Wolfy 51 Posted February 10, 2010 http://www.app.com/article/20100210/NEW ... n-explodes Of course the writer calls it a township range. And of course the article says the owner loaded the gun before it exploded cause an unloaded gun can explode.
Maksim 1,504 Posted February 10, 2010 anyone know him? Sounds like a double charge? article mentioned his buddy reloaded the gun... assuming that may be reloaded ammo.
223lover 9 Posted February 10, 2010 The better article would have been the one on the right "beer could be good for your bones"

DirtyDigz 1,811 Posted February 11, 2010 How is this possible, it wasn't a Glock.
tt-33 8 Posted February 11, 2010 I think the key word was inadvertantly discharged reload or not theres more to this wolfy isnt the range taped
Maksim 1,504 Posted February 11, 2010 time to ask dan.... he should know.
Lunicy 4 Posted February 11, 2010 the indoor range has cameras. .44 mag I'm guessing reloads. A double charged .44mag can make a mess out of a gun, and a face, and a hand etc.... My prayers are with Thomas, but I hope this doesn't cause a problem with the range.
matty 810 Posted February 11, 2010 Hm, I wonder what the cameras will show. I am certain its captured and probably turned over to the cops/lawyers by now.I just hope they don't decide to require an RO there at all times, I like being able to go there late nite. Whatever it is, I hope he's alright. I am sure there wil be something in the newsletter or email about it, once the dust settles.
rscalzo 3 Posted February 11, 2010 assuming that may be reloaded ammo. That would be my first thought. Even a bullet lodged in the barrel doesn't necessarily cause a handgun to explode. In fact, it probably would budge the barrel and not much more. We have a barrel we use as a visual aid in our Basic Pistol classes showing that type of event. The article seems a bit confusing and seems to be written by someone with limited knowledge on the subject. At least they provided a detailed model number which seemed odd. Possibly a double charge but there are those who feel that extremely light loads can cause high pressure. Using the preferred slow handgun powder, a double charge is unlikely. A fast burning powder in a large case such as the 44 Mag. could allow a double charge but not the best of powders to use.
tony357 386 Posted February 11, 2010 I am thinking their was a squib load, Given the shooters age the squib was not heard and was treated as a missfire and was overlooked.
rscalzo 3 Posted February 11, 2010 A squib would bulge the barrel before it would destroy the cylinder although the article isn't specific about the actual damage. A while back a test was done on a popular firearm's TV show using a S&W 686 and firing more then one round into a blocked barrel. I was amazed at how little damage was actually done. But more information is needed before an explanation is possible.
tony357 386 Posted February 11, 2010 I read an article where a squib round exploded the cylinder and cracked the upper strap on a smith revolver. http://lonelymachines.org/2009/07/04/squib-loads/
