NJ Handgun Carry Permit Application Experience

Recommended Posts

Well, hold onto your hats. I received a call from the PO at my local station this AM to come and pick up my permit. They backdated it to be under 90 days, LOL.
One issue is they didn’t check any box on the restrictions list. Not sure if that’s good or bad, but the court order that came with it is a simple one-page document signed by the judge that says ‘blah blah is hereby issued a permit to carry a pistol’.
Thanks for all of the support to get me here!

NY's attempt at this was stopped by the courts within a few days.  Bruen makes it clear that every one of these restrictions is unconstitutional.  As soon as this is passed, one of NJ's gun organizations will be in federal court filing papers to stop this and I'll send them a donation as soon as I know who that is.

I don't know the timeline but I really believe these restrictions won't last very long.

Not exactly... The first Judge did a temporary injunction. Then another Judge allowed them to go into effect while the lawsuits went up the chain.

I handed in my application on August 10th in Woolwich, Gloucester County. I hadn’t been diligent about keeping track on whether my money order was cashed or not. When I decided to check my money order on September 28th, it was cashed. So this means it’s at the court, right? Any idea how long the process takes at that point for Gloucester County? They are doing mandatory hearings in Gloucester, so I’m thinking I may not get scheduled until November or December.

LOL. I'm a little concerned about the fact that they didn't check any boxes. I'm hoping that doesn't come back to haunt me later. There was no attached court order with 50000 restrictions on it like some folks have gotten, at least.

Thanks for posting. Now I am back to being unhappy.

My app went to the same court about 2 weeks ago. Guessing it's still going to be awhile. My money order hasn't been cashed yet either.

Have you notified ANJRPC Strike Force as they are well over 30 days at the court phase?

Sounded like there was a Christie-appointed judge handling permits now. Maybe he/she is just overwhelmed (not that that is an acceptable excuse)? Anyone else have any inside baseball on Mercer?

Who did you contact at the court regarding status?

At my court (Hudson) it was a person at 'Criminal division customer service'. There is one person in that department that handles all permits.

The judge may as well "delay" forever.  Once that bill becomes law, you'll be basically only be allowed to carry in your house, and in your yard.

I think that’s where its going for now at least prior to both side lawyering-up.   With Trenton being in Mercer I think Mercer is slow walking the permits waiting for lawmakers to enact its new carry laws. Over in the county by county thread they are saying two were issued in Mercer but I think there is more to the story than just two applicants just going through normal channels, at best Mercer should be yellow

Welcome to the forum. Are you sure about July 16? The 16th was a Saturday and I don't think the HTPD Firearms Unit has hours on Saturday. https://www.hamiltonnj.com/231/Firearms-Unit

That backdate sounds like an admission of guilt. I hope strike force is on this. You won, but did you really? They still delayed the shit out of it. If we don't all win, none of us win.

I wonder if the judges will delay signing off on any more permits until this a4769 bill gets signed off on by the clown we have as a governor ?

This has been my assumption for all of the delays and the PDs "waiting for further guidance".

I'll remember that next time I get a moving violation. I'm going to notify the PD and Court that I am awaiting further guidance until I move forward with paying any fines.

If they can wait for the laws to change prior to taking action, instead of adhering to the current statutes, so can I, no?

They gave no explanation on why it took weeks to go from being signed and completed to being given to me. The PO was surly and clearly annoyed that he had to give me the permit. I responded with a weapons-grade assault smirk. They are clearly aware that they're not following guidance with that backdating move.

Your assumption was correct. I submitted my application Tuesday July 19, 2022. Thanks for catching that detail, I corrected my original post.

I did send an Email to Strike Force today. Also, I don't recall the name of the person, however he is the person that receives and processes (sending and receiving the documents to and from the PO, judge, and police department) the application. The Mercer County Superior Court phone number is 609-571-4200. At the menu prompt enter extension 74050 to speak with the person in question.

As I've stated elsewhere on the forum, a VERY reliable source told me that the usual judge who handles this wasn't going to sign off on us peons permits and that he was replaced by a Christie appointed judge who will.  I'm assuming there's a backlog, so hopefully the clog will be opened, and things will start flowing.

Would them choosing to do what THEY want to do as opposed to what the scotus said to do not be grounds for removal? Seems like a violation of oath to me…decisions should be based on law and not personal feelings or what those lining his pockets tell him to do

Appreciate the affirmation. Just frustrated at how long things are taking, the lack of transparency, etc.

I was informed that I had approximately 50 people ahead of me. I'll post again once I receive an update.

In Somerset County no permits have been issued and there are some applications going back to early July. I read the tactic as "perpetual delay" . If the latest law proposal passes then the carry permits will be useless until such day that they can be challenged. Its not a short process.

Here we go to a class for a few hours then qualify to pass with some stringent requirements, submit to several FBI background checks, a mental health check and we are judged by the socialist NJ legislature as unqualified to carry. This is a sad situation folks. My only hope is that the few legislators that have carry permits will balk at the virtual carry ban.

Add to that list judge’s, prosecutor’s, mayor’s and wealthy A-listers of the community who have them. They will be affected as well.

Prosecutors are statutorily allowed to carry. They won’t be affected by this.

The wealthy elite class will be though. Curious as to what they’ll do.

My question is about the municipality code in the upper right corner of the carry permit app.

My servicing PD are the njsp augusta barracks. I live in Stillwater BUT my mail comes from Newton, My DL is Newton, and my FID is Newton. Am I supposed to use the Stillwater code where I reside OR the Newton code where all of my ID states?

Any help is appreciated I would like to file and qualify next week.
