Recommended Posts

Going camping out west this summer, looking for a bear protection gun

Have permit in hand

Taurus Raging Judge or Ruger Alaskan would be nice but willing to look at others

Edit - The clock is ticking, permit countdown ..... 79 days left as of 12/24

I don't have one to sell, but have you considered a .460 S&W?...shoots 460, 454 Cas & 45 colt

Wait.... what? A 460 can shoot both ?? And 45 ?

How can that work?

I'm new to this heavy caliber, over .44 mag, world.

Same diameter, different lengths. The longer cylinders can shoot the shorter cartridges.

A .357 mag revolver can also shoot .38 special

A .44 mag revolver can also shoot .44 special

A .327 Fed Mag revolver can shoot .32 ACP, .32 short, .32 long & .32 H&R Mag.

A 10mm revolver can also shoot .40 S&W.

The S&W Governor revolvers can shoot .45 colt, .45 ACP and 2 1/2" .410 shotgun shells

Revolvers are fun!!!

Yes but 460 and 454 are different diameters

The .460 S&W round is a lengthened, more powerful version of the popular .454 Casull, itself a longer and more powerful version of the .45 Colt.

[1]

It has the same bullet diameter, same case diameter and a 10.9mm longer case.

Sometimes marketing departments like round numbers, sometimes they just like different numbers.

The .454 Casull, .45 Colt, and the .460 S&W all fire a .452 bullet.  Case lengths differ, but not bore diameter.

I did not know that, thank you.

Shipping to a NJ FFL has never been an issue for me.

Also, If heading out west, keep in mind that a very large caliber is seldom needed in most states. I would actually forego anything larger than 10mm/357mag except where you might come across brown/grizzlies. You'll see that their current ranges are quite small pockets in Montana, Washington, Idaho and Wyoming.

Of course, the Canadian Rockies and Alaska are a different story.
