NJ FID application data collection effort

Recommended Posts

Still waiting, but here are the details:

1. Application type: initial FID + P2P

2. Police Department where you applied: Livingston PD

3. Name of the person you dealt with at the PD: online

4. Time taken to issue FID and/or permit: still waiting

  • June 30 - initial online application filled, fingerprinting scheduled
  • References completed within 24 hours
  • July 2 - email from Livingston PD confirming receipt of FARS application submission
  • July 17 - fingerprints done
  • July 22 - criminal history check completed

5. Documents required by the PD (aside from the standard application and the mental health release form): none yet

So, almost 2 months since last update on criminal history check being done. Is there any way to check the status at the NJ state level? Livingston PD doesn't have any updates.

A couple of posts up above around the time that I applied and also FID+P2P got theirs already. Any suggestions on what I should do next?

There is no way to check the status on the state level as the application is in the hands of the local PD.  Just call up the PD and politely ask what the status is.  If everything is in order they will be able to give you an approximate timeline of app approval and FID issuance.

Ah, I guess I didn't understand the process well enough. I thought the FARS system was at state level and once approved there, it went to local PD for final processing.

After the completion of the criminal check, the next step is your local PD reviewing all the parts of the app and if approved, marking it so on FARS.  When that happens you will get an additional email noting the approval.  After that is done, there is a further waiting game for them to print up your cards and call you to come pick them up.  Hope this helps.

lol I agree but honestly I have no interest in buying more than one right now. Planning on moving to America soon anyway.

You never know, when I was in NJ I used to get 5 at a time, every time, for 5 years.  When I moved to NH the 3 I had left made great targets at the range...

Just signed up to post this (also posted to /r/NJGuns on reddit).

I'm in Sussex County; Hopatcong Borough.

  • Started application: August 2
  • References submitted: August 3
  • First contact from PD: August 3 (asked for photo of DL / Passport)
  • Fingerprint appointment #1: August 22 (I was on vacation the week prior and couldn't make an appointment any sooner).
  • Fingerprint appointment #2: Sept 8 (something came up on Aug 22 and I couldn't make it).
  • Background Check Completed: Sept 11
  • Permit Application Approved: Oct 7
  • Call from PD to pick up FID: Oct 26
  • Picked up FID/permit: Oct 28 (was told not to show up before this day)

Keep in mind that three weeks of that period were caused by me 1) being on vacation and unavailable to schedule a fingerprint session, 2) something outside my control causing me to miss my appointment and have to reschedule (which cost another 2 weeks).

So not bad at all, based on what I've been reading.

Other notes: the records clerk at the PD was super friendly. I was expecting an icy reception, but she and whoever the other guy there was were both all jokey and nice. Also, there was a line of dudes waiting to pickup either FID or purchase permits behind me. The window for pickup is between 5pm and 7pm; I got there at 5:05 and was the third person to pick up. Place was busy as hell.

Anyone has a contact name/email/phone at the State Police Hamilton Troop C Substation for FID/Permits follow ups?

Our town has no local police department and we rely on the NJSP. So, my application goes through them. In my case:

Submitted Application: 7/28/20

Fingerprinted: 8/12/20

Application Accepted: 9/7/20

Still waiting for the call to pickup permits as of 11/5/20... (two months after acceptance email)

Did you get a notification that your background check was complete?  The state police barracks that I use takes 3 1/2 to 4 months to process assuming your fingerprints are already on file.

Still waiting, but here are the details:

1. Application type: initial FID + 2 P2P

2. Police Department where you applied: Edison PD

3. Name of the person you dealt with at the PD: online

4. Time taken to issue FID and/or permit: still waiting

  • Oct 25th - initial online application filled, fingerprinting scheduled
  • Oct 26th - Finger printing completed
  • Oct 30th - Criminal history check completed
  • Oct 31st - Both References completed
  • Nov 5th - Completed and submitted NY mental health record release form through email

5. Documents required by the PD (aside from the standard application and the mental health release form): none yet

Couple of questions:

A.  Anyone recently applied in Edison and what was the turnaround time? Thanks!!

B. Given the shortage of handguns, will any of the dealers allow me to place an order and pay for the guns wand pick up when the P2Ps are ready.  It could be months and don’t know if dealer will hold.  Any advice on this?

Nov. 4th Applied via FARS

Nov. 4th both references returned emails

Nov. 14th Criminal History Completed

**will update when I have to pay for my permits**

My town Fairlawn has a backup from June.

Applied Oct 12th

Oct 12th references complete

Oct 15th fingerprints complete

Oct 18th state background complete

Waiting on local pd.

But with a 390 application backlog from June very doubtful I will receive any notice this year!

Well i was informed today by local pd. That i wont' see the permit until Feb 2021 they are way behind . So that would make it over 4 months!!!

I put in for 3 yesterday, both references came back last night. So, now I'll see how long things are running in my town. I was the first one to test the FARS system in town last year when they first implemented it, and it took them a while to figure out the software.

A. No clue with Edison, I think all the municipalities are way behind.

B. I was able to purchase locally online, dealer is holding it until my permit clears... the gun shops are out of stock on a lot of item, items that are in stock with their distributors take two weeks to come in, so if you see what you want, pounce on it.

1. Application type (FID/permit w/ existing FID). FID AND 1 PERMIT

2. Police Department where you applied. Chester

3. Name of the person you dealt with at the PD. Online application

4. Time taken to issue FID and/or permit. 30 days!

5. Documents required by the PD (aside from the standard application and the mental health release form). Driver's License

6. Notes - Chester was fast. I took a while to get fingerprinted due to life but they basically turned around my FID and P2P in about a day once my background check came back (which took roughly 29 days). I recently moved to Chester so my DL is not updated to my new address but that was a non issue. Really no drama with the process.
