Barrett M107/M82A1

Recommended Posts

I think you have already noted the major drawback: "Where do I shoot it?" Many ranges disallow them, and even those that do allow them are usually short, considering the .50 BMG's capabilities. Even the 1000 yard Benchrest Club in PA disallows .50 BMG's. There are people on this board that have them, and I'm sure they'll chime in, but, living where we live, it's awfully hard to make a case for laying out that kind of money for something with little or no use.

I have a friend that has both a Barret M82A1 and a Desert Tactical .338 LM. For him these make emminent sense - he has an 8000 acre ranch in Wyoming. We can always drool...

The rather plain looking rifle is a Remington 700 in .308.

What!?   and

I have a friend in MN and she has a 80 acre place and I thought that was quite huge! Well, anything like that is huge in NJ ...

I got a buddy with the same type of setup in MT. Right before hunting season, he'll zero in his rifle from his back porch

But regarding the OP; whatever floats your boat! I think having something for its novelty is a good enough reason-- even if its $11K (as long as it isn't my money I suppose ;) ). Range 14 at Dix allows 50's, last I heard. As long as you give them a head's up, they'll put you in a certain lane on the range.

you realize its like $10,000 and bullets are around 5 dollars each correct?

absolutely.

dont forget to add some training costs for all that.

Once my FID comes in, i gotta find someone to teach me to shoot.

You either must have won the lottery / loaded with cash / plain silly!

If you are new to guns, what's the point of starting with a 50 BMG!?

Lol... why not start with .50BMG? If he's got the dough who cares. Shooting pretty much any place around here will be a problem unless you get on private land that's pretty substantial with a serious backstop or wooded lot. Ya know the kind of property that doesn't have a road, shopping center, development, etc 1/2 mile behind some trees or over some birm. Last thing you want is a friggin .50BMG flyin on ya :shifty:

I think most average Joe's are pretty satisfied with ~.30cal. The guns are plentiful, ammo is cheap enough and plentiful, you can shoot them all over, and its somewhat less intimidating than a .50BMG.

Ya know... it is a HUGE effin bullet  .50 BMG, .338 Lapua, .308, 5.56 NATO

ft dix allows 50bmg with inspection....

but yeah.... unless your wallets are endless, and you are ok with a gun that you have to make an appointment to shoot.... at one place in NJ..... it is a little overkill.

Get a high end 308 and a bunch of ammo and practice.

I rented one when I was out west once. It is an awesome piece of hardware. I wouldn't mind owning the Barret 416 myself (416 is a necked down 50 with higher speed and better balistics then the 50). But for me it's cost prohitive. The posts above hit the major issues, most ranges don't allow them - usually because of the nose and the destruction they cause to berms. Ammo is pricey. And in South Jersey there is only club with a 600 yard range and that's the longest. The 50 or 416 has effectively eliminated enimies at 1.5 MILES! It seems silly to me to use tha at a measely 600 yards. But, it is an awesome gun.

Also: with people tring to ban the 50 , the 416 is a safe alternitive. the 416 was designed after CA's 50 ban.

This may give you an idea...

To the OP - If you got the bucks to consider a Barrett, I'd go with something just as neat (neater maybe) that is more practical. Something like this...

http://www.sigsauer.com/Products/ShowCa ... ductid=246

Interchangeable calibers, left to right interchangeable bolt, straight pull bolt - they don't come much neater than this - and you'll get change back from your $10K

If you have more money than shooting experience, why the heck would you get such a niche rifle?

Assuming you have 10 grand to blow on guns, why don't you get a .22 rifle to learn marksmanship with, a Remington 700 or Savage 99 in .308 to go shoot at distance, get a Mosin Nagant for the hell of it, an AR or something if you want a "military style" gun. Keep in mind with 10 grand you can buy well over a dozen nice rifles that you can use many places, rather than 1 rifle that you need an appointment to shoot.

Also I'd like to be the asshole to point out that just because your rifle is capable of hitting a target at 1,000 yards doesn't mean you can. If you've never shot a rifle chances are you can barely hit shit at 50 yards. Do you even know how to adjust/zero a scope?

    • In 50 years of living in NJ I've never experienced any attempt to inspect the interior of the home, and only one definite inspection of the exterior for an announced reassessment of all properties and that was a drive by. About 9 years of that was living in an apartment, but still, uncommon. Every place I lived had either a finished attic, basement, or both. But they were also included in the habitable square footage on the taxes when we got there.
    • 27.00 and change in tolls to drive down the shore from Rutherford,  47.00 in tolls to go out to Long island to visit dying relatives. Now I read they are going to raise the fees in the DMV. Murphy lied just to get elected when he said that seniors will get a significant tax break with his StayNJ" program to stop us from leaving.   Keep voting for democrats...this is what you get.  Tax and spend is all they know.  Never cut anything.  This state sucks.
