spot and easier for me to travel the country from there.

I plan on taking a trip, gonna drive so I can take my time, over the next few weeks.

Thanks in advance to anyone willing to have a chat with me.  I promise I’m a good neighbor, decent stack of toys and I’m good at sharing. ;)
