.338 caliber bolt actions.

Recommended Posts

So inspired by Shane's gun porn and this video.... I am absolutely looking at 338 lapua as the next bolt action. now the question is.... was just looking at the reloading manual, and it lists

338 Remington Ultra Mag, 338 Winchester Mag, 338 Lapua.....

wtf is the practical difference between them all?

Its funny, but my Lee reloading manual does not even list 338 lapua... only remington and winchester.

Before you embark make sure you are aware of how expensive that round is.

A case goes for $1000.

Even with reloading I would make sure to check into it!

Just did the reloading calc... about $.60 a round, not including brass. For better loads, about $80 a round.

cost of the bullets ranges big time.

Maks:

I went down this road and then sanity set in. The brass alone is appx $2 a piece. Loaded ammo about $5 a round. Oh, did I mention that your press probably does not have a large enough opening for you to be able to reload .338 LM? Also, living here on the East Coast, not many places where you could really wring it out, distance-wise. The weapons themselves aren't exactly bargain basement either. One of the least expensive is the Armalite AR-30 at appx $1600, and then there is decent glass to think about - add another $700 minimum. Looks neat, sounds neat - in reality....eh, not so much.

I was so badly infected with the .338 LM bug that I managed to infect my buddy in Wyoming, but he has both the land (8K acres) and the money to take full advantage of the Lapua's fun quotient. Here's what he bought...

Don't let me dissuade you, but I'd think about it long and hard. If you buy it and then decide it's pretty much useless, people aren't going to be beating a path to your door to buy it from you. You'll bleed alot getting rid of it. JMHO / YMMV

In all honsty I swore off the 338LM after owning 2 already. If I did not get access to a 1300yd private range I doubt I would have bought another. However if you do really want one and dont mind a drive when you want to shoot it you can join Mifflin County PA Range. Very cheap and out to 1k.

Now here is the newest info. I figured this would happen. The 338LM has gained enough legs that significantly lower priced 338LM ammo is on the near horizon. Im talking sub $50 a box compared to $120 currently. This changes the game a bit. Also as you already noted reloading makes a big diff. Now compared to other 338's one of the key differences is in the brass. Access to Lapua brass is what drives most to the 338LM.

And again here is the key with the SRS. Dont want to shoot 338 today? OK 60 Seconds later you can shoot .243 with a barrel, bolt and mag swap.

Good advise.

It's up there with the .50BMG as a usless NJ rifle.

Well you would have the king of all safe queens unless you plan to travel with it like Shane.

wait... a box of regular 338 is typically over $120???? DAMN.

I just did the prices on components.

Honestly, I can think of worse ways to spend the money. I would be reloading this though.

Humn... is there a 338 lapua upper for an ar? wait... no, bolt action it is.

But come on, as fun as it is to shoot at 300 yards at CJ, 200 at dix.... I cant wait to shoot 600 or reach out to 1 kilometer. =)

And did just confirm, my press, the classic turret will reload 338 of all flavors, RUM and Lapua. only one it cant do is the 50.

this is getting tempting.

I am guessing I just may.... after I find one to shoot before hand.

Ok... done.... if I hit my business goals for the middle of the year, I am getting a 338 lapua.

I was on the waiting list for 2 years to Cumberland, Joined up and every time we went to shoot 600 there would be someone there shooting 100-200 yards and since it was a non common firing line you were screwed, had to wait for them to leave.

Quit there and joined Bridgeville in DE, but that is a 3 hr drive, But at least when you get there you can shoot, they should be finished with their 1K range by now. and have a separate 600 yard range

So how does that work? you have to move the ports back or start from a different place?

Cumberland

Yes the target and berm are in one place... And then you move back as far as you want and shoot them.

It is a big open Field with some marks on the ground to give you a distance reference. So if some one is in the Field at 200 you can not go behind them any farther to shoot so you are stuck at their distance, Retarded :x

Every time we would get the 600 yard line someone would show up and say we were taking up the whole range and nobody could shoot.

I would say yeah and when you camp out at the 100-150 line whats the difference now they were holding the rest up.

Make the firing line fixed and allow people to move their targets back and forth like CJ or Dix.. Ass backward

Never join a non common firing line club

If I can get back down to Bridgeville range soon I will take some pics.

Separate 600 yard range and they have been finishing up a 1000 yard range.

About 3 1/2 hrs from me in the Toms River area.

They have a butts system where you raise and lower the target and mark it like in the military,, They would not allow me to use my reactive MGM steel targets because of Splatter

I tried explaining to them splatter only goes a few yards.

And I need my spotter on station calling Trace not under ground at the target line. If you had 3-4 people and rotated it would be great
