Lawnmower2021 423 Posted August 30, 2022 Hey All, Our split AC just bought the farm. Nobody we called so far is willing the fix the thing and the ballpark estimates we get for a new split or central air job seem extreme. Any suggestions? We'd like to move towards Central Air, and also appreciate any general information on the topic.
Tunaman 538 Posted August 30, 2022 Just a little info on these Mini Splits... You can buy the entire kit, and you can do it your self if you are mechanically inclined. They even have the freon installed and you wont need more unless it is over like 50 ft away. I got a Daikin and did mine myself. It wasnt bad at all. I got an 18k unit(cool only) that does my whole upstairs for 1800.00. That was a couple of years ago.
Jackruf 7 Posted August 30, 2022 We were very happy with Bornstein&Sons. I believe in Caldwell area. Very professional, family owned, and reasonable
leahcim 673 Posted September 4, 2022 The mini split units are cheap ($1-3k for 18,000 btu). Seville, Mr. Cool, Fujitsu, Gree. Requires no special tools except for hooking up the refrigerant pipes, and doing pressure test and evac. You can hire an HVAC guy to do that (be prepared to call a lot of companies, I've found about half won't touch it and half of those that will are expensive... Keep calling, they are out there) Or you can go with one of the Mr Cool true DIY, which comes with charged and pressurized line set and other components. Cost a bit more, but an HVAC contractor is going to cost too.
Lawnmower2021 423 Posted September 4, 2022 Thanks for the input everyone. Yes, so far people are reluctant to repair vs replace. We're getting some quotes on going full central air next week to compare. Our split lasted about 12 years so it makes sense to replace in any case. I will consider DIY since everything is already there for it. I'll do some research and see if it makes sense to do alone.
leahcim 673 Posted September 4, 2022 And keep in mind, you're replacing existing so much of the heavy lifting has already been done in terms of electric circuit, disconnect box, wall penetration, outdoor platform. You just have to remove the old unit and place the new indoor mounting bracket to line up with the existing wall penetration. And get it level of course.
