Surplus Ammo

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if there was a problem using surplus ammo in a newer rifle? I see that there is a lot of surplus 30 06 available for the old Garands, can I use them in a new bolt action rifle. It says it is all non corrosive?

Garand ammo has a pressure curve designed to prevent damage to its action. It will work fine it a bolt gun. If its corrosive nothing cleans better than water although Hoppe's #9 or old GI borecleaner will wotk. To see how different things work on corrosive salts see:

Thanks guys, Since I will probably never go hunting with this thing, I figured I could use surplus for plinking and practice at the range and if I get good, use the good stuff for any matches we get into. Probably just stick with the non corrosive to make life simple.

at home is fine - in hot humid weather i have seen rust starting in 5 or 6 hours - best to clean again the next day - i've seen some ammo advertised as non corrosive that really was not -
