Lessons learned from the CMP

Recommended Posts

Well, I figured I would write this down while things are still fresh in my head. I am wanting to go back in the spring and figured I would not only write this up for myself, but anybody else planning a trip out to Ohio.

1) Check the stores schedule online before you plan the trip. They are closed on some random days for inventory and such. We actually had the trip scheduled for an earlier day, but found out online that the store was closed for inventory.

2) Start a pre-paid Visa Gift card a couple of months prior to making the trip. Start adding money like a savings account and LEAVE YOUR REAL CREDIT CARDS AT HOME! This way if you only bring the Visa gift card, you will only spend what is on it. I brought my entire wallet, and my bank account is hating me for it.

3) Leave later at night. We left my place at 5:30pm, and got to the store around 1:30am. Leave around 11:00ish from my place, and drive right to the store so we can arrive right when they are opening. This way you don't need to get a hotel room before you shop.

4) Get your hotel room after shopping and sleep through the day. It is a long drive to do all at once.

5) When you walk in the store, first thing give the guy at the counter your drivers license. He will give you a muzzle wear gauge so you can accurately pick your rifle. Some rifles have tags with the muzzle wear written on them, but what they wrote on them was way wrong.

6) Do a first general look cruise of the store before getting into the in-depth examination. This way you can absorb the awesomeness and not be so overwhelmed when you start your real shopping.

7) Don't be afraid to ask a question. The guys at the counter are extremely helpful, and really are happy to help. Some other customers are obvious that they know what they are doing, and most are more than willing to help out a new collector. I had a random guy shopping that was an expert look over my M1D, he was thrilled to help and really was an awesome guy.

8) Buy ammo!

9) Buy ammo!

10)Buy ammo!!!!!

I am sure that I forgot some things, but hopefully this helps out someone else considering a trip.

I've purchased three by mail from CMP and have been impressed with each one. I would need to wear a Depends undergarment if I physically went there. I don't gamble, but I am sure I would blow all of our family assets if I ever went there. ...Just one more, I can stop any time I want, oh, look at this one-I gotta have it, repeat often until closing or escorted out of the premise.

Hi, my name is Wojo and I am a Garand-aholic.

i'm heading out there in january. that is of course once they are open again, saw they are closed til the 4th.

Also, i have to disagree with your #4. 8hrs drive isn't that bad, no hotel needed. I've driven to florida before, 17 straight hrs, so 8 will be a walk in the park. lol

It's not the 8 hours out that kills you. It's the 8 hours back home after spending 4 hours in the store which starts to get to you. But then again some people can drive hours upon hours with no problems, I for one am not. I will also say the traffic is heavier in the afternoon as opposed to the middle of the night.

20hrs round trip isn't too bad. driving long distances i'm good with, my only concern is that since it will be winter, is if there is a snowstorm. my truck will be fine, its just everyone else that can't drive in the snow, which would turn a 20hr trip into a 2 day trip. lol

It is a store, you can just go there, however you need to have a qualification to buy from them. Either belong to the garand organization, or easier way... go have fun and shoot a CMP Vintage/Garand match at Central Jersey. After the match, you get a certificate that entitles you to buy from the CMP.

Is there any prerequisite to shooting the CMP match itself other than bringing eligible guns and paying an entrance fee?

Why do you suggest buying a lot of ammo? Is it that good a deal? That hard to get. BTW, can you buy more than one rifle at a time?

yes, M2 ball ammo in the 400 rd can from CMP is less than .50/rd shipped. You should not use comm .30-06 w/out an adjustable gas plug in the M1. You can buy up to 12 rifles a year, as of now, IIRC

Will prices go down once we get the Garands from south Korea?

there will be no garands from korea.

Expect prices of M1 garands to go skyrocketing in the next 3-4 years.

Orest who is the cheif operating officer of the CMP says at current sales volume they have enough M1's to last them another 3 years, 4 max. Once they are gone they are done selling surplus rifles, or so they say.........

There is a possibility of an open seat or two on the next trip which is next Friday night. We are leaving my place around 10pm and getting to the store on Saturday morning. All you need to do is help with gas. PM me if anyone is interested.
