Prep for Russia Ukraine backlash

Recommended Posts

What are your recommendations to prep for what's going on in Ukraine and Russia's promised "Strong Response" to US sanctions?

I just filled all my fuel tanks as price of gas hasn't risen near me yet, but I expect it to very soon.

I would expect to see Russia trying to hack our infrastructure.  I've seen a huge increase of Russian phishing scam emails in the past month.  He's also threatened possible nuclear retaliation, but highly unlikely.   NATO Ammo could get scarce as demand for it rises.  Other ammo could get scarce as production focuses on increase demand for NATA ammo.

So what prep do you recommend to hedge against the wide variety of possible situations unique to what's currently going on?

Price of anything aluminum will shoot up. They were our #1 importer of aluminum ingot.

Beer cans are made of aluminum. Time to start shooting Russians.

I read that Ukraine and Russia produce a lot of wheat and corn respectively.  While that is not something that we import directly from them, the current situation is likely to lead to a supply/demand imbalance that will cause price increases because the amount they contribute to the supply of those commodities will be reduce due to respective war/sanctions.  Wheat and corn are grown seasonally so the prices are set on a futures market based on anticipated supply availability.  Issues like drought, war, crop damaging pests and other nature disasters cause futures market prices on perishable commodities to fluctuate just like we see when crude oil prices fluctuate during war, pipeline damage via weather/accidents/sabotage, oil rig fires, tanker ships getting highjacked or running aground, etc.  I don't think we will see a shortage of these items here, but the prices might go up.  Other countries that did directly import from Ukraine or Russia will most likely notice the most impact.

Interesting to see what is happening in Russia to Russian people.  No access to credit cards, banks can't move money, property/assets are getting seized/frozen.  All fairly quickly and without due process.  US is looking to control digital currencies.  More reason to up your emergency cash you keep on hand.

Also Russia passed laws allowing them to imprison or sanction reporters who report things the government does not approve or like, as well as blocking outside news.  Imagine America doing something similar and using what you say or post as a pretense for freezing your assets.  They already have the FBI labelling parents speaking up as Domestic Terrorists.  Normally I'd say this could never happen, but after last 2 years, anything is possible.

I could go on, but I wont.  They control the message from almost cradle to grave.

White ....excuse me.... straight white men have been all but obliterated from TV advertising.  Somehow, magically, the USA is comprised mostly of multi racial and gay couples.  It's like white NORMAL nuclear families don't exist but to be mocked in TV ads.  Oh, and all the fuck'n sudden, Jake from State Farm is a teleporting black dude  who just shows up in people's houses.

I would recommend being especially vigilant, not complacent, and top off all your preps if you have not done so recently already. Especially water, water purification,  food, otc medicines, batteries, power generation to name a few. (See Peel’s thread from a few months ago for more info.)

Also I want to point out something that under normal circumstances is something highly unlikely you would ever need; BUT if you ever needed it, would be impossible to find. And that is potassium iodide tablets. In particular, the gold standard which is IOSTAT manufactured and sold by www.anbex.com.  Check their website. They are currently out of stock but you can put your name on a list to be notified when they come in. More expected “mid-March” but I am sure they will sell out very quickly. I have had enough on hand in my home for all my immediate family, children, and grandchildren. Given current events, I have given them out to my kids to have at hand in their respective homes.

Russia has about 4500 nukes.  The Chinese have a few as well.  They aren't all aimed at us but I'm guessing most of them are.  If the worse ever happens potassium iodide tables may help you if you like 100 miles from the closest military base or missile silo in Utah.  All the major cities and surrounding areas will be wiped out instantly.  Anything near a military base or missile silo will be wiped out.  The people who get vaporized immdediately (most of us living in NJ and tri-State area) will be the lucky ones.

On that cheery note, it's highly unlikely the worse case scenario ever occurs.  Because it's a lose/lose for everyone involved.  And all of humanity really.

Cyber attacks are probably our biggest real threat right now.  Won't be able to work remote if internet is down.  Masss transit could go down at same time.  So it you have to commute into city to work about the only option will be bus or to drive in.  But if you work on a computer, will you be even able to work if you were able to get into the city?

If you haven't already, it's probably a good time to stock up on water and non-perishable foods.

I sure hope you're right.

But I don't completely discount use of the nuclear equivalent of a suicide vest.

Regarding IOSTAT, you'll need to read this:

With our location, I think that is a waste of time. Keep your ammo dry, water stock. And wait to see what putin does.

Switch to Amercian whiskey and bourbon.

I am a fan of bourbon however I really like beer too. I actually have a bourbon made by Milk St Distilling from the wort from 3 different beers from Czig Meister Brewing. It's surprisingly tasty.

Always a good idea to hope for the best but prep for the worst, Curious do you guys think this could spill over into the rest of Europe and its game on? WE have been lucky in the past other than Sept, 11th but the world is a much smaller place now, I am not so sure we would be spared anything happening over here this time , if this all goes to hell.

Thoughts or am I would up or overreacting for nothing?

which is why i've emptied my checking account down to only just barely have bills covered.

here's a fun thought about mass transit going down. more people'll be on the roads. and just think......how many of the traffic lights are controlled through the interweb too?

I'm keeping a lot more cash in small denominations ($20 max) around.  If Russian-sponsored actors take down a major credit card network things could get "awkward" for a bit.

I have also been keeping more cash on hand. I probably should have more 20s on hand but they do take up a lot more space than 50s and 100s.

I could see Jersey being hit due to Naval Weapon Station Earle. Why waste a good bomb on Philly?  Not much military stuff there anymore.

There are a several petro/chemical refineries in NJ right?. They could be strategic targets.

Lots of the big financial institutions moved to NJ offices after 9/11 too. There is a boatload of compute power installed around some towns in NJ.
