Gun for a motorhome ?

Recommended Posts

(Mods - If this isn't the right forum please move it for me)

So the wife and I plan on escaping the Socialist Republik of NJ sometime in the next few years.

The original idea was to move down to the Myrtle beach area but the population there has exploded in the past 5 years and it's no longer an option. We've decided to take a year or two and explore the country and find the place that's right for us. We recently picked up a 27' Coachmen Leprechaun Premier 260DS (Class C) to do this in. It goes to U-Joint in January for a 4x4 conversion and 6" lift. We plan on doing a lot of boondocking off the grid all around the country (and some hardcore surf fishing down on Island Beach State Park

Being off on our own means we're going to require the means to protect ourselves both from bad guys and from large hungry critters. Whatever it is has to be legal in all 48 contiguous US States. Iif I'm forced to use it I don't want to be the person going to jail.

I'd like a 10mm handgun or a 44 mag Super Redhawk but I'm afraid of states like Illinois and California - I've a lot of (lunatic) family out in California that I'll have to visit and Illinois is like a wall in the middle of the country that is almost impossible to avoid if you want to go anywhere in the northern half of the county. I've no desire to get locked up just for having a gun those lefty governments don't like in the camper.

Because of this I've been looking at pump bullpup shotguns, the Keltek KS7 in particular. The problem with the Keltek is the size - not a lot of places to hide it in the camper where it can be easily accessed in an emergency, and it's too big and obvious strapped onto my backpack while hiking in bear country. I don't need every Karen I run into on the trail calling the police (and I seem to attract those crazies like bees to honey).

It's a lot easier to keep the 10mm close by (at my waist).

So does the new Supreme Court ruling make it easier for me to go the 10MM  / 44 mag route, or am I still stuck going with the shotgun ?

You're not going to be able to transport/carry around the 48 states with a handgun.  NY/NJ/CT/MA, IL, MD, Cali, etc - you could find yourself in a world of hurt.  The NYSRPA v Bruen Supreme court decision has done absolutely nothing with reciprocity - it just cleared up the extra requirements that states would throw on to make it impossible to get a carry permit.

You're pretty much stuck with a pump action or break action shotgun.  One nice thing about break actions is that they do takedown very easily and quickly...  Even with a rifle - you'd run into restricted states like NY or CA and run into issues.

Kind of what I figured, I've been reading since I posted this and a handgun, although the better solution, simply carries too much risk.

Looks like I'm going this way:

Keltek KS7 - pump action, tubular magazine, 6+1 3" shells, overall length 26.1", 18.5" barrel, bottom ejection so ambidextrous, legal everywhere. All around pretty badass design.

It's actually shorter than a Shockwave and far easier to aim

I keep thinking that there must be some web page or other resource dedicated to firearms for RV owners, but I haven't yet found one.

And if you bring the subject up on one of the RV forums you get edited (or banned)

I've browsed RV boards before looking for an answer to the firearms question, and mostly see recommendations to leave them home because there is such a patchwork of state and local laws (and local interpretations thereof)  that it would be easy to get tripped up.  It has also been noted that when you leave home you may not know where your travels will take you, and if you do decide to visit a hyper-restrictive place, you won't have good options to leave the gun anywhere else.

These were not encouraging answers at all, but as noted in this thread, a shotgun should be the least likely to cause problems.
