What is a good place to find out what "code" is?

Assuming you are pulling a permit,  the town inspector who will inspect the final installation may* be an excellent resource to talk you through what needs to be done.  Surest way to make certain that it will pass inspection.  The name may be available on the town website, or you can get it through the building department.

*I say 'may' because most of the inspectors I've dealt with have been very helpful, but some are quite obstructionist when it comes to homeowners doing their own work.   Hope you have one of the good ones.
