My daughter travels routinely with her pistols and ammo. Contact the airline for instructions. You can find instructions on the airlines site as well. I would strongly suggest that you print out the airline instructions from their site and take them with you.

http://www.handgunlaw.us/ This is a good starting point. But I would also go to the official AZ site and read and PRINT OUT their laws as well and take them with you.

I'm sure you will follow the exact letter of the law but be discrete and polite of course.

I'm sure if you are prepared, discrete and polite you will not have a problem and a pleasant trip.

Have fun,

Frank

I believe you have to notify them that you have a firearm to check in and it must be in an airline approved metal lockable case

+1 except I think it needs to be a hard case, not necessarily metal.

Also, based on some highly publicized cases since 9/11, make sure you have your Firearms Purchaser ID and any paperwork proving ownership(even though not legally required). COPIES of that paperwork. It may get seized from you. There was a man transiting through Newark from Idaho to PA who was accosted and charged with all sorts of stuff for having a pistol in NJ. The case was eventually dropped but who knows if the man ever got his gun back.

Furthermore, even though you may be able to carry in the destination airport, keep it in your luggage until you get to your destination, don't let it leave your sight however. There was a man charged for that in PA in the past year. Got his luggage off the belt, put gun in holster and was subsequently tackled by the police.

Definitely check with the airline and be sure your locked case is airline approved. Ammo should not be loaded but may be in the same hard case.

I know a guy who flew to Texas with his guns several times without a hitch. When you go to check in, make sure the counter person is aware of it, but don't be loud about it. You have to have a declaration tag but I'm unclear how that works.

Your luggage must also have a lock. Get a TSA approved lock.

Thanks, for the feed back. I am going to pick up ammo at distanation. Do not want to transport with ammo in gun case. ck out some pistol classes in az. a lot cheaper $ then here. also may sign up for non res. az. ccw. thanks again.

Visit the TSA site for traveling with firearms:

http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/ ... _1666.shtm

There you will find that all firearms must be in a locked, hard-sided container. Ammunition must be secured in its own packaging (see exceptions on the page, but loose ammo is not allowed).

DO NOT use a TSA lock--you must use a keyed or combination lock for your firearm case. If TSA needs you to open your case, they will only do so while you are present.

Visit your airline's website for any additional requirements. Declare your unloaded firearm at the counter (NOT curbside checkin). Counter agent will give you a declaration form to fill out and sign.

When I traveled with my pistol, the counter agent (after I signed the form) escorted me to the TSA area. They put my bag (with locked case inside) on a conveyor through an x-ray, the agent gave me thumbs up, and I was on my way.

I don't think you'll have any problems in Arizona. I had none when I was in Nevada.

As long as you're following TSA regs I wouldn't worry too much about the PA Police hassling you. The incident you mention was settled out of court. I don't know what the settlement was but it was very expensive for the Port Authority and I'm sure they have fully educated everyone regarding TSA regs and FOPA.

TSA is only supposed to make sure that you are traveling in compliance with federal air regulations. It is not within their scope to ask about registration, or even to notify Port Authority.

The Revell case was brought to District Court for civil rights violations, but as I understand it, it is now (as of October 2009) stuck in procedural motions. It was not settled.

Revell was not a resident of NJ; that's the reason they arrested him. If he were a NJ resident, and had a NJ FID on him, they probably would not have arrested him, but rather let him go after a lecture and some threats.
