You joke, but this isn't too far off.  There are outfits that use helicopter.  Outfits that use full auto in jeeps.  Outfights using thermal and night vision.  It really is a war.  And the pigs are winning.

That was no joke. That’s the way to do it.

that sounds pretty cheap, 'cause it's goofy expensive to operate a helo.......

From what I understand, it’s one of those Robinson(?) helis.

I’ll see if I can find the link again.

Here’s a couple. I was wrong on pricing. $2500/shooter with 2 hours flight time.

I doubt there is a mini gun involved, unfortunately.

oohh....i think the older robinsons used to have issues with the rotor blades. think that's been solved.....but they're still ugly

Mast bumping.   Robinson's use a 'teetering' rotor design, which in some regimes of flight (low-G maneuvers, and I think certain turning maneuvers, though I've no flying experience with helicopters) the rotor disk can tilt so far that it clips the mast.

It used to be that the fuel tanks were quite prone to rupture as well, but I think that has been improved in the later models.

That's on top of the big laundry list of other things that can go fatally wrong with helicopters.  I've always liked the definition that a helicopter is 'a swirling mass of metal fatigue surrounding an oil leak'.

They don't tend to glide very well.

you'd be surprised. helos use a procedure called auto-rotation. engine goes away, lower the collective, keep the helo moving forward as best as possible. as it descends, the rotor speed increases due to the air rushing upwards through them. as you're getting close to touchdown, you flare.....bring the collective up. changes the blades angle, and provides a cushion for landing.

the kay to keeping control though is to keep forward motion if possible. i've got about 2 hours in a schweizer cb300, but no solo, and never done an auto rotation. hell....hovering is like balancing a pencil on your fingertip. by its point. i have auto-rotated my r/c helos a couple times. one time, i flared too soon, and lost control.......that was a stupid mistake.

I think all helis are a disaster waiting to happen. It’s not a matter of ‘if’. It’s ‘when’.

helos don't fly. they're so ugly that the earth repels them.

Helicopters don't actually fly, ya know?  They screw themselves through the air.

I've witnessed exactly one helicopter crash in my life.  It was a....wait for it.....Robinson.

i didn't personally see them, but saw the aftermath. both pilot error. one was an instruction flight. instructor was having student practice auto-roatations. student froze up when he saw the ground rushing up to meet him, instructor let things go too far before assuming control.

other one was same flight school. student on solo. lost the tail rotor. tried to land in someones back yard in pa. made a big mess.
