Kagan's nomination is like Bush's nominatiom of Harriet Miers. Both have no track record and little experience. However, little experience is just about everyone in the current adminstration including Obama. I would not expect an Obama nomination to be anything but a radical socailist.

This may have a lot to do with the precipitous drop in his popularity with Jewish voters, traditionally a relatively solid Democratic bloc. Perhaps he believes that throwing them this bone will make up for his having his nose up Haji's behind.
