1. Application type: Handgun permits

2. Police Department where you applied: NJSP Sussex Station

3. Name of the person you dealt with at the PD: Sgt. Hollar

4. Time taken to issue FID and/or permit: 11 weeks

5. Documents required by the PD: none. All standard.

6. Notes -  Sgt. Hollar is very efficient and processes the applications in a timely manner. 9 weeks worth of the delay is simply getting the permits typed in Trenton. So much for the AG's directive to get things working in a timely manner.

Another friend of mine:

1. Application type (FID/permit w/ existing FID): FID and handgun permits
2. Police Department where you applied: NJSP Washington Station
3. Name of the person he dealt with at the PD: Sgt. Hyler
4. Time taken to issue FID and/or permit: see notes
5. Documents required by the PD: None
6. Notes - My friend had an issue back when he was in his teens. He brought the issue to the attention of the NJSP before he even applied, and provided documentation supporting his position that his application should be granted. After discussion, they advised him he could and should apply. He applied last February. They cashed his check in late March. He waited approximately 11 months with no word. This week he called the barracks, and they said the delay was in Trenton. He called the FIU, and the detective told him they were going to deny his application due to the fact that he might have been sentenced to something, rather than what actually happened.

So in other words, they decided to deny his application and waited for him to call to find out. As of yet he has received no written denial.

I was speechless.

1. Application type: initial FID and 4 pistol permits

2. Police Department where you applied: Raritan twp.

3. Name of the person you dealt with at the PD: unsure. I spoke with 2 people

4. Time taken to issue FID and/or permit: applied oct. 24 2016 received dec. 30 2016

5. Documents required by the PD: license, passport, social security card, bank statement with current address.

6. Notes: I had a few slight difficulties. the first guy I spoke to didn't tell me I needed proof of address so I had to go home and get a bank statement. also I applied on October 24th. on November 22nd I got a call regarding an arrest I had about 7 or 8 years ago after talking with him for like 5 minutes he told me that I shouldn't have anything to worry about and I would get a call in a few days. I didn't get a call in a few days (and believe me I was watching my phone like a hawk) and after 5 weeks (today) I drove to the police station and I was told that the supervisor would call me when hes in. he called me a couple hours later to tell me that I could come and pick them up. I went in and the permits were dated all the way back to November 22nd when I received the first and only phone call where they told me to wait for another call. so even though I know I can get the date extended when they expire its a little annoying that I could have had the permits a month ago and they completely forgot to call me...

1. Application type (FID/permit w/ existing FID). - FID change of address & 3 pistol permits
2. Police Department where you applied. - Jackson Township
3. Name of the person you dealt with at the PD. - I don't recall anyone saying their name, but shame on me for not asking.
4. Time taken to issue FID and/or permit. - Just shy of 90 days.
5. Documents required by the PD (aside from the standard application and the mental health release form). - Just the standard forms, but they only allow you to apply for 3 pistol permits.
6. Notes - anything pertaining to the application process (unforeseen difficulties, chief of police calling your home, you hiring an attorney, etc.). - At around the 85 day mark, I got very frustrated after calling the records department to ask for an update. The lady on the phone was really not nice to deal with, and didn't tell me anything useful. I sent a very respectful letter via email to the Chief which requested a status update and offered to assist him and his staff with any outstanding items. I did not in any way accuse him or his department of any wrongdoing (30 day "law"). I figured that if I'm going to tell my Chief of Police that his department is doing something wrong, I should do that via legal council. He (or someone who checks his email) responded to my email within an hour, and let me know that he would have someone look into my application. I had my FID & permits the next business day.

-The detective that I dealt with was very helpful. I had a old warrant I didn't even know I had from a very old traffic ticket. This warrant didn't even come up during my application process to join the Fire Department. He caught it and let me know about it, told me how to take care of it and and took care of me. Something other departments or officers won't ever do. That warrant could of been the reason it took that long

Also did not pay for anything(except finger printing). Maybe courtesy for being in the FD but I don't know.

UPDATE: 3  P2P- 2 1/2 months from but where given to me almost a month after they where printed or issued. Excuse was the Capt. hadn't sign them.

Anyone with experience from Hillsborough?

From my personal experince, Hillsborough is good. However, its also been about 5 years since I have applied for a P2P. I recently spoke to one of my friends in HIllsbourgh who recently applied for an FID and told me its around 30 days. 6 years ago my initial FID took 6 weeks. My wife's  initial took 7 weeks. A week and a half ago I applied for more P2P. My reference recieved their letters in about 4 days. So hopefully my friend is correct about the 30 days.

You mentioned the delay in you case was “permits typed in Trenton” unless something drastically changed...the issuing agency typed them out when I lived there ....I was present most times as they typed them in front of me.

Applied for 3 more P2P on  1/10/2019 in Princeton.  My references received their letters on 1/17/19.  I received my initial FID and original 3 P2P's in September 2018.  Not bad turnaround for the Socialist Republic of Princeton.

8-9 months is criminal

When the issuing agency is the NJSP, all the typing is done in Trenton. Not the local barracks.
